First filer for commission race

Anti jail tax advocate Ed Rothenberg Thursday became the first person to file petitions for a Hamilton County Commission seat.

Rothenberg, a Republican and Hyde Park realtor, turned in 90 signatures to the Hamilton County Board of Elections Thursday afternoon.

Candidates need 50 valid signatures to get on the March 4 primary election ballot. The filing deadline is Jan. 4.

Rothenberg intends to run against Democratic Commission President Todd Portune, who, along with fellow Democratic commissioner David Pepper tried to raise the sales tax without putting it on the ballot. Rothenberg and others were involved in efforts to forced the increase on the ballot and campaign for its defeat Nov. 6.

Among the items on Rothenberg's platform: he wants to change the law, making it illegal for county government to raise taxes without putting it on the ballot.

"I was so mad that they had the nerve to do it. But it's legal," he said.

The Board of Elections says Greg Harris has also taken out petitions to run against Republican Commissioner Pat DeWine but has only turned in a few so far. Harris has unsuccessfully run twice for Congress and once for Cincinnati City Council.

Harris isn't so different from Qualls and Chabot, who weren't really known when they started out and who both didn't get elected to Council until their third runs. They both also lost congressional races (Chabot lost his first race for congress against Luken). Governor Strickland lost at least four elections. Many politicians ran and lost several times before they won--especially those who don't have famous last names or lots of wealth. I think Harris will eventually win, and once he wins, he will enjoy a pretty entrenched base of support that he earned over several years. It's harder for candidates like Harris to break in, but once they do, they (like Chabot, Qualls, etc.) have pretty passionate followings.

What hasn't Harris run for?

Ed Rothenberg is dreaming if he thinks he can change the law. If he actually could win, once reality sets in, he will see it cannot be done. I know this because I have been working for politicians nearly 30 years. Once they are in office, they are all basically the same. It does not matter what party they claim as their own.

Mr. Rothenberg is soft spoken honest man, I know him to lend assistance to his fellow man, a man of his word that will do what he says. I have also had dealings with Todd Portune, helped him get elected, installed hundreds of yard signs. On election day, from sun up till sundown, darted all over Anderson Township, traveled to whatever polling location his campaign headquarters believed I would be most effective at hawking and passing out literature.

Todd Portune has shown his idea of county government is an arrangement Plato referred to as oligarchy, Plato distilled the concept into two sentences “When wealth and the wealthy are valued in the city, virtue and good men are less valued. What is valued is practiced, what is not valued is not practiced” If there is a more concise summing-up of our current majority county commissions political and cultural circumstance, I have yet come across it.

Ed Rothenberg very well might be a dreamer, however, his dreams inspire hope, Portunes weasel words are hopeless, his actions have shown he views county government as a small group exercising control for corrupt and selfish purposes.

Ed Rothenberg will get my vote.

What Mr. Dapper does not understand is the historical perspective of someone like myself. I WORKED for three decades for the politicians in their offices. They are all the same once they get in. Ed Rothenberg will be no different. My vote goes to "None of the Above". Just once I wish that candidate would win so that the idiots that get elected would get the message.

To "the great stephen dapper",
Interesting commentary.

Not involved in politics, but I thought quixotic Portune gave hope when in the minority.

I was/am flabbergasted to see how power changed him.

Guess I'm naive. Rothenberg will be different?

I'm gonna vote for that Nate Livingston. He made sure those gentrifiers didn't put and end to City Link.

As usual Rothenburg shows his ignorance. County Commissioners have no power to make laws. The law he refers to would require an act of the Ohio legislature. And unlike Hamilton County, other counties around the state operate that way routinely. Its only here where Republican cowards put everything on the ballot that people got used to it.

Dapper Dan - What a crock! Every single one of Rothenberg's efforts have a link to his own personal fortunes in the real estate business. He promotes his business interests and uses others' real concerns to advance his bottom line.
If he exercised any position, ever, in any of his political races or movements that weren't self-promoting --- I can't find it.
This race will be simply about the "average joe" verses the "elitist" -- and all that implies.

Ed Rothenberg is trying to inject direct demarcracy into this situation which will NOT work. This is a representive system where politicians are given leeway in regards to taxpayer's money. You have to spend money to aquire something or nothing will be gain.

I agree with Dapper on the article above (and well written). And I also support Rothenburg. I even like Rothlesberger of the Steelers. Go figure...Maybe today I like everybody.

The Party convinced Harris with polling to take on this race. Harris wanted to run for Council again in 09.
