Council: Thanks, Nuxhall

Mayor Mark Mallory's office announced Friday afternoon that City Council will pass at its next meeting a resolution honoring Joe Nuxhall's contributions to Cincinnati and Major League Baseball.

From the mayor's statement:

“Like most of us in Cincinnati, I grew up listening to Joe Nuxhall call Reds games. He is a part of the fabric of our community. Baseball is a big tradition in this town and Joe Nuxhall is a big part of that tradition. He will be truly missed.”

Council takes Wednesday off, but meets again Nov. 28.

It took me a little while today, after the initial deep sigh, to figure out why Nuxall's death was felt so deeply. It dawned on me as the memories arose throughout the day, while I'm not really a baseball fan, I remember my father and grandparents watching the game on TV but turning on the radio and hearing the play-by-play with Joe. I remember sitting with a roster book and trying to mark down all the strikes and balls and basehits (I don't know why I was doing that) But it dawned on me, Nuxall's death, reminded me of some of the best moments and cherished people in my life and I grieved for the loss of those moments, those persons, and one of the characters who tossed the memories over the plate and into my heart with such a comforting, hometown tone that makes baseball the hallmark of so many families. What a blessing. Thanks for the memories, Joe.

Joe's passing caught me (and a lot of people) by surprise. He had many health concerns and hospital visits over the last dozen years or so and Joe seemed to always come thru AOK. This time it was not to be. City Council, please remember Joe in more ways than just a routine mention of his passing. Name a room, wing, hallway, or something at City Hall after him. Joe was more than baseball in Cincinnati. Joe was a Cincinnati ambassador...
