Chabot worth more than Cranley

Personal financial disclosure reports that show how much money each member of Congress earns – or is worth – are being released today.

As usual, Rep. Steve Chabot’s report covering 2005 contains no surprises:

The six-term Republican from Westwood earned no income other than his $162,100 congressional salary, gave no speeches, had no debts, held no positions and went on just one trip – a weekend jaunt to nearby Baltimore with the conservative Heritage Foundation.

About the only thing worth noting about his 10-page handwritten report is that Chabot, 53, owns stock in Applebee’s, Cincinnati-based Cintas Corp., and The Sportsman’s Guide, an online site that offers deals for hunting and camping equipment.

Altogether, Chabot has a modest portfolio of bank accounts, bank CD’s, retirement accounts and stock that is worth between $385,000 and $1.2 million. These assets earned him between $9,000 and $30,000 last year.

Chabot’s Democratic challenger in this year's election for the 1st Congressional District, on the other hand, is worth much less.

In a four-page handwritten report filed with the House Clerk last month, John Cranley, 32, indicated that his salary for last year was nearly $91,000 – which is $71,000 less than members of Congress make each year.

Cranley earned about $55,000 for serving on the Cincinnati City Council and $36,000 for being an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

His portfolio consists of stock in Ford Motor Co., a mutual fund, investment in a partnership and a retirement account that, combined, are worth between $17,000 and $81,000.

But Cranley, a lawyer, still owes between $50,000 and $100,000 in student loans.

We'll post details from other members of Congress here as they become available.

How does a lawyer a present city councilman and running for the USA Congress still OWN multiple student loans?

This must truly be a first to OWN a student loan?

This post is for the record books. Of course the headline has to be "Chabot worth more than Cranley". Is the next post going to be "Chabot values morals more than Cranley" too?

Couldn't it have been "Cranley's income more in line with the average Cincinnati resident"?

Why don't you guys report the real issues of this campaign, instead of muddling into dumb details that no one cares about.

How about Chabot's connections to the Delay/Ney mess, or Chabot's pledge not to campaign from his office or to not serve more than 6 terms?

Regarding the Anonymous post before me, Cranley went to Harvard for an M.A. and a law degree. Guess how much that costs. Many middle class students are probably paying that off for decades.

I think it really says something about Cranley's candidacy that the only attacks on him are senseless accusations about his role in this or that. Is he really that perfect? Or are you guys just lazy?

I caught that too, I think it should of been OWES, not OWNS.

You have to be careful with any one who stills owns Ford stock. Kinda have to question their decision making.

Let's see- Chabot is 21 years older than Cranley, and that much closer to retirement. Do either or both have a mortgage (and if so, how large) or own other real property? Does Chabot have responsibilities upcoming on children's education - college or otherwise? Do we really need to know this, or would it be more important to know in what direction they believe the nation and OH 01 should be going? Do they believe in a balance of power in government? How do they feel about budget deficits and the national debt and the burden such will create for their children and future generations?

Cranley sure is doing well for a guy who has never had a real job.

Cranley isn't middle class...where did you get that? He does not come from a middle class family.

What were Chabot & Cranley "worth" before they made money off elections? Chabot's been feeding off taxpayers for what -- over 25 years? Cranley 5?

Looks like Chabot has made enough money off taxpayers to retire with no regrets.

"no vested interest here" makes a good point about other values/investments not included in this report like home mortgages and other assets.

Clearly, Chabot has become a millionaire in the last twenty years (not "25"). Good for him.

Funny though, since Chabot spouts off about saving you "your hard earned money" while he has been taking it for himself to get rich since 1987 (City Council, County Commission, Congress).

Just read that Congress voted to accept a $3300 COLA pay raise, by voting down a motion to not accept it. How did Chabot vote? Hint: only a very few voted to not accept the pay raise.

Anon 736 is right. Cranley's major source of income since leaving school has been the taxpayers. What else has he ever done? John comes from a wealthy family (see the thousands they have given his campaign), Chabot had to work himself through school and life. Chabot was a teacher and had a real law practice.

no wonder the enquirer hides this stuff in a blog for "political junkies only" - there's no way even the dimmest bulb in the general readership could miss the blatant bias. This is just ridiculous. It's offensive.

I heard a rumor that when Democrats take over the County - the Enquirer will never again get a quote, an interview, etc., ad sales will plummet (due to a loss in the ability to get government contracts) and the majority of staff reporters will be willing to go on strike ( due to frustration with the inability to do their job and being laughing stocks in their field with deadend jobs with no chance for real journalistic careers) until the shareholders fire the editorial staff and replace it with a balanced panel of professionals beholden to noone except their professional ethics.
Then Cincinnati will no longer be in the dark when it comes to the news - in the meantime, read the Cincinnati Business Journal and surf the net North to real newspapers.
Shame!

You get that from his income, which we all now know. What does his family have to do with it ? That's a sorry and crass attempt at spin.

Not a middle class student.

If the democrats take over the county, the Enquirer will lose business because of increased white flight. The left behinds will hardly be the type likely to be capable of reading a newspaper.

HOW MANY STOCKS DID CHABOT HAVE IN 1994 WHEN HE WENT TO WASHINGTON?

at 10:20 PM, September 05, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah Chabotheads! Bring it on! Your boy is worth $385,000 -- $1,200,000 in stocks alone!!!! F'in RICH, RICH, RICH!!!! And that boy's kind of dumb!!!! Killer. $600,000? $900,000? $1,200,000? Which is it?? That guy rocks the money -- ALWAYS taking it!! Chabot SUCKS.

If you watch the news, Chabot hasn't been in it much until Cranley challenged him. That is because Chabot has been hiding.

Wow, look how immature the Cranley Crew is... I definitely support Chabot. So what if he has a considerable amount of money, does that make him a bad person? He's not thieving us. As we all know, Chabot is older in age and has been successful with stocks and his job. Cincinnati would go down-hill if Cranley won.
"If the democrats take over the county, the Enquirer will lose business because of increased white flight. The left behinds will hardly be the type likely to be capable of reading a newspaper."
I agree with this person.
