NAACP will fight red light cameras

Jessica Brown has the story here

Updated: Here is Chris Smitherman's statement, emailed out today:

NAACP Membership voted last night, Thursday, December 27, 2007, to oppose the City Council's decision to install cameras at intersections.

City Council is attempting to increase revenue by photographing cars and mailing tickets to car owners. The Cincinnati NAACP will collaborate with other organizations to collect the signatures needed for a charter amendment.

The organizations involved will need to collect less than 9,000 valid signatures to get this issue on the November 2008 ballot. The Cincinnati Branch is confident that we will reach the threshold needed to place the issue on the ballot. In light of this information, the Cincinnati Branch of the NAACP encourages Council not to begin the purchase of equipment knowing that the public is engaging in the democratic process to put "Red Light Cameras" on the ballot for a yes or no vote.

These cameras represent the governments continued desire to have "Big Brother" watching citizens every move. City Council is attempting to balance the city budget with revenue from the "Red Light Cameras." However, it is yet another invasion of our civil rights and civil liberties.

Smitherman stated, " The Cincinnati NAACP Branch is not driven by political parties. The local branch is no longer a 'whipping boy' for any political party. We simply evaluate public policy and ask the question, 'What is in the best interest of the African-American community?'"

Luken vetoes them, Mallory says he doesn't like them (or something) and now Smitherman.

Strange bedfellows.

But watch Mallory...I promise he will NOT take a position. Never does.

Doesn't the NAACP have a real concern to worry about? Or maybe it is out of reasons to exist. Good Bye.

Typical wRong wingnut whacko, PERIOD--God bless Smitherman !

There is no privacy anymore. We at Bold Endeavors support all Gay Rights to privacy !

Certainly, if one is walking down the street, there is a right of privacy regarding trolling and giving eye-to-eye contact?

If an individual were behind following you, would that not be trolling. We at Bold Endeavors and Gay Rights agree ?

Now, that individual can sit miles away and follow you with joy sticks of various sizes!

Cameras are designed to see our Gay activities in action. After all, you may be a under cover cop with a hidden badge !

Leave it to the conservatives(gop) Grand Old Pedophiles to accuse Bold Enbdeavors and it's Gay friends of sitting around foot-tapping all day with their hands on their joy-sticks and lashing the whip-and-chain by foley-fondling and hoping to make you drop your pants and bend you over the barrel or vise versa!

Your position reminds us of the individuals that say: I don't care if I'm stopped and searched !

PATHETIC 'Gay Rights for all' !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2008 !

Maybe the NAACP has finally waked up to your progressive Dhimmicrat divisive lies, and smell liberty with conservatives??

I guess, the reasoning is---Only African Americans drive through red lights while others stop.

i thought the cameras only took pictures when a sensor (radar?) actually determined something had happened. so the notion of constant monitoring is slightly flawed.

Red light cameras, as every regulation, no matter how small is enforced at the point of the gun. Every ticket requires a fine, which can result in handcuffing and jailing and even killing those who fail to fork over. Hidden behind each mandate is an armed tough in jackboots and a bulletproof vest who is prepared to beat and kill to serve the state and its laws.

As legislation extends, so does the coercive arm of the state, its police powers, its jails, and its reach over society. It is like a poisonous fog that descends and grows more by the day, seeping into every nook and cranny of life: schools, businesses, homes, churches. Nowhere is exempt. The sound of the jailer's key rattling grows louder and more ear-piercing. The culture of the jail, where people are treated worse than animals, proliferates. You can't move without risking life or limb.

Christopher Smithernman and Naacp understand, clearly, that freedom needs to be protected, that a sales tax to build a jail was tantamount to buying the chains of our own slavery. We live in a society where nothing takes place outside the purview of the state, which is to say we will always live one step away from the prison cell. One or two wrong moves and you lose it all. All of society is not yet a jail such as you find in totalitarian societies or a society under occupation due to military conquest, but with every expansion of the state, the jailers get that much more power over all of us.

Don’t think that’s so? Ask Ron Brown, or Clyde Bennett.

Christopher Finney and Christopher Smitherman are working for everyone’s Freedoms, where can I sign this petition?

Let's say your notion is correct. What if you are not behind the wheel and the driver of your car runs a red-light. The citation is going to be issued to you just as a parking ticket would be if someone fails to feed the meter.
I parking ticket is not a moving violation. A red light ticket is. you will have points on your record as well as an increase in insurance premiums.

The notion that this hardware could not be used for constent monitoring is VERY flawed.

Everything Smitherman does would offend me if I were black. What is the correlation of traffic law and people of color? In theory, none, but people like Smitherman like to keep the racial rift in tact so he can continue the NAACP's self-victimization. God forbid there be racial equality-- then he would be out of a job!

uh, Mr Great Dapper, red light cameras are not a regulation - stopping for the light is a regulation.
You give liberty a bad name.

SMitherman stokes elected officials for not having inclusive hiring practices for African Americans - but what does the NAACP do? They work with rich, white, males LOLOLOL

Can't they find a single, qualified, intelligient black person in all of the city who will work with them?

What does this say about the NAACP and THEIR agenda? IS it about promoting the African AMerican community or just one member of the community?

Which election are you going to run in that you are using the reputation of the NAACP to promote?

Like it isn't obvious - only politics could create these strange bedfellows.

Wake up membership - if they black professional community won't support it - it isn't worth it when the price is promoting an organization like COAST

Smitherman crawling into bed with the COAST boys. This is the best comedy ever! And over red light cameras, no less. How the black community can support Smitherman & his NAACS sideshow is beyond me. This guy is a total embarrasment.

Don’t think that’s so? Ask Ron Brown, or Clyde Bennett.

You can forget about Clyde. He scored himself a real bargain. I didn't score that big at the after Christmas sales! 2 years in the Big House & a paltry $4,000 fine. A super bargain for playing treasurer for the boyz. But that racist crook will never practice law ever again. He'll be back where he started - unloading the trucks at the Kroger dock in Dayton. Justice is served.
