Under fire, Schmidt will swear in Ghiz

U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt has been trying to keep a somewhat low profile after her remarks on the floor of the house caused a national uproar last week.

But next Thursday, she'll make an appearance in Cincinnati City Council chambers, where they have a word for the kind of ruckus that happened in Congress last week. They call it "Wednesday."

Schmidt will swear in Councilwoman-elect Leslie Ghiz, a Hyde Park Republican who said she considers Schmidt a political mentor.

"I'm sure I'’m going to catch 10 kinds of hell, but since when have I started worrying about that?" Ghiz said. "She's a good person. She's a female Republican. We have to support each other."

Schmidt might need that support if there's a Republican primary for her congressional seat next year. The night of her election victory, former U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen-- one of Schmidt's opponents in a special primary in June -- showed up uninvited at Ghiz's victory party at Andy's Mediterranean Grille in Walnut Hills.

That's a move that can only be interpreted as laying the groundwork for another 2nd district congressional run, said former GOP Vice Chairman Charles H. "Chip" Gerhardt III.

I believe that Jean Schmidt is Leslie Ghiz's REAL mother.

When everything is said and done, people are really going to regret voting for Ghiz. She's an idiot.

Jean Schmidt's lack of knowledge of house rules regarding referring to other House members by name, her admitted lack of knowledge of John Murtha's military record, and her purposeful false portrayal of Murtha's plan to begin with is indicative of the arrogance, incompetence, and the viciousness with with which the Republican party now operates and serves as yet another reminder why this voter left the party.

I guess we cant make comments about the fact that Jean Schmidt looks like Leslie Ghiz will in about 10 years with that wrinkled leather skin. That may insult someone. Although it is true that Bush manipulated the "intelligence" and she knows it and she insulted a veteran, she is still a sacred cow. I see where the enquirer is going with this. Okay, I will get on board. Jean you are absolutely right. The reason troops are being killed in Iraq is because those damn democrats want the Bush administration to bring them home. How dare a democrat suggest that American troops get out of harms way. DAMN COMMUNISTS!

"The War is not a quagmire, and we ARE winning. It's offensive to us when you Liberals think we don't know you're lying to us."

How are we winning?

There is no exit strategy or real goals to measure our succes. That makes it a quagmire.

Her fighting spirit is apologizing and back peddling.

Bush lied us into this war. No WMD's, and no connection to 9/11.

She attacked the messenger because Bush's numbers are at an all time low.

The chickenhawks can only attack real war hero's for so long, and still get away with it.

I don't know how things work in Ohio but I believe a soldier stationed here in Florida has a much better chance of surviving to old age than one in Iraq. Bush is the one who wants to keep the troops in Iraq 'for as long as it takes', remember. How many people have to be blown up each day before it becomes a quaqmire anyway.

Viewing this story from Nebraska, it appears Ms. Schmidt is way out of her league. Open mouth, insert foot.

leslie doesn't backdown to political pressure and is true to herself.

she stood up to the local GOP about her beliefs on womens' rights, despite knowing it would cost her a council appointment (pat dewine's seat).

and she's not about to bail on jean schmidt & being sworn in by the ohio rep.

council can use a solid person like leslie.

"the shrink"

I hate to say I told y'all so - leslie ghiz is an idiot.

Hey "shrink"- A history lesson for you-Ghiz was at one point pro-choice but decided to become pro-life to get GOP backing- so much for your belief that she "stood up for women's rights"- the right to choose is a pretty damn important right for women.

Representative Schmidt just can't seem to help herself. In total disregard of her pledge of civility she attacked in her speech. This was in complete violation of House rules. She knew exactly what she was doing, she was only surprised when she did not get the standing ovation from the more senior Republicans as she was expecting.
Her apology and her explanation also ring hollow. She wants to be the victim of some vast left-wing liberal conspiracy and she is hurt by the words that have been directed towards her. Is she just now learning that words have meaning? And, of all the people that were upset, all of them were liberals? Isn't civility a trait that goes across political boundaries? Maybe not, if Congresswoman Schmidt believes that all those that objected to her attack were liberals. Even in her explanation and apology, Rep. Schmidt is unable to refrain from name calling.
I understand the effect of going to a funeral of a fallen soldier. That soldier, like all that have served before, after and in the future risk their life so each person can have the freedom to express their opinion. What she did was reprehensible, wrapping herself in a cloak of patriotism and attacking others of differing views as "cowards" and considering the denial of her source, she continues to express her belief she was just the messenger. I am a disabled vet who opposed the war before it happened and have expressed doubts all along. I have to assume from the inference that I too am a coward in her view.
Patriotism is stolid, thoughtful, meek. Nationalism is rabid, emotional and strident. Maybe Congresswoman Schmidt needs to contemplate this before she stands before Congress again.

Schmidt is pathetic. She is a Taft clone and a rubber stamp for whoever is in charge. Look at her record and you'll be forced to agree.

She has no ideas of her own.

She's as guilty as Bob Taft of ethics violations - unreported Bengals tickets/unreported golf outings = same thing.

She has zero tact.

She has zero "fighting spirit." If she did, she wouldn't have requested her words be stricken, she merely would have amended them to reflect her true intent...

She's lame, unpopular, and likely won't be our Representative come next May.

Here's hoping.

Will some genius please tell me the difference between Bob Taft's actions for which is is now a convicted criminal, and those of Jean Schmidt?

I see no difference. Schmidt is a Columbus Republican - and if she's not defeated in May, she'll be the poster child for the Democrats come November.

It's time to rid ourselves of this woman and those she associates with.

Apparently neither bush nor schmidt know who attacked the U.S. on 9/11.Invasion of Iraq was an excuse for cowardly politicians, who couldn't serve due to lack of backbones. No weapons of mass destruction and no smoking gun. Maybe bush and schmidt should ask cheney, the puppetmaster in this administration.

I'm a Democrat that voted for Leslie. I wish I could have my vote back. Looks like Ghiz will be another Smitherman type. Say anything to get elected and then do whateever they want. Hopefully she will be a one-termer too.
