This jail referendum is costing how much?

Hamilton County Commission President Todd Portune says the petition drive against the sales tax increase for a new jail could cost the county up to $36 million.

Yes, $36 million.

He gets that figure from the county's finance department. It says if enough signatures are valid (the petitioners need 28,750) the sales tax -- even if it's ultimately approved by voters -- will be delayed for months, costing millions through inflation, lost interest and leases and contracts.

The sales tax was originally supposed to start Oct. 1.

Here are the financial details.

Todd, nothing like a good dose of political voodoo-economic fear mongering. You know as well as I, projections can be skewed to fit the outcome. It’s done all the time. Company’s change “accounting methods” to cook their stock. We are not buying it. Try something else.

That beats paying a billion dollars for Portune's plan based on lies. Where's the pictures of the "crumbling walls" at Queensgate? Oh yeah, there aren't any because it's BS.

Hey County King Todd!!!

Guess how much the taxpayers will save when they vote down your b.s. plan?

The ignorance in this thread is astounding.

You can't spoof this stuff!

It’s not the government costing the city money but the citizens. Brecht said it all when he quipped that, if the people were not meeting their obligations to the government, the government would want to dissolve the people and elect another.

But people probably should be proud to be maligned by the Enquirer. It’s still the same bundle of pulp that defended slavery, reported the Confederate victory at Shiloh, and generally lied its way through most of its history.

Us county residents are and have been paying for an inadequate criminal justice system with space, treatment, services and accountaby - our property values inmany neighborhoods are decling, are schools are struggling to stayilit solvent, our rate of victimization has risen, our home, life, health and automobile insurance has risen, desired populations are in an exodus pattern, - like Portune or not - I'll give 'em credit for trying to fix the problem rather than ignor it because it is politically advantageous to do so.

Typical Republicans not caring about cost as long as they make it difficult. Portune is right!

Thanks King Todd. Whart would the regular citizens of this County do if you weren't hear to save us from ourselves with your superior intellect?

Wah. *You* put it on the ballot, and it failed. *You* passed it anyway, and people are fighting to stop *you* from ignoring them.

Who's the cause of the loss of money?

Why is Todd getting all the blame?? Si Leis is just as much a part of the jail tax - demanding the commission put it upon the taxpayers. He was the one refusing back down or change the jail plan. As long as Si is in office, Si will get what Si wants.

The "Si Leis Memorial Jail". This is what Si Leis wants to leave as his legacy, a new jail named after himself.
If the jail does get built (and I hope it doesn't), let's sell naming rights! That way we can decrease the cost by the amount of the sale price of the naming rights. I believe we should get this possibility out in the open right now.
