Cincy Dems: Trouble in Paradise?

Tim Burke is apparently a worried man; and worried men sing worried songs.

And write worried letters.

The Hamilton County Democratic Party chairman fired off a letter to Cincinnati Democratic leaders Thursday saying that, with the election only five days away, "maintaining a Democratic majority on Cincinnati City Council is very much in jeopardy."

"If we lose it,'' Burke writes, "it will be because Charlie Winburn returns to council."

It's not really clear what good having a majority of Democrats on council has done for the local party, given the fact that the five Democrats rarely hang together and it was a tri-partisan coalition - the "Fiscal Five" - which has often called the shots at City Hall.

But any majority is better than no majority. And Burke says that if the Democrats lose it, it will be because three of the Democratic incumbents - Jeff Berding, Laketa Cole and Cecil Thomas have some serious problems to deal with.

Berding, apparently, is at the top of the "vulnerable" list. "I would be less than frank if I did not acknowledge that Jeff Berding draws the most criticism from our own Democrats,'' Burke writes. "Some positions that he has taken over the past two years have not been well-received, but the fact of the matter is that Jeff has been a loyal Democrat."

Cole's recent domestic troubles should not be allowed to hurt her re-election chances, Burke said. Cole was attacked by her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend and asked police to keep her name out of the report. The council member said that police had suggested to her that she could be listed on the report as "Jane Doe."

Thomas may be vulnerable, Burke writes, "because of his quiet style of getting the job done." Thomas, frustrated that he is not getting credit for his work to reduce crime in the city, is running a TV ad that runs against the tide in a council election where it seems everyone else is running for sheriff - Thomas argues that crime is down; and that he had a lot to do with it.

The good news, Burke writes is that the other Democratic incumbents - David Crowley and John Cranley - are going to be re-elected with no problem.

But two seats, on a nine-member council, does not a majority make.

What good has the Democrat led city council done over the past years? It is time for a change! I hope the voters realize that.

When a citizen contacts a council member and rarely if ever gets any response back to a city governmental issue of concern, would you vote for that person?

I am a Democrat and I don't want to be associated with Berding and Cole. In fact, i'm embarrassed that my party has embraced these two clowns.

Berding is a Democrat by title only and Cole is just not fit to be a member of council.

I hope other true Democrats feel like me and cast votes for people who will do what's right and good for our city.

Don't worry about a majority or what Burke has to say.

Mr Burke obviously cares more about political parties than the city of Cincinnati. I have been impressed with how our city has elected a council that for the most part has put partisanship aside and worked for the betterment of our city, not for the betterment of their political party. What Mr Burke and the democratic stronghold that he represents has failed to realize is that people in this city are going to elect the council that they feel will best clean up crime and wisely spend their tax dollars. The party affiliation is no longer as important as it once was, and I think we're better off as a result.

We have had a Democrat majority led city council for some time now. Look at downtown Cincinnati. It is empty and crime is rampant. How long did it take to get the Banks deal done. They have drug their feet for so long and that cost us many new businesses to go to Newport. It is time for a change or downtown Cincinnati will be a ghost town! Time to rid our council of those who are holding Cincinnati back and bring in people who will work to advance the city and make it a place people want to live, work and spend their time and hard earned money!

Regardless of political party affiliation, the Cincinnati City Counsel has chronically over the last 15+ years been ineffective at everything other than in-house fighting.

Unfortunately, Cincinnati City Counsel, as with every other elected position out there [Congress-people, Senators, Govenors, State Reps, and the list goes on and on...] have forgotten that they were elected "BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE". It seems, like once they lift that right hand off the Bible, they start acting in their own best interests, not those of their constituents that elected them.

Democrat, Republican, Charterite [what the heck is this anyway?], Independent... none on City Council are doing the job the Cincinnati people want. I wish we could un-elect them all.

Good riddance.

I don't understand why you say LAketa COle is unfit for council. Shouldn't council be a microcosm of the population they represent? If this is the case, then Ms. COle represents black on black crime.

I cannot believe that Tim Burke is afraid of any Repugnicant winning anything in Cincinnati this year, or pretty much during what remains of his lifetime.

Cincinnati has been trending Democrat for quite some time. Being that he is the chairman of the party, you might think he would have noticed. Burke, for instance, has his choice of County Commissioners to call on now, whereas just 7 short years ago, he had ZERO.

Does Bush realize how badly Bush, Blackwell, Chabot and all the other disgusting examples of human waste otherwise known as Repugnicant Politicians have been getting defeated in Cincinnati?

Doesn't he realize that the voters have finally gotten wise to the "Jesus Wants You to Vote Republican" claptrap that the So-Called Moral Majority spewed for 30 years? Doesn't he realize that working-class voters have finally figured out that Repugs who claim to "share your values" really want to "steal your job" so their rich buddies can make more money? And, oh, how does that "share your values" thing work anyway, when all the Repugs are out there trying to pick up pages, dress up as women, wear diapers, steal from the government, and try to pick up men in a bathroom? Whose "values" are those? Oh, yeah, they are the values that the Repugs and their willing accplices in the corporate media manipulated everyone into thinking Democrats held for the past 30 years!

Give me an F-ng break! There is a blue tide washing over Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, and the U.S. of A.

If Tim Burke can't see that, he needs to step down immediately.

Question to the many trite anonymous posters, have you actually been to the city lately? Who honestly call Cincinnati a "dead" city who has actually lived in the city? Who can claim crime is rising when it is not?

The hateful negative attitude people like the aforementioned anonymous is the real problem we face here. Get positive, even with your criticism, or just get out and don't look back. If you hate living here, then to be frank, we don't want you around.

LaKeta's antics are just down-right trashy. Burke and the Democratic Party should have had the sense to rescind its endorsement of this classless individual.

In fact, Burke should step down as chair of the Democratic Party.

Here we go again. Forget about what is good for the city. Do only what is good for the party. If the good of both the city and the party happen to be the same, that is fine. Just remember, if there is a conflict, the party comes first. That appears to go for both Democrats and Republicans.

You need a Mayor Daley type(Chicago). Someone who isn't afraid to clean up downtown at the risk of being called a racist or overbearing. Otherwise we will sit through decades more of wishy washy decision making on the major issues/projects and just plain dumb decisions. Its not about political parties, its about courage and making the best decision for the city. Charlie Luken was a coward and thats why we are in the situation we are today.

No, Cincinnati's downtown is not dead like Detroit.

It's dead like Dayton.

You libs should entertain us by listing all the positive accomplishments of the dem-lead Cincy city council, especially this decade!

The death of downtown began with the Republicans in the late 60's. They bulldozed everything from 3rd Street down and built a disposable stadium that was obsolete after only 15-20 years. They also installed a string of highway to separate the city from its roots - the river. Then they sanitized downtown by building office buildings and nothing else. By the late 70's retail was leaving downtown in droves. Credit the Democrats for turning the tide. They didn't create this mess, which is costing over a billion dollars to fix. If you want to point fingers, start at Eugene Ruehlman, then go down the chain...

The city is growing for the first time since the 1950's and it's being done with the Democrats in office. The Dems weren't the ones who sterilized downtown, but they ARE the ones underwhich life is being brought back with a growing residential population and more entertainment variety.

If Tim Burke wants to keep a Democratic majority on council, how about giving voters decent Democratic choices? At the endorsement meeting of the CDC it was clear that there was a strong showing of precinct executives that had doubts about Berding and his "fiscal five," but Berding's opposition was marginalized by last minute appointments of pro-Berding Dems to precinct executive positions. I am a Democrat, and a precinct executive, but I will not be voting for a majority of Democrats for council this year for the first time in my life. There are some great independent candidates, a few good Dems, and two great Charterites.

Newsflash: The City of Cincinnati is growing. Boring, turd communities like Cheviot and Deer Park are shrinking. For the first time in decades we see hope that downtown isn't just a place for Carl Lindner to park his Bentley while he's up in his office buying off politicians who support his cause to drive anyone whose not white fundamentalist Christian out of the city. Republicans act like they haven't had a hand in the city's decline. Hell, they're responsible for it. The Dems have spent the last decade trying to pick up the pieces, even as Phil Heimlich tried to screw it up and pretend he knew what he was doing.

Anon 12:41, you are the reason why the system is so bad. You generalize and denounce an entire party and group of Americans solely on their beliefs.

Your comments really show your ignorance and low level of intelligence. I hate to break it to you but the real world does not opperate through Air America, Randy Rhodes glases. For that matter it does not opperate through Ann Coulter/ Bill O'Reilley colored glasses either.

When I see comments like this, one has proof that the two party system is a sham. Two groups jockeying for power and money. In the end it is the American people that get left out.

Anon, next time trying to look at a candidate based upon something substantial, not just a little R, D, or I next to the name.

Anon 2:49,

12:41 is right, though he may have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to the Dems.

You cannot deny that under GOP rule, the country has endured record deficits, record manufacturing job losses, a poorly planned and costly war, loss of prestige around the globe, record foreclosures, unprecdented number of GOP politicians have been arrested indicted and imprisoned for corruption and crimes against children, our soldiers are violating the Geneva convention left and right with the full support of the highest levels of government, record gas prices with record oil company profits, and the President has shredded the Constitution with untold civil liberties violations against U.S. citizens. Meanwhile, we are being overrun with illegal immigrants and the environment is getting worse with each breath we take.

Oh yeah, things are going well for the super-wealthy, between the Bush tax cuts and the rising stock market. Other than that, the GOP has turned the United States of America into a corrupt Third World banana republic.

If Ronald Reagan were alive today and someone handed him the current data on the U.S., he would either invade it or ask the CIA to depose its leader.

It's true that there isn't a "Republican way" to fix a pothole or take care of a park. Nor is there a Democratic way.

However, each and every individual who is running under the GOP banner is aware that the President of the United States who has nearly destroyed our country is a Republican, the Republicans controlled Ohio for the past 16 years and nearly ruined the state, and the Republicans ran Hamilton County into the ground while plundering public resources at every level.

Every single one of them could have sought the Charter nod, the Democratic nod, or ran as an independent. Instead, they drove themselves to 700 Walnut Street, took the elevator to the third floor, said hello to Debbie Flammer, and groveled before the Republican inner circle, taking a series of affirmative measures to earn their support. They chose to associate themselves with the likes of Bush, Cheney, Taft, Blackwell, Ney, Noe, Mark Foley, and all the other disgusting life forms who lead that very organization.

That is reason enough to not vote for a single one of them.

Tim Burke and his employment of lies, subtefudge, deception and demagoguery is the parmount reason why the Democrates will lose on November 6, 2007. In addition, not since the racist he likes of George Wallace and Lester Maddox have we experienced a racist of the dangerous and diabolically dimensions as Tim Burke. Tim Burke your 'poison' endeavor to invite the Afro-American community to reduce ourselves to choose between the two choices in his "racist devil's" scheme of viewing ourselves as democrates first and a proud, valued ethnic group of people with high class and profound sense of culture is a toweringly racist insult to All
African-Americans in Cincinnati, Ohio.Telling African-Americans that Charles Winburn and Sam Malone are not "black" democrates, but are "black" republicans is the apex of racism. In amplification of this point, Tim Burke, would not dare tell white democrates not to vote for white republicans! Tim Burke is a white, male liberal who thinks that he is still on the planation, he is the master and Blacks are his slaves without the "freedom" of mind, thought and independent choices. The great philosopher, Camus, wrote that"A slave stops being a slave when he says 'no' to the master". We are "free" Tim Burke and we are a "free" people in America with the power of "free" choice and African-
Americans won't allow you to enslave us, again, by surrendering to our racist schemes. The democrates will lose because of your bankrupt, racist leadership as head of the democratic party. Your dealing from the bottom of the "race card deck" is your last act of desperation as a racist leader in politics in this city. The "greatness" of any ethnic group in America is their expressions of freedom. Mark Twain wrote,"Truly great people allow others to be great". Clearly you are not great, but you have defined yourself as a 'racist snake'.

The mailing was NOT race baiting. I volunteered for the Dem Party last council election and I had a caller ask who the dems were. I told her and she thanked me because she was "going to vote for all of the black ones" but didn't realize that not all black candidates are dems.

True story, direct quote.

This was clarifying the affiliation of the candidates. There are african-americans out there who will vote against their interests and vote based on race.

Howard, the Fiscal Phonies never called a single shot.

They are only hype and no results. The Phonies consistently lose each one of their petty battles than go into a groupthink mantra to trick people into thinking they won. Just because they draw up letterhead and declare themselves "winners" doesn't mean they actually won.

Now, they are running on platforms that are 180 degree turns from what they did during the budget.

I'm beginning to get as much better understanding why the Democrats are having so much trouble electing a Democratic City Council these days. But I'm also understanding why Congressional District 1 and Dongressional District 2 have been so solidly Republican for what seems like forever.

As much as I know that Tim Burke would never lift a hand to help me, I think that is wrong to publicly attack him like some of you have done in this post.

Burke should resign for pushing Berding through. He was losing the Democratic endorsement until the system was rigged.

Does it matter if it's a Demcratic majority if part of that includes Berding, a Democrat In Name Only? Once the crosses over to the "fake five" he ceases to be a Democrat to me.

Jeff Berding says he’s a Democrat, and he wants the Democratic Party to endorse him in his bid for City Council, 2007. But how does Jeff Berding’s record compare to issues important to Democrats? Take our trivia quiz, and check your knowledge of Berding!

True or False

1. Jeff Berding says he supports a Democratic slate of candidates, but he has been coordinating campaign efforts with Republicans Ghiz, Eby and Charterite Bortz (a registered Republican) behind the scenes.

2. Jeff Berding says he is for raising the minimum wage, but he voted against raising the minimum wage.

3. Jeff Berding has taken money and support from Republicans and COAST members Chris Finney and Tom Brinkman.

4. Jeff Berding says he for keeping inner-city pools open, but he proposed to close nine inner-city pools.

5. Jeff Berding says he is for city health clinics, but he proposed shutting down inner-city health clinics.

6. Jeff Berding says he is for the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission (CHRC), but he proposed to close it.

7. Jeff Berding says he is for more transparency in government, but he is for city council making more decisions with tax dollars behind closed doors ("executive sessions").

8. When Jeff Berding won the endorsement of The Cincinnati Enquirer he told them that the city should continue to help fund Cincinnati public schools with programs like school nurses, then Berding proposed to end their funding.

9. Jeff Berding is for taking $50,000 from human service agencies and giving it to the Chamber of Commerce.

10. Jeff Berding alligned himself with Republican Bob Bedinghaus against Democrat Todd Portune in 2000, but told Portune that he didn’t.

11. Jeff Berding asks reporters to call him and his Republican allies on Council “the fiscal five” —a nickname given to them by right-wing columnist Peter Bronson.

Well done!

The Berding Quiz should be handed out to people before heading to the booth.

Tim Burke and the other Dems who endorsed Berding give the local party an unctuous feel to it, an don't care for it a bit.

Now many Democrats in this town are no different than Republicans, a party that has dominated the county until recently.

What a shame that the Dems of this town worry about majorities instead of getting the right people with the right character to get the job done right, both ethically and morally.
