Dusty vs. the Whistleblower

Hamilton County Auditor Dusty Rhodes used to love dishing the dirt with Jim Schifrin, owner of a local gossip sheet.

Schifrin, who dubbed himself "Charles Foster Kane," used to mention Rhodes often in The Whistleblower. And Rhodes was a frequent source for Schifrin's gossip.

That changed, though, when Schifrin received his latest tax bill from the Hamilton County Auditor's office.

Schifrin bought his Birney Lane home -- 2,695 square feet on more than one acre in Anderson Township -- for $116,000 in 1986. Last year, the Auditor's office valued it at $188,400. But after the state-mandated six-year reappraisal, the value of Schifrin's home rose this year to $265,000.

The result: his property taxes rose from $3,300 last year to $4,100 this year.

The other result: Schifrin got mad at Rhodes, he said, not speaking to him or returning his calls -- and using his gossip rag to attack Rhodes.

The latest, Rhodes said, was Schifrin printing the telephone number to Rhodes' direct line at the Auditor's office in the Whistleblower, which is e-mailed free to readers.

As of 11 a.m. today, Rhodes said his telephone hasn't rung.

It will, Schifrin promised.

"Tell him to 'bite me,' " Schifrin said of Rhodes. "Those (expletives) came out here and lied to me. Lied about me."

The feud goes back to a meeting where Rhodes was to introduce U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Westwood, but spent "four minutes and 58 seconds" of the five-minute introduction bashing Schifrin for complaining about his increasing property tax bill.

"Dusty spend all of his time (expletive)ing around on the radio and babysitting his grandkids. He's not doing his job," Schifrin said of Rhodes, also a radio disc jockey.

Schifrin contends his house is so special that it can't be compared to others in his area. Valuations largely are based on comparable sales in the area.

"This, sir, is a unique building," Schfrin said. "Don't give me that phoney-baloney, 'comparable' bull(expletive).

"My backyard is in the front and my front yard is in the back."

Schifrin was particularly upset after he requested an auditor employee physically visit his home for the re-evaluation. The employee showed up and looked around, but, Schifrin said, didn't do his job.

"They might as well have driven by at 40 miles per hour," Schifrin said, noting his valuation dind't change after the visit.

"All I got was a 'go-(expletive)-yourself letter' from the auditor," Schifrin said.

Now, Schifrin ranks Rhodes alongside U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Miami Township, as a top target in the Whistleblower .

He also suggested his attorney, local political activist Chris Finney, would be busy working on a surprise for Rhodes.

"We're going to sue him. He defamed me in front of a crowd," Schifrin said.

The whistleblower is so significantly less entertaining and informative these days. It is a real shame. The relentless attacks on Jean Schmidt (who this blogger doesn't like, either) have just gotten stale and old. It's just not funny to read anymore. The venom has gone beyond scathing satire and into mean personal attacks. The Whistleblower used to come just up to that line and not cross it--which was the brilliance of the publication.

This rift with Dusty is cheap and tawdry and Schifrin is using his 15 minutes of fame for a personal vendetta. It's disappointing.

For many years, the 'blower was a GREAT publication full of inside gossip, good scoop, and a biting sarcastic and often hilarious commentary. It has declined.

Schifrin oughta get back to the way it used to be and get his personal issues out of the way.

The Whistleblower is as good as ever. It doesn't just put every other blog in the area to shame, but it even provides better political coverage than the professional news media. And to top it off, it's hilarious.

The Blower puts all local political reporting to shame, and he has done so for years. He saw defeat for the Republican hand-picked candidates in the 2000 primaries for state rep. While State Adams and Tawanna Keels Simons were measuring for drapes, Tom Brinkman and Jim Raussen were cleaning their clocks.

Ever since, he's been dead on.

Dusty, however, has been in office too long. Like many conservatives, he has become too complacent and addicted to government spending.

I think all Dusty has to say to Schifrin is blower me !

Schifrin has been outted more than once. How does it feel to get a taste of your own medicine ?

Truth is an excellent defense !

Schifrin lawsuit will be as effective as that lawsuit he encouraged the wrong wing party nuts to file against that website:

Republican Truth

Rant, Rant, Rant !

Schifrin obviously felt his home was special or he would not have purchased. The layout must go with his personality as he tells all to kiss my backside !

What was the comparative value of his home when he purchased it ?

Why would his comparative value be any different now ?

It may be time the wrong wing nut (Schifrin) get a life and start reporting instead of being so self centered ?

The 'Blower jumped the shark when it became the unofficial media mouthpiece of the BobBots. Conventional wisdom says that you can only make the same unfunny jokes so many times, but The Whistleblower continues its childish campaigns against Rhodes and Schmidt.

The Whistleblower had his day many years ago. Today its the same attacks day after day. Most of the time it gets blocked by our corporate trash blockers. There are a lot better blogs to read.

Blower does get at lot of scoops with it's network, but, it is all about Schifrin and his personal vengeance !

He gets great news and then doesn't report it, so, he is no different than the rag he assaults !

What about all those unlawful, deceiving and misleading judicial candidate advertisements that the wrong wing party misleader, Vincent, signed off on and the local wing nuts paid for? One would think somebody the wrong wing nominates to the county board of election would at least know the election laws ? After all isn't the misleader, Vincent, a Lie-yer ?

Those ran in the local fishwrap, didn't they Kane !

Where is that story, Kane ?

You sure reported on the lawsuit the wrong wing nuts brought to suppress your right to free speech !

I used to enjoy the Whistleblower, but ever since he became a Carpetbagging Bob McEwen surrogate (at the behest of the excellent Tom Brinkman), he's gone downhill. Jim has actually gotten to the point where he is helping the Schmidt campaign with his venom (not that I'm complaining about that). It's amazing how he used to attack McEwen, but now has decided to make stuff up about Schmidt instead. Go figure.

Are you out of your mind? Dusty Rhodes runs the most efficient office in Hamilton County Government. He has cut spending in that office, cut unnecessary staff, and unlike his predecessor Joe DeCourcy, Dusty obeys the law.

The Blowhard needs to get over himself. He thinks that Dusty is going to bend over and "fix" his property assessment because he's a friend?! Dusty Rhodes has too much integrity for that. I may not like the guy's views on a lot of issues, but I trust him with my money.

Who cares where his backyard is? The bottom line is that a 2,695 house on one acre in Anderson Township would sell for at least $265,000. Even if it were in miserable condition. And that means the appraisal is fair.

As for the Whistleblower itself, count me among the conservative Republicans who were once entertained. Not anymore.

I don't think he makes things up about Schmidt.

One grab of the microphone demonstrated she was full of Schmidt !

Her buddy Noe is in for a rude awakening !

It won't be long now, stay tuned !

Let me get this straight: The Whistleblower is going to sue someone for defamation?

That, my friends is comedy.

To those who whine that the Whistleblower is focusing on 1 or 2 specific individuals right now - where have you been?

In the 2000 primary the Whistleblower spent every day bashing the primary opponents of Tom Brinkman and Jim Raussen. In the 2000 General election he dogged Bob Bedinghaus daily.

In the 2004 primary he attacked Tom Brinkman's primary opponent every day. In the 2004 general election he was always dogging Kerry. In the 2005 special election primary, he threw the book at Pat DeWine. In the 2005 elections he was constantly dogging David Pepper and Smart Mouth Little Punk Chris Smitherman.

Now it's 2006 and he's having his way with Mean Jean Schmidt. With Mean Jean embarrassing herself and the district every time she opens her mouth, he has plenty of material to work with.

Those of you complaining about this - are you new to town? The Whistleblower has been dogging certain folks on a daily basis since I've lived here. You guys must be new.

Exactly,so how could anyone defame the blower !

Just like him as long as you tell the truth, it makes an excellant defense !

Just ask those local wrong wing party nuts misleaders who tried to suppress the truth !

Jim seems to be losing it. I hate Mean Jean with the best of them, but gawd its getting old every day.

We get the point! Get on with it.

Why the hell would Dem's endorse someone who was at a Republican fundraiser to introduce Steve Chabot?! Is Rhodes endorsing Chabot over Cranley?!

at 9:10 AM, March 20, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Two things:
1) The questions Schifrin raises about Rhodes, Schmidt and any other elected or publicly funded official is certainly protected and probably justified, and

2) Yes, he is stale and boring these days in his writing. Pity.
