Enquirer article on Schmidt gets new life

An Aug. 21, 1984, article in The Cincinnati Enquirer by reporter Bob Weston got some renewed attention in a Capitol Hill newspaper today. The Enquirer piece was headlined "Spunky Delegate Says GOP Must Loosen Up."

Take one guess who that "spunky" delegate was.

The story starts like this...
Her fellow Republican delegates from the Cincinnati area don't know quite what to make of Jeannette Schmidt.

Some of them wanted to duck for cover when they heard her boo Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole on the floor of the Republican National Convention Tuesday night.

Others were aghast when they heard her complain at a breakfast caucus Monday to Cleveland Mayor George Voinovich about women's toilet facilities at the Cleveland Grand Prix auto race.

"She doesn't seem too lady-like to me," remarked Connie Hensley, a 2nd District delegate from Bridgetown.

The story goes on and on. Check back here later. If we can figure out how to upload a .pdf file of it, we'll do so. In the meantime, here are some of Schmidt's more interesting quotes from the article:

On dancing: "None of the Republicans wanted to dance," she said, adding that she was sure her husband, Peter, would not mind when he saw her picture in The Enquirer dancing with a local cowpoke.

On being a housewife: "Mrs. Schmidt, mother of one child, disdains the word 'housewife.' An aerobics dance teacher who lives near Loveland, she calls herself the Republicans' answer to Jane Fonda."

On Dole: "I hate that woman," she said loudly, with a sour expression on her face. "I just can't stand her. Anyone who wants to force an increase in the drinking age to 21. She can send our boys off to fight wars when they're 17 and 18, but won't let them drink till they're 21. That stinks."

One more negative blog post about the Republicans.

"Jean Gone Wild?" There's a video that wouldn't sell even on the surliest of infomercials.

Check out the Hill article where Schmidt refers to young republicans as "Hitlers". How is Barry Bennet going to spin this? With every controversial and shameful comment, she destroys the credibility of this district. Thank you for your time Jean, but it’s time for you to make the classy move and step down. The only way this office can recover her embarrassment is by her resignation. Knowing Jean though, she will continue making a mockery of that solemn office until she is voted out in May. Thank you for your service, goodbye.

Now we know that Schmidt's mental instability is nothing new. It's bad enough when a politician compares to their opponents to Hitler, but here Mean Jean was doing it to her fellow Republicans.

I see Mean Jean handles differences of opinions well. If you look too somber for her, you're a young Hitler. If a woman tries to raise the drinking age, she's going to scream, "I hate that woman," and boo her at the Republican National Convention.

That's the first time I've agreed with Schmidt.

It's funny how many articles you'll write about her and you won't write one sentence about Stephanie Dumas and her campaign for County Commissioner.

Is it because she's black or a Democrat or both?

Well, simply put, Jean Schmidt's soon to be finished political career is news. She's a sitting U.S. Congresswoman who hates veterans, is the laughing-stock of her party, and is about to get killed in a primary by a check-bouncing, disgraced Virginian. Dumas's soon to be finished political career includes being mayor of a small town, soon being killed in a primary for a race she should have run two years ago, but chickened out of. Dumas is not news.

When are both the Republican and Democratic parties in Hamilton County going to put forth candidates with some possibility of statesmanship? A life-long Republican, I would never vote for this woman for any office. Her failure to research matters before opening her mouth shows how uncouth, discourteous, and dangerous she is.

Dumas did not chicken out! Dumas explained this in an interview (of course it wasn't covered by the Enquirer)

Stephanie Dumas says:
13 Mar 2006 at 02:50 pm | #

Most of my supporters know why I was unable to run two years ago but for those of you who are inquisitive about it, I’ll explain. I worked for an agency that recieves Federal funding and therefore participation in a partisian election was forbidden. I came to the agency as FP Mayor of a non-partisian council and did not know that campaigning would mean the loss of my job at the agency. It was a hard decision to make because I was the endorsed democratic candidate. Being the only bread winner in the family, it was a no brainer I had to stay at work. Fast forward to now, I’ve retired with 30plus years of PERS service and have resigned from the above mentioned agency 3.5 weeks ago to focus all my energies on the commissioner race.

Dumas IS news and the fact that the Enquirer won't cover her only proves it. What the Enquirer doesn't cover in this city is always more important than what they do cover and all they ever cover is what white folks like you in Cincinnati want to hear, not the truth.

Any candidate with her experience and credentials that can deliver us from Pepper and Heimlich is NEWS especially with The Banks project on the line.

Jean Schmidt was toast the minute she opened her mouth with that comment to Senator Murtha. She might have lasted if it hadnt' been for that debacle or if she could have proved she learned something but she hasn't. She's as crass as ever.

Get over the fact that Stephanie Dumas and focus on her as a candidate that truly has something to offer Hamilton County: Stephanie Dumas.

That last bit should read:

Get over the fact that Stephanie Dumas is an African-American and focus on her as a candidate that truly has something to offer Hamilton County.

If we look at the roads they have traveled it indicates the trajectory with which they are moving. Pepper and Heimlich both come from priviledged families and went to the best schools. Dumas grew up in Avondale and graduated from UC. She has accomplished more than these other two clowns put together. From humble beginnings she has overcome many challenges. She has experience in TIF financing and has dealt with blight, transforming problem properties into public spaces. She is a public servant in the truest sense. She has no strings attached like D&P have. She does more than just talking about having the peoples interest at heart. I believe in her because I look at all three resumes and she is the only one that has ever worked for a living.
