Portune blasts Heimlich over nondisclosure

Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune said Phil Heimlich should have told his fellow commissioners -- before they voted on a resolution approving the appointment of Robert Rhein to the Banks Working Group -- that Rhein gave $20,000 to Heimlich's re-election campaign.

Portune, at Wednesday's commission meeting, criticized Heimlich for "the politicization" of the appointments to the group that is expected to recommend how the proposed $600 million Banks development should be built.

Officially, Rhein, an Indian Hill real estate developer, was appointed to the five-man Banks Working Group by that group's chair, Reds owner Bob Castellini. But Hamilton County had the right to approve Castellini's selection.

Heimlich told the Enquirer last week -- after he specifically was asked -- that Rhein and his wife gave $10,000 each to Heimlich's re-election campaign.

The Enquirer's additional research showed that Rhein also gave more than $250,000 in the past few years to the national Republican Party.

"I think those are factors that should have been disclosed before we voted," Portune said.

Heimlich didn't respond to Portune's comments and continued to other meeting business.

Last week's vote to accept Rhein's appointment was unanimous.

Heimlich, an incumbent Republican, seeking re-election to the commission and is running against David Pepper, who, like Portune, is a Democrat.

That explains it. Why would a suburban homebuilder be on this working group? Looks like to serve as Heimlich's hack.

And why is Tom Gabelman allowed on it while still being paid for doing County work? Looks like a major conflict of interest.

Too bad Heimlich can only do what serves his interest, and not what's in the best interest of the County.

The citizens are no longer blinded !

They are tired of the culture of corruption and choking at the sight of Heimlich!

I don't know, but, that Drake deal smelled funny also ?

Heimlich opposed the tax levy, but, the citizens supported it !

So Heimlich back doors a sale against the voter ?

Then, the citizens support Portune by making him the highest vote getter on the commission and Phil brokers deals without the citizen's representative's input (Portune) ?

Seems Phil thinks he is smarter than the voter ?

The voter will educate Heimlich with his own pink slip collected at the ballot box !

So long Phil, did you learn that it is:

Government by the people for the people ?

It is not crony train robbery !

Used to be a Heimlich fan, but honestly, he has turned into a schmuck.....
His use of Commissioner position to merely launch a bid for statewide office was the last straw...
Don't know how I had it so wrong...

This is an example of a worthy Enquirer blog post - an item that perhaps didn't fit into another article and didn't necessarily merit a stand-alone story, but it's newsworthy.

Agreed !

It is about time the Enqueer starts reporting about the control freak hindlick !

I can't wait to see him choke on his own words !

Hell, his own brother doesn't even support him !

The Hindlick Family

If this is a news story then why didnt the Enquirer report on Cranley taking 27000K from the casino developers? Didn't he pass it through his finance committee and vote for it in council? Not to mention whatever he did in the smoke filled rooms. Where was his disclosure? Looks like youre just picking on Heimlich and Republicans. What gives?

The above website has links to these reports:

From Phil Heimlich: Illegally Disclosing Confidential Information?, 12-23-05

Around the time (Robert) Anglen’s stories appeared in the Enquirer, Kraft says that Phil was told by either the Ohio attorney general’s office or the state medical board that his brother had registered a complaint about (Dr.) Edward Patrick

O Brother, Where Art Thou? Letter to Phil Heimlich, 2-5-06

Does the Enquirer intend to cover this story?

Some wRong wing nut loose again !

Perhaps it is Lizzy you need to talk to. Get your facts straight !

I hear even mad brad is on the back peddle after this story, that truth website, and grandstanding tax collections !

It is about time the Enqueer does something more than rubberstamp a mad brad press release. Perhaps they are worried about that federal libel suit being prepared against them and every member of the wRong wing central committee ?

If you really want to know the scoop on gaming tell the truth:

Praise the lord, there is Gambling

I hope the Enquirer keeps digging on these contracts and conflicts. Regarding casinos, those guys grease EVERYBODY, not just Cranley. There will be more to come on that topic.

Elected officials are required to file campaign finance disclosure forms. As long as Heimlich is filing his in accordance with the law, then he is disclosing all his contributors. At that point, Portune only needs to rely on his alleged ability to read to find out who has given to who.

As always, we can count on Todd Portune to grandstand, while others get the job done.

Whether or not it was disclosed, or how, to put one of the leading "Reelect Heimlich" guys (along with a lawyer with a clear self-interest) onto that committee is simply over the top.

Having a political hack on board was more important than diversity.

Bold anon:

Please stop with the "Hindlick" and "piece of Schmidt" references. Speaking from the perspective of a liberal, you are damning your own cause. Start making intelligent, reasoned arguments. You look like an idiot every time you say "Hindlick." It's not clever.

Once again someone left a wRong wing nut loose !

Activities should be disclosed when there is even an appearence of the possibility of conflict !

As an attorney hindlick should at least know the code of professional responsibility ?

If it were a clean hands, arms length transaction, hindlick could have recluse himself from the vote and any good deal for the taxpayer would fly through the commission !

That was not the case and since hindlick's own brother questions his integrity, the public must question his integrity, as well !

hindlick lacked integrity, period !

Looks like Phil Heimlich's sister-in-law doesn't think much of him either.

Hey, isn't Phil the guy always lecturing everybody else about "family values?"
