First pitch for the Freedom Center

President George W. Bush was in town last week to throw out the first pitch during Opening Day at Great American Ball Park.

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory threw a pitch right back at the president, one that apparently landed high-and-tight.

Mallory got to talk to the president for a few minutes during the game. Bush brought up the Underground Railroad Freedom Center, a place he visited a few years ago.

"I said it's a great place," Mallory recalled. "He said `It sure is Mayor.'"

"Then I said, `Well, they need money.'"

How much did the mayor ask for?

"$50 million," Mallory said. "It doesn't matter how much a project costs, you always ask for $50 million."

Mallory laughed, then said he didn't really ask for a specific amount.

But what of the president's reaction?

Mallory took a giant step sideways, indicating the president backed away from the pitch, considering it out of the strike zone.

"It was just like woosh," Mallory said, waiving his hand in front of his face, and revealing a blank expression afterward.

We can't afford to support the Freedom Center when all of our resources are needed to fight terrorists. Which would rather have? Freedom or Terrorism, the choice is yours.

The Freedom Center would make a nice jail facility.

They really need to come up with a new name for that place. Perhaps sell the naming right, it might as well demonstrate what society is; controlled by the corporations.

The White Guilt Museum would make a great Sports Bar, maybe jail beds on the top two floors and a bar below? And the first two posts here are almost not worthy of being commented on. But hell, you're dems. I'd like to see Kerry, Kennedy, Boxer, Feingold etc. throw a pitch. And I didn't know that fighting terrorism to create democratic states was not freedom, I'm confused at that post a lot. And finally, once again, YOU LOST!

Mr White Guilt - last time I checked your president had a fabulous 38% approval rating and is losing a war he had no business starting. And yeah, a bar with jail beds on the riverfront, that'll do it, maybe that will be the next idea from that idiot commissioner, what's his name, oh yeah, Heimlich. YOu know, it's funny, yeah, "we" lost the election but by having Bush re-elected who really has won? Nobody last time I checked and even your party is in a state of disarray as a result. Doesn't matter, maybe you can just cheat your way to victory this next time around

Do you press guys ever get tired of writing BS about Mallory? still can't tell you one thing he has done, except take credit for a couple of things he was not involved in.

And, talk about stopping the chaos...

The question of The Freedom Center is a complicated one. The Freedom Center was vastly oversold in the beginning. The City of Cincinnati will be asked to provide ongoing funding as well as the State of Ohio. Such additional funding was not contemplated by policymakers as the Freedom Center leadership team promised a healthy endowment and high visitation numbers guaranteeing its viability over the long term. We now see there is a $5.5 million dollar deficit-at least and sure to grow larger.

I believe that the Freedom Center has great national value. It is incumbent upon the Freedom Center leadership to bring a plan to policymakers and historians that will put the Freedom Center on a path of sustainability. The Freedom Center can be a tool of great learning about our country's past and a source of national and international tourism. The Freedom Center should first rethink its contents and acquire the rarest artifacts from the period including an original of The Emancipation Proclamation-this would draw visitors from around the world. The local heroes exhibits should be eliminated in an international museum. Most visitors would not know our local personalities and such displays are inconsistent with a museum designed for international and national greatness. Secondly, the historical themes have to genuinely reflect the pain of the times. Third, the Freedom Center should announce a $350 million dollar private endowment campaign so that it may sustain itself in perpetuity. These steps should be taken before the public is asked to approve more funding. I would be delighted if President Bush offered $50 million dollars for the Freedom Center.

If you have suggestions of how we can improve or save the Freedom Center please contact me at 614-466-1308, 513-281-5474 or at district33@ohr.state.oh.us
