Former U.S. Rep. McEwen gets public reprimand

A public reprimand is being issued to congressional candidate Bob McEwen by the Ohio Elections Commission.

Thursday, a 6-1 commission found McEwen made a false statement last spring by using the word "congressman" in front of his name in radio and television campaign ads as well as literature during the primary election. McEwen is a former congressman.

The state commission found McEwen in violation of the false statement statute, but did not refer the case for prosecution, according to Philip Richter, executive director of the state commission.

Richter was writing the letter of public reprimand today. It will be sent to McEwen, his attorney and Thomas W. Blumer of Mason, who filed the complaint against McEwen on Dec. 29.

McEwen, from Anderson Township, is running against U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt in the Republican Party primary May 2.

“We conceded,’’ McEwen said. “If anyone was misled, we apologize.’’

McEwen said a formal statement would be made later today.

A separate Ohio elections complaint was filed against Schmidt this week by James P. Urling of Cincinnati, accusing her of posting false endorsements on her Web site from U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, the Family Research Council and others.

Richter said McEwen, through Columbus attorney Charles “Rocky” Saxbe, acknowledged improperly using the title congressman in front of his name in campaign ads.

Chairwoman Catherine Cunningham, a Republican, was the only member of the bipartisan commission to oppose the reprimand.

The only other punishment could have been a referral for prosecution, Richter said, which won’t be made. There are no automatic fines.

Blumer today offered no additional comment beyond what he has posted on his own blog:
http://www.bizzyblog.com/?p=1647

It says, in part: "I would descibe the result as disappointing, but not discouraging. Mr. McEwen is on record now as having violated Ohio Election Law in the 2005 Second District Congressional Primary, and is to my knowledge the only one of approximately 16 candidates of both parties who ran in that primary you can say that about.

“He is also, to my knowledge, the only candidate of either party who has been found to have violated Ohio Election Law of all the candidates running in the 2006 Second District Congressional Primary.

“That’s not small potatoes, despite the lack of tangible punishment beyond a reprimand,” Blumer wrote.

Accepting responsibility when caught? What a concept. I can think of a certain Congresswoman who might want to try that.

Things keep getting worse for Carpet-Bagging, Check-Bouncing Bob McEwen. He should go back to his home in the DC suburb of Fairfax Station, Virginia. He has a home valued at $1,062,030 there. Yup, Fairfax County, Virginia records online show that McEwen has a MILLION dollar home in the DC suburbs. Does anybody believe that the $105,000 apartment in Anderson, that he bought less than a year ago, is McEwen's permanent residence? Carpet Bagging Bob needs to go home to Fairfax Station and his job as a lobbyist for foreign governments in Washington. Bob, years ago your check bouncing scandal cost the Republicans a safe seat to the Democrats. You then MOVED to the second district and LOST AGAIN to Rob Portman. You then MOVED AGAIN to Washington to become a lobbyist for foreign governments. Portman left his seat to join the President's administration and you then bought an apartment here so that you could claim you live here. Well, you were rejected again (3 times in a row?) by the voters and decided to come back to lose a fourth time. Don't insult our intelligence. Go back to lobbying for Uzbekistan and leave Ohio alone.

Now if only the local wrong wing nuts stood up and took responsibility ?

What about all those unlawful, deceiving and misleading judicial candidate advertisements that the wrong wing party misleader, Vincent, signed off on and the local wing nuts paid for? One would think somebody the wrong wing nominates to the county board of election would at least know the election laws ? After all isn't the misleader, Vincent, a Lie-yer ?

I guess someone has to file a complaint ?

Sure takes a lot of research though. Do you think they believe they're getting away with it ?

Me's don't think so !!!

Schmidt happens.

This is nothing. People refer to former elected officials like that all the time (ie. President Clinton, President George H.W. Bush). This is just another attempt to keep the status quo of Schmidt in office.

Interesting that McEwen's offenses from a June 2005 primary were so offensive, that one of Schmidt's schmucks waited until 2006 to file the charge. Conveniently timed for the election.

So when does Mean Jean get brought to justice for taking gifts from lobbyists and failing to report them? When Bob Taft did this, he was convicted of 4 criminal charges. Governor Taft and her close ally Mean Jean should receive the same justice under the law.

http://edit.enquirer.gannettonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050708/NEWS01/507090320&template=printpicart

Former State Rep. Jean Schmidt, who is running for Congress, allegedly failed to report dinner and tickets to a Cincinnati Bengals' game that she and other state lawmakers received from a California biotech company.

Schmidt, who is running for the 2nd District Congressional seat, and three other lawmakers should have reported the entertainment package as a gift, said Tony Bledsoe, Ohio's legislative inspector general.

Bledsoe, however, said he cannot investigate Schmidt because she is no longer a state legislator.

Reps. Jim Raussen, R-Cincinnati; Diana Fessler, R-New Carlisle, and Michelle Schneider, R-Cincinnati, along with Schmidt, a Republican from Loveland, each should have reported the evening as a gift on their April disclosure forms, Bledsoe said.

Luxury seats to the Oct. 25 Monday night football game cost $300, and the total tab for the evening, which included dinner at an Italian restaurant, topped $5,000.

Because of a lobbyist's involvement, the event falls under the state law that prohibits lawmakers from accepting gifts from lobbyists valued at more than $75, Bledsoe said.

"I have a hard time thinking I wouldn't remember someone taking me out for a night like that," Bledsoe said. "Apparently it was a very nice Monday night out in Cincinnati."

If this were nothing, he wouldn't have been found guilty.

Former presidents being called "President Clinton" or "President Carter" is fine... as long as they're not in a campaign. Using a title you don't currently hold to affect an election is ILLEGAL, no matter how you look at it.

Evidently Jeff has some trouble. The complaint that McEwen was found guilty of was filed last year. The new complaint is about McEwen misdeeds of this year. Too bad that carpetbagging isn't a crime.

To anonymous who posted at 5:03,
As far as pushing class envy, anybody who has the common sense that God gave gravel can read my original post and see that I am concerned with residency. Of course, only those who have the aforementioned common sense will understand.

It all comes down to the FACT that McEwen violated election law, the FACT that he lives in a million dollar home in the DC suburbs (yet claims that an apartment worth $100K is his residence), which supports the FACT that McEwen is a carpetbagger, and we can't forget the FACT that McEwen was booted by the voters for the FACT that he made kited checks.

Your good carpetbagging, check bouncing, election law violating friend needs to go back to his real home on Rice Field Place in the DC suburbs and to his real job as a lobbyist for foreign governments like Uzbekistan.

Poor McEwen had a very bad week. Radio ads pulled because of Federal Election law violations, charges pending. Then he is found guilty of Ohio election law violations. Now he faces four more Ohio Ethics commission violations. I guess thats what makes him a good lobbyist. NO ETHICS! McEwen go home to Virginia where you belong.

Rink a Dink a Do-nothing !

It all comes down to the FACT that McEwen violated election law

You are a hypocritical wrong wing nut operative !

You don't care about election law violations or you would be condemning your misleader, Vincent, at 700 walnut and dins lawbreaker !

Rink, you post at the party hack blog, so, why don't you put a note on their desk about their lawbreaking at work on monday!

Oh no, you're busy picking that greenberg let us !

Let us be unlawful, misleading, deceiving, suppressive, tax prosecutorial, etc., etc., etc.

To that last "anonymous" guy.

Thank you so much. I'm very pleased to have been promoted to "operative". Also, I thought this was a discussion about Bob McEwen being found guilty by the OEC.

Thank you for the amusing plays on my name, I hadn't heard those since Mrs. Hancock's class in the sixth grade.

Rink a Dink:

It doesn't surprise us that you have pent inferiority complexes since six grade !

What does surprise us is:

If you are so concerned about Bob"s lawbreaking, why do you ramble about residency.

You certainly didn't call the county money launderer and present prosecutor a carpet bagger after his coin deals.

You are on very, very, thin ice !!!

I find it unfortunate that you don't reveal your identity to us, maybe that says something about you. I really can't pass a judgement upon that unless the facts are known, however. I fear, however that your drinking and posting has caused problems, as your most recent seems to show a complete lack of sense. So, moving back to your good friend, carpetbagging, check kiting, election law violating Bob McEwen...what do you think about his claim that a tiny apartment in Anderson is his home when he has a million dollar mansion in the DC suburbs? What do you think about 166 bounced checks? What do you think about the evidence that shows that he ran his campaign illegally from his congressional office? What do you think about Bob being the lobbyist for Uzbekistan? What do you think of cowards who hide behind anonymity?

It doesn't surprise me that any wrong wing nut would prefer to attack and discredit the messenger because they can't handle the truth in the message ! Do you need to rat the blogger to the party hacks, so they can implement their program ? They tried and failed, lol !

Some of us don't need the personal recognition which you so gravely crave, because we fight for the good of all !

You should take a lesson from your own and start hanging with that Southgate, Mich bushy pioneer. It was all about him, as well. This should be a clear indication, you are clueless about your failed party.

I think in this great country one can live and move as often as one wishes. Has he broken a resident law ? No.

The alternative for your wrong wing party is full of Schmidt !

Frankly, I encourage all to vote NO on each of them ! It will take democratic leadership to put the people first and get us back on the course of fiscal responsibility and away from corporate welfare !

You want to know what I think ?

VOTE DEMOCRAT, period !

It's pretty bad when the only two Republican candidates in the Southern Ohio 2nd Congressional District have people using words like "GUILTY" and "EVIL" and "UNDERQUALIFIED" and "CHECK-BOUNCING" to describe them.

I refuse to capitalize upon Jean Schmidt's and Bob McEwen's lack of ethics and qualifications to benefit my own political position.

On 3-17-05 Collin Rink accused Bob McEwen of bouncing checks in what has been called the house banking scandal. Had Collin used anything but Schmidt talking points, the realtor would have found that Mcewen was accused along with over 300 members of the House of bouncing checks. A special Prosecutor was appointed and did not conclude his investigation until after the general election. He provided Congressman McEwen with a letter of exhonoration that stated he was not found guilty of any crime. Six members of Congress were found guilty and only one was from Ohio. Mary Rose Okar , a Democrat from Cleveland was one of the six. Charles Rangel of New York was found guilty and still serves in Congress.
Before acccusing someone perhaps you should check some facts, first.
Your action sionce this information is availabele in public sources means Mr.McEwen, a now former member of Congress, can sue you for liable.
Before accusing someone of having two residences and one out of Ohio, you should check some facts. Bob McEwen has always had an Ohio residence. He has had the following documents, drivers license, license [plates, income tax real estate tax paid in Ohio since he turned 18. He has owned real property here and his adult son lives in the Virginia property.
he is Ohio born and is Ohio breed and when he dies he'll be Ohio dead. Ohio law only says you must reside in the state and not in the district. He lives in the district, in Anderson Township.
I have been to his lovely condo had dinner in private with the man. He is a decent , honorable man and thus is unworthy of your contempt.

The truth is a defense to your false claims of libel !

Colon although full of Schmidt does have the constitutional right to voice his opinion, especially on political public figures.

If you have broken bread with evil doers, shame on you.

He bounced checks, period !

Now, sue me !

A constitutional right to voice an opinion does not mean a right to tell an untruth.
Why don't you do your homework? Call a librarian and ask them to look up the reference on Lexus Nexus. The New York Times journalist that covered the House Banking Scandal was a David Johnston. His articles started on September 9 and went through the 12th of December, 1992. Johnston included a copy of the exhonoration letter sent to House members. A total of three artivcles exist and should be readily available to a serious journalist or to anyone wanting to know the truth.
Telling lies intentionally ,even about a public persona, is subject to the liable laws. The truth is McEwen did not bounce any checks. It was investigated by Special Prosecutor Malcolm R Wilkey, a retired Federal Appeals Court Judge. He was appointed by William Barr, Attorney General of the United States and was assisted by FBI agents in his investigation.
Quit lying. It is beneath you and makes your candidate look as pathetic as she is.
A Clermont County Republican Central Committee Memebr
Public information, properly checked will determine if you are subject to suit for liable. Atty Chris Finney has indicated by his complaint that he is capable to taking up Atty Bob McEwen's cause. Think twice, check your facts more than once before you defame a man.

Wow it is amazing when those that support Jean in this election are shown the fact of the "check bouncing" they resort to childish comeback statements. Facts are over 300 people in congress were investigated and Bob was found not to be gulity. It was a time when the house and senate ran a bad system. But to many out there it does not matter if you are found inocent. You will not just throw out childish comments. When the facts dont mix with your false accusations you become like a bunch of crybabies.

Hey Rink, by the way where are you from and where did you grow up?? You must have had it so bad to talk about someones expensive home. I think we know that is not the case.
Wow keep saying Carpet-bagging(not true Bob has always been an Ohio Resident) or talk about having two homes(that makes him a bad person) Also funny Rink you now have increased the price of that house by almost $200,000 in the last week. Ever been to DC?? KNow what a million gets you there??? Hey Rink instead of telling lying or throwing out lame one liners on everything you write. Tell me why Jean is so good. Oh yea you only like to name call and throw out words like "million dollar home."

Have you ever met or talked to Bob?? Do you know anything about him, his family?? Ever met one or more of his numerous adopted kids who are all wonderful, polite, well spoken, young men and ladies. Kids are a great reflection of their parents and those kids are wonderful.

Stop throwing mud till you at least try to get to know the canidates. If you still don't like a canidate then tell me and everyone why Jean is so good.

Just once something postive instead of insults, lies and twisting of the truth.
