Political payback?

David Pepper, one of the candidates vying for the Democratic nomination to take on Republican incumbent Hamilton County Commissioner Phil Heimlich in the fall, is picking up some impressive endorsements.

Perhaps the most surprising is from a former Hamilton County commissioner -- and a Republican at that.

John Dowlin endorses Pepper.

"I think he's mainly a Charterite," Dowlin said of Pepper, a Democrat.

There is a Procter & Gamble connection. Dowlin was a long-time P&G executive before his retirement. Pepper's father, John Pepper, is P&G's former chairman and chief executive officer.

But there also is a political connection, one that smacks of political payback.

In 2004, Dowlin was seeking re-election to his commission seat when he was challenged in the primary by fellow Republican Pat DeWine.

Heimlich endorsed DeWine who then defeated Dowlin.

Now, Dowlin is endorsing Heimlich's potential challenger.

"Phil and I are not friends," Dowlin said.

Heimlich is pleased that Dowlin endorsed Pepper.

"When I endorsed someone, at least it was a Republican," Heimlich said.

Heimlich endorsed DeWine over Dowlin, he said, because he was upset at what he viewed as Dowlin's free-spending ways while on the commission.

"If (Dowlin) is looking to re-create high-spending forms of government, he's endorsing the right candidate," Heimlich said.

Is anyone friends with Phil Heimlich?

I'd like to see a list of 5 specific things Heimlich has accomplished in the 4 years he's been a commissioner. I cannot think of 1 thing which has benefited residents of Hamilton County. All talk, no progress in solving the problems of this county.

Dowlin won't be the only Republican voting for Pepper.

Not only will he not be the only wrong winger voting for Pepper, but, even those who did not support David for mayor is behind him for commissioner. He is the right man at the right time. David's fit is much better at county as his background is diverse with overseas experience.

Plus, David will get the "anybody but heimlich" vote.

Me's think Phil will choke on his own words !!!

Yes ... Phil Heimlich, the anti-government candidate who has never, ever had a job outside of government.

I'm not even surprised to read this. John Dowlin was Bob Bedinghaus' partner in crime in expanding the size of government every chance they got. It's no surprise to see the bitter old man coming out to endorse another big government advocate in David Pepper.

Last year John Dowlin endorsed Jean Schmidt for Congress. Like Bob Bedinghaus, Jean Schmidt was a tireless advocate for higher taxes and more spending. I got to hand it to the big government crowd - they always stick together.

Phil is going to be sad to see that spending under Pepper barely increased at all at City Council--less than in the budgets Phil approved both at the City and County.

His only line is basically a lie.

Phil is going to be sad to find out that budgets Pepper approved at City Hall barely increased spending at all, and certainly increased spending less than Phil's budgets at the County or City.

The only lame line he has is basically a lie.

Heimlich endorsed DeWine over Dowlin, he said, because he was upset at what he viewed as Dowlin's free-spending ways while on the commission.

This "tax & spend" line is wearing thin. It's obvious that Heimlich wanted to install DeWine as a rubber stamp vote for his personal agenda, which Dowlin simply wouldn't go along with: killing Drake, firing Krings, the Bengals lawsuit, and handing the Banks project to pirates selected by Dick Weiland and Ron Roberts.

I second the question above. What has Heimlich done for the county other than drive it into a ditch?

Good question. Phil goes through such different phases -- it's hard to recall his liberal days.

2:28
Not sure either. What does he say he's done?

3:04
Very true. Pepper will get a ton of support he didn't get last time.

3:13
Has Phil really never had another job outside government?

3:43
President Bush supports Schmidt. So does Portman and Boehner. The Right to Life backs Schmidt. Last year Steve Chabot endorsed Jean Schmidt and gave her a bunch of money. Chabot even gave Bob Taft money. So did a lot of Republicans, including Dennis Hastert.

Republicans are always sticking together.

5:12/5:13
David will win. But Phil won't choke, he'll still be yapping.

6:58
If Phil thought he could make DeWine his puppet, than he's in big trouble.

he goes thru phases. anyone remember his liberal days?

2:28
can't think of a thing he has accomplished at the county or on city council for that matter.

3:04
david will win.

3:13
really no other job for phil?

3:43
president bush and rob portman back schmidt. so does right to life. steve chabot gave schmidt a bunch of money and an endorsement last year. chabot even gave taft money. speaker dennis hastert backs schmidt.

all the republicans are in it together (and growing government).

5:12/5:13
phil is a loud mouth.

6:58
phil should take dewine's lead and not the other way around.

A ditch with no worker protective barriers, thus, a huge landslide cave in with the tax payers buried.

Hopefully, Todd and David can rescue the county before we all run out of breathing room.

9:04 - I missed Phil's "liberal days."

I only remember "prayer breakfasts" with anti-abortion extremist John Willke, Phil Burress, and their ilk, along with denunciations of porn, gay rights, and civil liberties. Then there was the pandering to Keith Fangman and the cops during the riots.

So when exactly was Phil's "liberal phase?" I must have blinked and missed it.

so when will Pepper call for a special levy to support the slave center? His daddy said they're going broke and that he won't spend any of his millions to prop it up.

Stephanie Dumas is going to beat dirty David inspite of the Enquirers clear bias. David Pepper is a young Phil Hiemlich with less experience.

He should bow out before he destroys what's left of his political career.

Mayor Stephanie Dumas is running for County Commissioner and the Enquirer refuses to cover her because she's a black and a women.

• 12 years of Governmental experience which included 6 years as the Mayor and Presiding Judge of Forest Park
• 30 Years as a Mental Health Professional and Advocate for Children
• Graduate of the University of Cincinnati
• State of Ohio Licensed Social Worker
• Federal Head Start Peer Reviewer
• Member of S.O.A.R Development Board
• Liaison to OKI Regional Council of Governments, Hamilton County Municipal League and Ohio Municipal League

That's the kind of experience we need at the county.

The Freedom Center was as ill conceived as the Banks is. To debate which of these two candidates is better is an exercise in stupidity. They have both screwed the taxpayers, done whatever they please without listening to constituents, and get big checks from fat cats that have a hidden agenda. With these two you have a choice alright. Luvs or Pampers

Bravo post 5:55! Dowlin's wrong- Pepper isn't a Charterite, he's a DINO, so no surprise that he'll get Repub support. And yeah it wouldn't surprise me to see Pepper back a levy for the Freedom Ctr. Pisses me off that the Museum Ctr & Zoo had to do levies but Daddy Pepper expects city, state & fed to bail out his baby.

at 9:27 PM, March 15, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pepper always recused himself on Freedom Center issues at Council. Of course he'll do the same now.

at 10:04 PM, March 15, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Republibrat would do well to exit this race sooner than later. He is obviously out classed by Mayor Dumas.

Perhaps, we should support that center !

Our location was history in the making. Our great city was a passing ground for those denied basic civil rights !

We can not forget history while we are progressing. To do so, dooms us to repeat it !

Sorry, but, I think Bush could learn a lot from the history of Hitler !

If we want our great city and county to move forward, we must embrace history and promote the arts.

Tourism should be our lifeblood.

We have a lot to offer and the Underground Museum is a great addition !

From our city you can travel to Ripley Ohio and see a beautiful place and en extension to the underground railroad !

Who is the Dufuss promoting Mayor Dufuss ?

She seems like a great social worker, not a countywide viable candidate, period !

Pehaps, Todd and Pepper can secure a nice position at Family services for her ?

That way the county benefits from everyone's experience !

Why isn't anyone talking about how Stephanie Dumas lied to the Democratic Party two years ago about running for county commissioner?

at 8:59 PM, March 16, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Certainly someone so dedicated to children would not lie !

Would they ?

Post 10:46 pm- is the exclamation point key permanently stuck on your keyboard? What do you do when you REALLY want to emphasize something, since you've already ended every sentence with an exclamation point? Sure looks like Peter Deane's style but he usually signs his comments.

at 7:02 PM, March 18, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous liars can't think of anything to attack Dumas about so they keep saying the same BS. Stephanie already adressed why she didn't run last time. She was working to support her family and didn't have daddy's trust fund.

It's funny how the Pepperbots dare question her integrity when Pepper clearly doesn't have any. He thinks he's entitled to this position because Daddy's friends can raise a lot of money.

It'll be good to see him lose bigger than last time.

One thing I never got: Phil Heimlich and Todd Portune were on council when the Paul Brown Stadium deal was struck, right? They voted for the land transfer AFTER the terms of the lease were a matter of public record, right? (Remember Todd's famous picture turning back the clock?) So, how do they get off acting so dumbstruck at the terms of the lease?

The only the chance the Republicans have of defeating David Pepper is to beat him in the primary on May 2nd. If he wins in May he will have the momentum to go all the way in November.
