Sheriff backing out of debate?

Opponents of Issue 27 say Sheriff Simon Leis has abruptly pulled out of a debate tonight on the sales tax issue. Leis was scheduled to debate County Commissioner Pat DeWine at 7 p.m. at a Blue Chip Republican event --- both men are Republicans but stand on complete opposite sides of this issue.

However the Issue 27 opponents (DeWine's camp) say the sheriff pulled out because he's afraid of DeWine. Here's the press release.

The sheriff, through spokesman Steve Barnett, says that claim is ridiculous.

"That they would even fathom the sheriff is afraid of DeWine is unbelievable. He’s debated DeWine on a number of times in the past," Barnett said.

Barnett said the sheriff was asked awhile back to speak to the Blue Chips about the jail issue. The sheriff checked his calendar, realized he was going to be out of town and arranged to send Joe Schmitz, head of the corrections division, in his place. Barnett says the sheriff was never told it was to be a debate or that DeWine was going to be there.

As for the press release: "(Leis) asked me to let everyone know that’s a total fabrication. A lie," Barnett said. "That’s no different from antything else this group has been doing."

Is this the same Jason Gloyd who didn't show up at a debate (televised) last night in Finneytown? He's one to talk!

I love it, Leis caved in and will not be able to brainwash oops, I mean speak to all the little neocons. What will they ever do. Face it people, your big blotted fat cat sherrif would rather go out of town than explain his irrational theories to a bunch of neocons that eventhough they may be learning impared, they are nontheless smarter than he is.

Very tricky. When I double click press release, a window pops up for about 1/2 sec & disappears.
How did Simon Sez make that happen??

Jessica, please clarify the statement of Sheriff Leis spokesman Steve Barnett.

When Barnett said "That they would even fathom the sheriff is afraid of DeWine is unbelievable," he is referring to Pat DeWine's group - the "We Demand a Better Plan" coalition of the NAACP and COAST.

I think the only thing leis has to be afraid of is getting frustrated with DeWhine's lies, so much, that he just beats the pulp out of his skinny little, silver spoon, cheating on his wife, abandoning his kids, butt.

The COAST/DeWhine camp is making enemies right and left with their libertarian views of the world that encompasses only them and their wallets.

Fiscal responsibility (negating pork, waste and abuse) verses "cut and run" financial policies only leads to bankrupted budgets and eventually a bankrupt society - financially and morally.

Internet 101: You don't double-click hyperlinks.

It's too late. The right-wing Neo Con facists took over the Cow Chip Young Reactionaries a long time ago. That group thinks Sean Hannity is in the clutches of MoveOn.org.

They ran me out of the club because I, a Life Member of the NRA, was too much of a "mushy moderate." I guess I didn't insult John Kerry's ancrestry often enough to satisy their seething hatred. Then I realized every other Repug I know is as hate-filled as they are and when we finally had Repugs running things at every level, they turned our nation into a Third World economy with an Eastern Bloc police state.

Just a bunch of angry, hate-filled, unemployed or underemployed self-important unmarried men living with their mothers who all style themseles as political consultants because they have a Tom Brinkman sign in their yard and watch Fox News. They are not even worth the electons you are using to read this.

Coward.

The Sheriff never committed to speak at the meeting. He committed to have himself or someone from his office there. This was supposed to be a discussion on the issue, not a debate. There was a communication breakdown within the club and an over zealous bunch sent out a press release before confirming. Get over it. End of story. The real issue is the jail, not lame politics and posturing.

This is the most absurd allegation of the campaign. For weeks, they claim the Sheriff has been intimidating them! Now they claim the Sheriff is the one intimidated.

BIzarre.

The leadership (and I use that term loosely) of the Blue Chips sent out a release on October 10th confirming there would be a debate between DeWine and Leis. Nobody objected. Now Leis doesn't show up and says he never confirmed.

This leaves 1 of 2 possibilities. Either the Blue Chip leaders were incompetent by announcing a debate that was never agreed to, or Leis/his people agreed to the debate then backed out. It's one of the two.

When you don't have a solid position, you make stuff up to distract people.

It's been the M.O. of Issue 27 opponents all along.

We're still waiting for their solution to the jail issue. All I've seen is made up facts, exaggerated claims, and bogus political moves.

at 3:06 PM, October 23, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

And when I say solution I mean a viable one, not the laughable Plan B DeWine is putting out there.

at 3:20 PM, October 23, 2007 Anonymous Anonymous said...

DaWhine has announced his Plan B - it's "cut and run" as usual.

Cut all other programs and run from the problems.

Isn't that kind of like - robbing Peter to pay Paul? I think that's exactly what it is.

Someone seems to know more than the wRong wingnut whackos !

Put the DeWine plan in writing and ask an independent body to verifiy the numbers. Sound bites may sway the wide-eyed GOP wantabes, but in the end it just does not add up.

Never debate a fool.
Never fight a skunk.

First class is a way of life, not what college you went to, what your father's done, or making it to City Council and County Commission.

The Sheriff is a class act; DeWine is the class clown.

The Sheriff sure is classy. That's why he's being sued in State and Federal Court and had to agree to send the anti-tax letter out to avoid getting smacked around by the federal judge. He also admitted he backed out of the debate at the last minute. Way to keep your word!

It's so nice to see the sherrif getting bi___ slapped all over town. I love it. He looks like a stuffed pig that needs to be put down. Vote no on 27.
