Neither snow nor sleet nor dark of night.....

.....can separate a politician from a room full of money.

Bob McEwen, trying to up-end Jean Schmidt in the May 2 Republican congressional primary, was up and at 'em before dawn Tuesday morning, sliding into downtown Cincinnati through the early-morning snowstorm with his wife Liz for a $250-a-plate fundraiser at the Queen City Club.

The headliner at the McEwen event was former GOP vice presidential candidate and HUD secretary Jack Kemp, a former Buffalo Bills quarterback for whom Tuesday's version of a Cincinnati blizzard was nothing more than a snow squall.

Kemp, who served with McEwen in Congress in the Reagan years, gave his usual stump speech extolling the virtues of tax cuts and free market economics, declaring that the present Republican-contreolled Congress is a little short on effective advocates for his point of view.

"Frankly, there aren't many people who can articulate our ideas,'' said Kemp. "I'm embarrassed by the Republican party at this time.''

He also repeated exactly the same opening joke that he used last spring when he appeared at another McEwen event at the Eastgate Holiday Inn - a shaggy-dog story about how he gave a protestor at the 2004 Republican National Convention his comeuppance, a story which does not improve with age.

"Frankly,'' to borrow the word Kemp is fond of starting sentences with, the nearly 100 Republicans in the audience were at least as interesting as the featured speaker.

Hamilton County Sheriff Simon Leis was front-and-center, and so, too, were two of the founders ofthe national right-to-life movement, John and Barbara Willke, the couple who created the local anti-abortion group that Schmidt used to chair.

McEwen's campaign staff was sweating bullets shortly before the 7:45 a.m. fundraiser began, fearing that the foul weather would mean Kemp would be performing before a half-empty room. Many of the faithful showed up late, but they showed up; and ended up filling nearly all the tables in the basement meeting room.

I was there, and I have to wonder if Howard and I were at the same event. Kemp did more than just speak about cutting taxes. He talked about cutting tax RATES to stimulate GROWTH. And his defense of these tax RATE cuts were not just confined to the Reagan years. He cited examples in pre-Thatcher England, Calvin Collidge, and the Bible (the book of Genesis to be exact).

Oh yeah, it looks like he was out smoking a cig when Anthony Munoz spoke about why he is supporting Bob.

I heard from a co-worker that all of Cincinnati was there this morning. She mentioned several Cincinnati GOP party officials, more than a dozen elected officals and an impresive list of community leaders. Even with the terrible snow and ice, people came to support McEwen and his bid for Congress, pretty impressive.

I was there and yes Howard, it was the same story and I laughed a second time. But the thing that you missed was that most of the checks were larger than the $250.00 request. A numbr of the ones I saw at the sign in table were aroundthe limit of $2,100.00

I will go to bed tonight praying for Bob McEwen and his fortunes in May.

Character is not just honesty and integrity, it is courage, self confidence and vision.

What most people miss is that his greatest "character development" is his courage to take on an incumbent member of the U.S. Congress because she needs to go.

Whatever has gone before is certainly relevant, but what is today and what lies ahead is more relevant.

This man has undertaken this monumental task, has performed it admirably, and has inspired my confidence because of the grace, good humor, courage and humility needed to get it done.

His self-sacrifice for OUR benefit shows a depth of character I did not see, or perhaps did not understand in the 2005 primary election.

And that speaks more about Bob McEwen than anything I have seen before.

God bless this man.

Jean Schmidt, please go, go, go away.

Lord, save us from her.

bob mcewen does not deserve to be anywhere near the u.s. house of representatives other than with a visitors pass. he abused the office and trust his constituents entrusted him with. bob mcewen is exactly what is wrong with the united states congress. he's a borderline crook and huckster. he is simply interested in his seat on the gov't gravy train. ms. schmidt with all of her faults is interested in her agenda which from a republican point of view is on target. she has been loyal and consistent in her positions. she has selected issues that make sense for her district. she's done a bang-up job with the ford plant situation. the center of the second district doesn't sit on fourth street anymore. when everyone realizes it falls somewhere in clermont county all of this will make sense to the folks in condos and funny houses in anderson township.

rob portman spoiled us. a "blue blooded populist" with great intellect. ms. schmidt will remain strong for this district.

What is up with everyone on here who are self-described conservatives, yet seem to only pick and choose what standards and convictions will govern their thought processes. You are all blinded by politics. Bob McEwen is a statesman. I think Jean Schmidt is a good politician and can be kind/sincere, but our nation is at a crucial cross-road. The status quo of the Republican Party will only lead to its impotence in the future and its time we elect statesmen and legislators who will put America before politics and power!

So Bob is a "crook and a huckster" Nice throw somemore names around. Of course you have nothing to back that. Remember people, 300 people in congress were investigated on writing checks and Bob was found to not be at fault. But keep saying the word crook when it is not true. Please tell me something that Jean has done except piss everyone off.
Also Bob looking to get on the "gravy train". SO not ture but you can just throw that out also. Why not meet the man. Find out what he is really like. Of course you have never done that. You might actually like Bob if you did that. Most people that listen to and meet him realize how sincere and real he is. He is what we need in congress.

Just keep throwing out your words and lies. People will see through this.

struck a nerve eh??? crook huckster crook huckster

give me a break. i've seen enough of bob mccewen up close and personal to know he is just that. CONGRESSMAN BOB MCEWEN.....please. i was there when big bob slid into his seat at captain swisher's memorial service about three minutes before the photo ops outside by the casket. pathetic.

this guy is interested in lining his own pockets. there is much proof to this statement. believe me when i say we have not heard the last of big bob's
blatant disregard for election rules and ethics. can we all say....."voter fraud". come on enquirer... do your homework. this guy has to be revealed for what he is. report the facts. let the public decide.

More Lies!!!!

Lets see he wants to line his pockets by becoming a congressman. Last I saw you don't become rich by getting to congress. Spread more lies about a photo op. I am sure that Jean has never done a photo op. Or is she too busy saying stupid things everytime she opens her mouth.

Once again throw mud and yell things like Voter fraud, etc. Instead of talking about who will best lead this district and represent our district the right way. Bob is the obvious choice.
