Portune to run for state Democratic chair
The Enquirer's Kimball Perry reports this morning that Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune has entered the race for chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party.
Read Portune's letter to Ohio Democrats (in .pdf format).

I support Todd Portune for Ohio Democratic Party Chairman. Todd's letter, however, has me a little bit concerned.
Why does he limit his definition of "Ohio's Democratic foot soldiers" to "local elected trustees, village and city councilpersons, county commissioners, school board members and county auditors, recorders, sheriffs and prosecuting attorneys"?
One problem with the ODP and HCDP is this perception that there are "big" Democrats and "little" Democrats. Democratic grassroots activists are only looked upon as workers to get the candidates elected. The Party does nothing to reach out and consult the "little" Democrats on policy or candidate selection. (The GOP is far from perfect, but they do pay attention to their base. No one can deny the power of conservative activists working through the Christian Coalition, moral majority, etc.) Dems are just told to follow the leaders. This top-down approach hasn't worked.
Your example really doesn't work, Nate. The Republicans have won so many races because they rarely have renegades (Tom Brinkman aside). Most Republican candidates and office-holders fall in line. That's why the Republicans are so organized. When opportunists like you shoot your mouth off and threaten to bolt the party every time you don't get your way (remember when you flirted on your blog about running for council as a Republican) you do damage to the people who are actually out there working to get Democrats elected.
Todd is a great guy. Last time I saw him he was leaving a community meeting and when he got in his car I noticed it was the oldest looking car in the lot. I thought that he has obiously sacrificed for his community and I will support a man like that!
