Thor takes to the air waves

In the 2nd Congressional District, the dogfight on the Republican side between Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen has seemingly sucked up all available oxygen, but there are five Democratic candidates out there trying to be heard above the din.

One of them, Thor Jacobs, the Newtown businessman, is to the first to reach the airwaves with his message.

Jacobs has a radio ad running throughout the district - one that jumps on the timely issue of rising gasoline prices and record-breaking oil prices.

"Like you, I shake my head every time I fill up my tank,'' Jacobs says.

What America needs, Jacobs says, is "responsible oil policies that leave more in our pockets'' and less in the pockets of oil company CEOs.

One of Jacobs' Democratic primary opponents, Victoria Wulsin, has weighed in on rising gasoline prices as well. In an interview on WLWT (channel 5) and in the taping of a program to be shown on WKRC-TV Sunday, Wulsin has suggested a graduated gasoline tax as a solution.

Wulsin said she would rather see the tax based on income rather than actual vehicle consumption.

She said she hadn't thought through how it work - a tax charged at the pump on income "wouldn't be feasible,'' she said.

"I haven't gotten that far in my thinking,'' Wulsin said. "I'm willing to entertain any ideas.''

Thank goodness there are alternatives to Schmidt and McEwen. America needs a change of course and a return to balanced government. We need people that understand and are willing to deal with the real issues facing our nation. We need an electorate willing to think for themselves, rather than just rubber-stamping party choices.

Wulsin's comment calling for a gas tax based on income is so dumb I thought it came from Jean Schmidt. If you want to tax people more based on income, you do it by raising income taxes. A gas tax based on income isn't much more feasible than a Sales Tax based on income.

Anonymous has no clearer understanding of economics than he has of the McEwen vs. Schmidt/Chesley race.

McEwen is a proven statesman, who was very highly regarded by the Reagan Administration. He is articulate, principled and dedicated to the principles that made America great.

Snide comments are the only weapon of the Schmidt/Chesley campaign. Why employ them.

PROOF that Jim PARKER "is" the ONLY Democrat who WILL NOT raise your taxes...

Say what you want about Jean Schmidt. At least she isn't a political carpetbagger like Bob McEwen. After Bob loses the primary to Jean next week, he can move back to that mansion of his in Virginia - and go on representing rogue nations like Eritrea.

Gaby Downey is the only candidate talking straight in the 2nd. district.

She knows it is windfall profits and the citizens should not pay a tax on a culture of corruption and cronyism !

The solution is to clean house !

Wulsin looks pretty foolish floating that idea on TV when she hasn't thought through how to execute it. She comes across as ditzy, and yes, we know she's a doctor, but that doesn't mean she'd be brilliant as a legislator.

Yeah, thank goodness she's not a real person who moves in order to experience the American dream. Instead she is an unrespected member of Congress who was caught making up a degree, endorsements, and comments from a dignified Marine Colonel. But that Bob McEwen is a bad bad man.
