Snow draws ire at first White House briefing
Cincinnati native Tony Snow thought he’d kick off his new gig as White House press secretary with a laid-back, “collegial” exchange with the demanding White House press corps, which had gotten into on-air squabbles with his predecessor, Scott McClellan.
So for Snow’s first on-the-record briefing, the former FOX News commentator invited reporters to his personal office Friday, instead of addressing them from the podium in the regular White House briefing room.
The result? About 80 reporters crammed into his small West Wing office, some complaining that they couldn’t hear him and others demanding to know if this was to be the format for all future briefings.
“I thought it was a little more informal. I didn’t realize it’d be so highly attended,” a surprised Snow told the crowd, apologizing also for starting the meeting at 9:20 a.m. when it had originally been scheduled for 9 a.m., then moved to 9:30 a.m.
“Do not do that again,” one reporter grumbled.
“This isn’t good,” another said.
“I had this wonderful idea that this would be nice and collegial and relaxed, but it obviously, at this point, is just a mess,” Snow said, looking flustered.
Snow said he’d hold another briefing with reporters Monday - in the regular briefing room, which is much larger and has auditorium-style seating. His first on-camera briefing is set for Tuesday.

President Bush today announced the creation of a new national database to register every gun owner in America in order to better fight the Global War on Terror. Soon every gun in America will be registered by its serial number with the Department of Homeland Security.
According to Michael Chertoff the inconveince to gun owners will be minimized as the government will enter all homes while the owners are away, search for a gun, and register any that they find. "The homeowners won't even know we were there," says Chertoff, "In addition, Smith & Wesson, Colt, and Winchester have already agreed and supplied us with the serial numbers of all guns sold since 9/11."
President Bush, after receiving some criticism after announcing earlier this year that only guns sold by Americans to persons in other countries would be tracked, decided that the only fair thing to do was to expand the program to all Americans. "I'm the decider see, and I decided that what's good for the goose is nice for the flock. If we are tracking foriegns the only senselessable thing to do is apply the same standard to people here. Because we all want to be treated the same by our government as it treats others in the world" said Bush.
The National Rifle Association announced that it would file suit to stop the registration of guns in America. "We at the NRA believe that the 2nd amendment specifically protects Americans from such measures" said the NRA president. Vice-President Cheney dismissed the NRA as having a pre-9/11 mind-set. Cheney said at an invitation-only public forum today that not giving the government this information would be unpatriotic and that a few crazy gun-loving elites from the Midwest are preventing the government from stopping a known plot to massacre innocent civilians. "We cannot wait for the smoking gun to be just that, a smoking gun" said Cheney. For more on Cheney's reaction see page A12 "Cheney's double barreled argument hits critics head on."
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said that Congress fully supports the President's proposal. "We in Congress stand behind our President on the gun issue and will do our part to make sure that the laws we pass in the future will be fully consistent with whatever President Bush does now." Democrats in Congress reacted to the surprise announcement with muted anger. House Minority Leader Pelosi said, "Like our President, we want to win the war on terror. I will be interested in hearing how President Bush will justify the current proposal in light of the second amendment. I look forward to having hearings."
White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said in response to complaints that the government was collecting to much information on the guns dismissed such complaints. "All we have are serial numbers. You would need a completely different database of information to connect those numbers to an actual person." When asked about the existence of such a database today Attorney General Gonzalez said, "I'm not going to rule it out, but we can't talk about our intelligence work."
Brilliant "Shoe on the other foot." That actually makes sense, since deadly weapons in the hands of terrorists probably poses a greater threat than a telephone call. Gun owners basically are terrorists. Terrorism is based on fear, and I know it scares me to think of gun owners in this country walking around with a 45 strapped to their belt with the safety off.
Why don't we give the state and federal governments ALL our personal information -- so they can crosscheck it against our Social Security numbers, real estate, voting records, tax returns, credit reports, phone bills, do-not-call lists, bank records, shopping habits, licenses etc. so they can track our every move. Feel like we're Back in the U.S.S.R.!
How about concentrating on Osama bin Laden first?????????
Liberals are crying about the Bush administration? That's news to me!
TB gives liberals a bad name. Gun owners aren't terrorists moron. Most are law abiding citizens and you're just a paraniod little twit. You're an embarrasment to the Democratic party!

You can't expect (R)wrong wing nuts to realize when your poking fun at them !
Hell, their party has been poking them for years and they enjoy it !
Just ask their muleman about the poking he's been getting !
Don't Ask' I won't tell the Truth about Anything !
But I'm
Not Ready to Make Nice !
Democrats who pander to gun nuts are the real embarrassment.
Merriam-Webster's defines terrorism as "the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion."
When a person points a gun at you and demands your wallet, aren't they coercing your money from you through terror?
When law-abiding citizens cannot walk the streets because of the availability of millions of guns bought legally or illegally flooding their neighborhoods, is that not terror?
Democrats used to be on the right side of this issue. We used to have Bill Clinton, and others with spines, who took on the gun nuts and banned assault weapons with the aim at further steps at disarming criminals around the country. Somewhere along the way we lost our will to a well-armed lobby, void of common sense.
It's time to rescind the 2nd Amendment. It does not give you the right to have a handgun, it gives the states the right to an armed militia. Any citizen soldiers out there, fine, keep your guns. Paul Hackett and other reservists, knock yourselves out. But Dick Cheney and other gutless wonders who insist on being armed, but turned down the Army the five times he was offered a rifle and a chance to serve; shut up.

Do us all a favor and make yourself fish bait !

For once, Emma Morrow is right. The worst thing on this blog is the willingness to let annoying people from out of state weigh in on what's billed as an Ohio political blog.

If the communistic (R)wrong wing nuts are willing to invade your privacy, they are certainly willing to invade your home !
The invasion to privacy is far worse than homicide !
Murder kills an individual, breach of privacy kills a nation !

"WEBMASTER - WHAT'S HAPPENED TO THE SUNDAY OPEN THREAD?"
I'll tell you what happened; Messrs Callinan & Co. won't allow free & open postings anymore because they are afraid of all the people posting remarks about their biased & sloppy coverage.
They think that if they bury their heads in the sand these issues will go away. They just don't get the New Media and the fact that their biased reporting (or NON-reporting) will be called out in numerous public forums.
They are dinosaurs on their way to extinction.
And to Emma Morrow; please shut up. Every time that you open your mouth you embarrass yourself.

There are many Americans who simply just don't want the gun violence to continue.
Democrats across the Queen City need to join together and insist on removing the threat of gun violence from our homes.
As a Latino Woman (native!), I would have no problem allowing the police to confiscate my husband's and children's guns, and I think a neighborhood roundup of guns is appropriate. If you don't let the police search your home, then they should be allowed by a judge to enter the house and search for weapons.
Our city's violence is out of control, and we women can't keep quiet as our children get shot by young black men.
