Legislative Black Caucus backs Sykes

The pending Ohio Senate confirmation of Barbara Sykes as chairwoman of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission is in limbo because of the commission's proposed rule change to secure 12 weeks of unpaid materity leave for employees of small companies.

It isn't the rule itself that rubs state legislators and Gov. Ted Strickland wrong. It's the speed in which the commission pushed for the change, according to Strickland's spokesman, Keith Dailey, and members of a joint legislative committee reviewing the proposed rule.

Strickland, who appointed Sykes to the Civil Rights Commission, said he's disappointed in the way the former legislator has handled the proposed rule change.

"The governor is disappointed and is likely to remain disappointed," Dailey said, referring to what Strickland "saw as an unwillingness to honor a reasonable request to delay the rules. . .to answer unanswered questions."

Wednesday, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement supporting Sykes, and said it is sending letters voicing its concerns to Strickland and leaders of the Ohio General Assembly.

The Legislative Black Caucus, comprised of 17 African-American House and Senate members, said it thinks any move to remove Sykes as chairwoman because of disagreement over its implementation would be both "unnecessary and provocative."

State Rep. Tyrone K. Yates said, "We understand that the governor and others requested a delay in the implementation of the pregnancy leave rule but the decision by OCRC to move ahead after prior public hearings and public notice should be respected and supported."

The black caucus said the pregnancy leave proposal has been in front of the Civil Rights Commission for many months and small business and other interested parties had opportunity to review and provide their opinions.

"OLBC unequivocally believes in the ability of Chairwoman Barbara Sykes and OCRC to fulfill its responsibility to Ohio citizens while still respecting the concerns of state leaders," said Yates, a Democrat from Evanston/East Walnut Hills and caucus president.

Sykes is immediate past president of the Legislative Black Caucus who lost last year's race for Ohio Auditor.

The Ohio Legislative Black Caucus was founded in 1967. Its mission is to recognize and address the hopes, aspirations and needs of African Americans and other citizens in Ohio through public policy development and advocacy.

This is the problem with the Democratic Party - there is no loyalty to each other and once in power, they are every man for himself - or herself.

The maternity leave rule has serious implications for small business owners compared to the general public.

My question would be - did Sykes provide adequate notice to the small business community and its associations about this rule so that their opportunity to be informed and heard on the issue was given true notice?

If he reached out to them - and they didn't respond, then too bad for them. If she didn't reach out to the community bearing a significant burden on this rule, then she didn't do her job.

Go Governor Strcikland! We stand behind you 100% as you try to fix in 4 years what the Repugs ruined in 16.

The right-wing media won't connect the dots, but the shooter in Omaha was in foster care and definitely in need of more help. But no, the Repugs running that state tried to save a few bucks and kicked him out and put him on the streets. The death toll from Repug policies just jumped anohter 9.

That is a drop in the bucket compared to the Americans and Iraqis killed in the Repug invasion of that country. Or even the number of Americans killed in this country while the Repugs get rich off the NRA and gun manufacturers, or the number of Americans killed due to the Rpeug policy of putting profits ahead of people.

November 2008 cannot come soon enough. Then we can elect people who will be charged with the Herculean task of trying to rebuild this once-great, once-free country.

Hopefully, the Dems elected in 2008 will have the brains to restore the US Constitution AFTER they court-martial and warrantlessly wiretap the Repugs to give them a taste of their own medicine.

Huh? The shooter was 19 years old..last time I looked that ment he was an emancipated adult. Besides, he was living with his girlfreind's family, and all that ridlin that the NEA in conjunction with "big pharmcuticals", shoved down his throat had nothing to do with it.

Yeah, like the Republican administration of 1860 and there Demoncratic pro-slave opposition.

Tyrone Yates is a complete and utter fool. Thank God that old "Tirade" is no longer on Cincinnati city council. He can't do any harm in Columbus as part of the democRAT minority.

We as a country, as a world, and as a human race are facing some very critical times in our existence. The issues at hand seem to be so overwhelming at times that I believe many of us have lost all hope in the future. We might not honestly admit this, but I believe it is plainly seen in our, “Right Now Society”. We are involved in very visible wars, like Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and no matter what anyone tells us there seems to be no hope of complete victory. There are wars going on that we don’t consider as much, like wars on drugs, poverty, immigration, and global warming that also seem to have no conclusion in sight. Every time elections come around I hear all sorts of empty promises that are never attempted let alone carried out. For 28 years of my short life I continue to hear how things will get better only to sit back seemingly helpless, and watch them get worse. I’ve researched the candidates like I never have before. Maybe its because I have a daughter on the way and am finally realizing our decisions today will affect many generations to come. To be honest I hear an abundance of wonderful ideas from all the candidates. So I have to ask myself and challenge all Americans out there, regardless of race religion, creed, or sex to ask themselves the same question. Who Is Telling The TRUTH? I’m not sure if many of us really know what that word means anymore. I also ask “ We The People” to think long and hard about the role we want government to play not only in our own lives , but so much more important in our children and our grandchildren’s lives. Do we really want freedom and liberty for them? If you will, take time to look up these two words and the word truth in Webster’s dictionary. For the first time in my short voting career I feel I will be voting for a man of integrity, a thing not found in Washington these days. A man that listens to “ We The People.” Dr. Ron Paul Will receive my vote for the primary and presidential election. I will dedicate my vote to my unborn daughter Eliana Grace and, to all he brave soldiers who gave their lives for our right to vote and be free from the Great Britain government.
