Crowley: No TID For Me

Cincinnati City Council member David Crowley wrote to Mayor Mark Mallory Tuesday, saying he would like his name removed from consideration for appointment to the Hamilton County Transportation Improvement District (TID).

Crowley was Mallory's choice to represent the city on the TID, which considers road improvement projects and other transportation issues throughout the county. But some members of Cincinnati city council -- specifically members of the so-called "Fiscal Five" who opposed Crowley and three other members of council over several budget issues in December -- have tried to block that appointment in recent weeks.

The "fiscal five," a nickname that Enquirer columnist Peter Bronson slapped on Jeff Berding, Chris Bortz, Leslie Ghiz, Chris Monzel and Laketa Cole becasue of their desire to cut social services and the Health Department, waged a prolonged battle with four members of council over the 2007-08 budget.

It appears those disagreements have spilled over on new issues in the new year.

Crowley's group, which included John Cranley, Cecil Thomas and Jim Tarbell, negotiated an increase in social service spending if additional year-end revenue comes in as expected. The group also fought for, and won, a less-severe cut to the Health Department.

Crowley raised the white flag on the TID issue Tuesday, saying he's more interested in restoring a functional working relationsihp with council than serving on the board. Here's his memo:

Mayor Mallory,

I very much appreciate your invitation to serve as the City's representative to the Transportation Improvement District (TID). Due to no fault of my own this decision has led to much distracting debate and controversy over the last few weeks. After further reflection I am writing to ask that my name be removed from consideration for this appointment.

My keen interest in the transportation issues under the jurisdiction of the TID are outweighed by my desire to foster a civil and productive atmosphere among City Council. In my mind this is far more important than engaging in battles over whom you as the Mayor wish to appoint to a given board or commission. In the end it should be your decision as the mayor and in the future I will continue to support you in this regard.

It is my hope that this action will enable us, the City Leaders, to focus our collective energies on the many other critical issues facing our City such as the needless violence on our streets and the lack of economic opportunity for certain segments of our community. I look forward to continuing this very important work together with you and the rest of Council.

David

This just shows Crowley's maturity and the immaturity of Berding's attempt to increase his ego and be the "leader of the pack."

Unfortunately, Berding has proven to be nothing but an egotistical, self-serving Republican whose only interest are advancing his own career.....which is what most of us thought of him before he was elected.

Fortunately, his chances of getting endorsed by the Democratic party this year are slim...and most people have already seen his true colors...so he'll probably be a one-term only council member, no matter how much he can raise from all of his anti-portune Republican friends.

I saw, GO Crowley....keep serving the City...we need more like you!

Berding a Republican? Nope.

Furthermore, we don't want him. One Leslie Ghiz is plenty enough.

Crowley's constituent contact is not just rolled out during election years, it is all year long. He stays committed and responsive to folks across wider ranges of the city than any other elected official. His genuineness, even when he is still investigating a matter and it gets a bit slow going, is a hallmark of a dedicated decency beyond the usual candidates' manufacturing process.
Bravo, Mr. Crowley!! Bravo!!

Anonymous 7:05PM...........Berding will be endorsed. Within the matters of the local HCDP Burke always gets his way. Burke makes sure that ALL incumbents that wore the HCDP colors and, in Berding's case enough upfront money to choke a horse even before the race was being run in 2005, get a pass. That means they do not get any questions asked of them or their performance by the group composing the Cincinnati Democratic Committee who will interview candidates then offer a recommendation to the larger body of Democrats. Burke makes intimidatingly specious statements for these matters such being that 'we've done it this way for' however many years he chooses to cite which would lead one to believe that once a winning Democrat, always a winning Democrat.

This is the local curse of a national and state party that says it wants transparency of its candidates as well as accountability; that jumps on another party for PAY TO PLAY, but locally remains silent and sullen when it uses the same clandestine rules. The men chairing the CDC would have to have remarkable political acumen to buck Burke and his cohorts in these processes. It could be done, though.

If you have not run the gauntlet of vetting/recommendation/endorsement groups before, they are the baseline for a person interested to be considered an ENDORSED CANDIDATE by a party or group. The regular citizen that does not participate in party politics may remain oblivious to these terrains within party politics from whence spring who and what the voters see on their ballot. The education of the common citizen is many times skewed away from the real knowledge of party process by the media twists, spins, omissions, the hidden agendas of individuals in a party, or the rock star buffer so many politicians cloak around them.

Have to agree with prior post (VAE?) that Berding will get the nod due to his bucks. It would be great if the endorsing committee does not give a free ride to incumbents, as has been done in the past. Sadly, the problem is finding 9 qualified candidates, so the incumbents get waved through.

So, will these pathetic whiners also target Cranley, Tarbell & Thomas, or are they reserving their slimy tactics to attack Crowley? What happened to Cole being cozy with Crowley? They did radios spots together etc in the '05 campaign. She is a disgrace to her race and her gender, especially to go after social services that often serve the AA community. Can't wait until the "Cole Train' derails. The same media maven worked on Cole's and Berding's campaigns. Bonnie, take a tip- don't make the public view a billboard of weasel face Berding again unless you post a warning sign saying Caution, arrogant creepy guy with bad teeth straight ahead". And how about giving Laketa a course in Grammar 101- to hear her butcher the English languge is to wince. Of course since Bonnie's son is Cole's aide she's not likely to piss of her boy's boss. While you're at it, tell Laketa she doesn't carry off corn rows- she ain't CJ Prentiss...
