"Taft endorsement" release a sham

The campaign opposing Issue 27, the sales tax increase to pay for a new jail and public safety programs, had a little fun today.

But some didn't think think it was so funny.

We Demand A Better Plan sent out this press release today claiming former Ohio Governor Bob Taft had endorsed Issue 27. It's not true. After reading a sentence or two into the sarcastic press release it becomes clear that the "endorsement" is a toungue-in-cheek joke. There is a disclaimer at the end of the statement too.

But supporters of Issue 27 think it's no laughing matter.

After the Hamilton County Commission meeting Wednesday morning, Commissioner Todd Portune said it ought to be illegal to misrepresent the facts in that manner.

"This is the same group that'll do anything to win an election," Portune said.

Portune said he'd heard that campaign spokesman Jason Gloyd was on 700 WLW that morning talking about the "endorsement," which made him even angrier. Gloyd says he was not on the radio, but he'd heard that some of the talk show hosts had, indeed, discussed the fake press release.

That group is a joke.

We're still waiting for their plan ...

Well Todd Portune has shown us he has no brains, now the message is he has no sense of humor. Sorry Todd but Issue 27 is a laughing matter. Anyone who seriously thinks we need to build another big jail for Simon Says is a jokester and should be laughed at.

They quoted taft? isn't that illegal?

Please tell me that Portune didn't say "it ought to be illegal to misrepresent the facts".

Todd, if misrepresentation of facts was illegal, your pal Simon would have no choice but to throw you in jail.

And Peppers & Dusty would join you for their "$.10/day" lie.

Wow! This just goes to show how gullible the pro-tax politicians and media really are.

These are the same people that believe a tax will be rescinded 15 years from now.

These are the same people who believe it will only cost people 10 cents a day.

These are the same people who believe that we cannot possibly build a new jail without paying twice as much as other counties have.

These are the same people who believe that if we just paid even more social workers to pat druggies on the back and hold their hands we would have less crime.

So, it's no surprise, really, that they fell for this.

It sounds like Mr. Portune has forgotten all about his own ghoulish behavior.

At the end of May he and Mr. Pepper treated the taxpayers to a new jail plan at more than triple its original cost. Their trick was to enact the super-sized tax with no voter input at all and see if they could sneak it through.

Now the voters are days away from their final say on the matter. They have researched the issue and fully understand why we don't need the jail and can't afford the tax.

Mr. Portune seems to have been taken-in by the cheeky endorsement parody because he didn't bother to read the details. That speaks volumes about the real problem. What a perfect trick-or-treat present from Mr. Gloyd.

What a whiney baby Portune is. Grow up Todd!

at 7:47 PM, October 31, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

So Portune thinks it should be illegal to parody an elected official? Ok. But he thinks it should be legal for the Sheriff to send a political advocacy letter telling his employees how to vote, while denying the other side the right to their own letter. He also thinks it should be legal to hold a press conference outside the Commission's offices to promote a tax hike while denying the opponents that same right.

Portune is being sued in State Court and Federal Court because he and Simon Leis do not have respect for the law. They should start obeying the laws already on the books before they start trying to pass more laws. I'm sure the streets will be safe once they pass a law banning the parody of politicians.

Wow. I hope all these anti-jail commenters here aren't really representative of the Issue 27 opposition campaign, because if they are, that effort is in serious trouble.

Todd has W's disease. He can't decide if he was elected King or Dictator?

At least Simon knows .... he was elected Dictator - not.

Glad to hear that County is proposing "deep cuts" for the 2008 budget - only Ham Co gov't could "cut" while increasing by $88 miilion/year (2007 vs 2008).

Correction - the feds can do that too.

The only question left is - will the general public have the time/brains to see through the Portune/Pepper/Leis/Deters BS?

By the way, Deters has said he's in favor of a new jail (so am I)but hasn't endorsed "this particular plan".

Hmmmm?

I got a recorded phone message from Dusty today (you probably did too) explaining how both parties, police, etc. have all come together in favor of the tax (& it's only $.10/day).

Dusty, I've trusted you all these many years - what happened - who bought you out? I'm despondent.

This whole thing smells like W - soundbites & BS.

If you can't put facts on the table, Todd - we'll vote NO!

the anti-safety grouppies have no truths to cash the checks they're kiting so they just make up MORE stuff.

I don't know what these people are thinking ---

We've got kids pistol whipping people, threatening their parents, stomping babies out of their mothers, --- and anti-safety groups are clamoring about to save pennies a day

Greedy b*st*rds

What a stunt, no different than all the other lies from Miller, DeWine, Finney, Patton, etc. The truth will emerge and they will all crawback into a hole together.

This anti-safety group who calls itself "we demand a better plan" has no plan B if Issue 27 is defeated. Truth is, they don't want a better plan; they don't want any plan at all. If they did, there would be a plan B.

This pathetic, ragtag group is a collection of shallow amateurs, fringe types, and general malcontents. The only thing they have in common besides opposition to Issue 27 is a complete lack of vision for the future of Hamilton County. Take their official spokesmouth, Jason Gloyd, as an example of their deceitful nature. He's been busy sending out fake press releases to local media and going on WLW saying Bob Taft endorsed Issue 27. Then you have another distinguished member of this group, Christopher Smitherman, saying that he'll ensure a career criminal is put back on the streets if Issue 27 is defeated.

How can we believe anything this group has to say about Issue 27?

Mark Miller, I don't know who you are but I noticed one thing >> the pro-tax attack-dogs don't mess with you!

They must have a little sense, very little.

Keep the faith - Millions, Tuesday night?

at 9:41 AM, November 02, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Millions Tuesday night indeed. Jason Gloyd was never on 700 WLW and the press release plainly says it's a parody and untrue. I fail to see how that was deceitful.

8:52 anon - excellent job on the name-calling agenda! Keep up the good work.

But wht was it you said?

Lies are true if you are Todd, Simon, David, or a kool-aid swillin' member of their posse.

HELL NO on 27 !!!!

VOTE NO ON ISSUE 27!

Jason Gloyd is a liar. He'll do anything to win - see yesterday's election.
