Much Ado About McEwen's Ad

The big news out of Rep. Jean Schmidt's campaign yesterday was that the radio ads of her GOP primary opponent, Bob McEwen, had been pulled. Here's an excerpt from the news release e-mailed to reporters:
2nd District - The McEwen campaign can't seem to get their act together. Their first attempt at advertising is riddled with inaccuracies and breaks federal law. "The ad must be immediately removed from the airwaves," said Allen Freeman of the Schmidt for Congress campaign.

McEwen's campaign released the ad late last week that, among other things, takes credit for the Contract with America. Bob McEwen had already lost two races for congress by the time Contract was unveiled in September 2004.

"Bob had lost in 1992 and the special election in 1993, but now he takes credit for the writing of the Contract--amazing. We will give him the point that he was in Virginia, but he was no where near the Contract with America."

The radio message lacks the required disclaimer indicating who paid for the advertisement. While it contains the BCRA disclaimer stating that McEwen approved the ad, he must also disclose who paid for the ad.

"This man has run for congress repeatedly for almost 20 years, you would think he would obey the rules, then again disclosure has never been his strong suit," Freeman concluded.

Is that true?

Well, sort of, said Michael Harlow, spokesman for the McEwen campaign said today. One of the stations running the ads wanted an additional disclaimer, explaining that the McEwen campaign paid for the ad, added to the spot. Once that was done, it was back up and on the air, Harlow said.

"There was absolutely no concern about the content of the ads," Harlow said.

But there's more:

"We’ve liked the response we’ve been getting on these ads so much that we’re increasing our buy," Harlow said.

After falsely claiming 2 Congressional endorsements and getting caught referring to young Republicans as "young Hitlers", Mean Jean's Nazi Team better have something more substantive than this to counter McEwen. Now that the disclaimer has been altered to the media's satisfaction, we should get back to talking about the issues, such as why Mean Jean voted for Bob Taft's tax increases and the rest of his failed agenda.

Mean Jean can't say anything nice, can't say anything productive, can't say anything positive, so she nit picks her opponent, and in the process shows her true colors.

A fine, fine representative we have, don't we.

Rob Portman never behaved this way.

Jean's a moron. the COA was in 1994 not 2004, like their press release says. Gross incompetence.

It is a shame Mr. Freeman didn't bother to listen to the radio ad. It says, "and helped write a reform agenda that led to the Contract with America".

Never claims to have written the contract.

Amazing how Jean and her minions cannot get seem to get a single thing right (check Freeman's recollection of the date of the contract). He is an idiot!

Yeah, Jean's pretty dumb, but it's the CwA (Contract with America), not COA. I guess you're pretty dumb, yourself.

I'm not a Republican, but it looks like Jean Schmidt will be taken care of before we (democrats) get a shot at her. I might vote for Mr. McEwan in the fall just for getting rid of the idiot Schmidt.

You're right about Portman and that's why he got 70% of the vote!!!

The Schmidt campaign's obsession with Bob's previous residencies is reaching pathological dimensions.

If changing residencies is such a sin to them, then I guess none of them voted for Dick Cheney, since he had to change his residency to run for vice-president. The Constitution does not allow the President and VP to be from the same state, so Cheney changed his residence to Wyoming very shortly before the nominating convention.

So who did they vote for in 2000?

There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents the president and vice president from being from the same state. The problem is that, according to the 12th Amendment, an elector cannot vote for both from his own state. This means that had Cheney not moved back to Wyoming either he or Bush would have had to forgo the Texas electoral votes.

Please, Jean Schmidt, cut your hair, throw away the St John Knits, watch some news instead of The Sopranos & Desperate Housewives, learn to think before you open your mouth. Do you really want all those RTL pro-lifers to know you are hooked on that modern American morality play, "Desperate Housewives"? The 2nd District Embarrassment just goes on & on. Please, Bob McEwen, rescue us!

Mr. Mcewen, although our of congress continued to work with Republican leadsers to develop the concept of the Contract With America. We as Republicans camapigned on the "Contract" idea for over a year and a half before receiving the support of voters across America. Mr. McEwen, an innovator, can claim the Contract With America because he assisted in fomenting the concept.
McEween still stands for those principals which some current Republicans have strayed from.
