Senate Democrats respond to critics
After getting roundly blasted Friday by state Republican leaders and their own state party, Sen. Eric H. Kearney, Senate Assistant Minority Leader Tom Roberts and Sen. Shirley Smith defended Kearney's proposal today to move Ohio's presidential primary up from March 4 to Jan. 29, 2008.
Kearney introduced the bill Friday, saying it would keep Ohio relevant during the candidate selection process. Florida, Nevada, South Carolina and Wyoming already have approved earlier primaries for 2008.
"Ohio faces many unique challenges that national candidates need to address," said Kearney, a Democrat from North Avondale. "Home foreclosures, economic decline, and access to quality health care are serious issues that deserve the attention of anyone seeking national office."
"I am concerned that many voices are not being heard in our current system," said Roberts, a Dayton-area Democrat. "Key groups such as minority communities, labor and urban interests are being left out."
"This is not about one particular candidate," said Smith, a Cleveland Democrat. "With so many states changing their primary date, Ohio is being left out."
Republican leaders of both the state Senate and House said they are not interested in changing Ohio's presidential primary date.
Ohio Democratic Party spokesman Randy Borntrager said the state party is not interested in moving the primary date, and would risk losing national convention delegates by doing so.

How can Ohio NOT be relivent if we changed or not?? We "stole" the election in "04....
According to the moveon -progressive crowd, Ohio has enough power to steal China and re-name it New Blackwell.
UI, the power to steal elections disappeared when the voters rightfully tossed out Repugs like Blackwell last November.
Ted Strickland is now the Governor, Jennifer Brunner is now the Secretary of State.
Oh, and one more thing: the general election is going to be such a Democratic landlside in 2008 that the time to have influence is the primary.
Given the fact Bush actually LOST both elections he "won," and people are deserting the GOP on a daily basis, there is no way the general election will be even close once the votes are counted honestly.
Not. Gonna. Happen.
If Ken Blackwell is so great at stealing elections, why couldn't he steal one for himself to become our Governor? Some day, the far left will grow up and learn to accept responsibility when they lose elections.
George Bush won. Twice. Get over it.
ex gop,
I know the dhimmicrats have a better track record in elections, look at Illinois in 1960...boy, that was a clean win. Blackwell was probibly one of the most plesurable polititians I have ever met. If you think the Dhimmicrats in Columbus are going to be better than the out-going Repub's, you probibly also beleive your an ex-g.o.p.er.
CJ, Blackwell knew that with the polls showing him losing by 20 or 25 to Strickland, there was no way he could get away with stealing that election.
That's why.
ahhh, its nice to see everyone stayed on topic.
It doesn't surprise us that the wRong wingnut whackos would utilize weak intimidation and frivolous to stop Roberts!
They seem to forget that TRUTH is an affirmative defense.
That doesn't stop the wRong wingnut whackos from asserting hardship on dissenters !
Thus, Smith told the wRong wingnut whackos to take their frivolous outrage and kiss their fanny !
Collect that frivolous Democrat outrage now, Losers !
GOOD for The State !
PATHETIC !
HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007
UI,
Let's make a deal: I agree that the Dems stole Illinois for Kennedy in 1960, plus a few others during the Machine Era of politics, if you agree that Blackwell and Co. stole Ohio for Kerry.
I think there is about 10 times the evidence against Blackwell as there is against Richard Daley.
Besides man, it's 2007. 1960 was 47 years ago. Given the minimum voting age at the time (21), nearly every voter is at least retired, if not dead. Everyone intimately involved (Kennedy, Nixon, Daley, etc.) certianly is.
I wasn't even born in 1960, what about you?
So, guess what, believing the 1960 election was stolen for JFK is completely irrelevant to my becoming an ex-Republican. The stolen elections in 2000 and 2004 are much more relevant to me. That, plus the illegal war, the inept response to Katrina, shredding the Constitution in countless ways, and exporting our jobs on a wholesale basis are why I am an ex-Republican.
BTW, you'll notice I've never said I was a Democrat.
I don't think their motives are pure, I just think they seem to lack the courage to do what is really needed to turn Ohio and the USA around.
.
"If Ken Blackwell is so great at stealing elections, why couldn't he steal one for himself to become our Governor?..."
Oh !
He tried, but, he got caught and then went on a desperately seeking gay-bashers expedition !
Additionally the racist, rebel flag waving, wRong wingnut whackos would never permit a 'black-well' to produce the glass-bottled ceiling perrier !
A special note to the (4:33 PM, July 16, 2007) html impersonating wRong wingnut whacko: Thanks for idolizing 'bold endeavors' as you play: 'follower', the "EXPERIENCE LEADER" !
PATHETIC !
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !
C'mon we all know Kearney's doing this since it will help his close buddy Obama, who he has in town today for a 3rd time. I think Kearney's wife went to Harvard with Obama and may have been in his wedding.
Exgop,
My questioning of your exgop background lies in your seemingly lockstep aberrant to DNC talking points. I, like you perhaps, feel abandoned by the GOP’s failure to listen to their core supporters.
Concerning 1960, it was more of Joe Kennedy playing a better game than Howard Hughes.
I was very young then, but I do remember watching the famous debate.
If you may remember election night in 2000, Algore conceded the race before the final count in Fla., only to retract it twenty minutes later. I would imagine his campaign manager, William Daley from Chicago, (funny, where have I herd that name before??)
Slapped him around like Rommel and El Duce, and convinced him that it wasn’t over.
In the case of 2004, concerning Mr. Blackwell and Ohio, the most grievous voter fraud story came out of Akron involving “get out the vote” personnel and trading registrations for crack cocaine. I would find it hard to believe Mr. Blackwell was involved in that. http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041019/NEWS09/410190343
I am in agreement with you concerning the motivations of both parties and the lack of integrity that is displayed daily by elected officials. As far as Katrina is concerned, my opinion follows this link. http://www.house.gov/paul/nytg.htm

Wow,
Why can't we all just worry about what is best for the USA instead of ourselves?
This is what will bring down the gov't as we know it today. United We Stand Divided We Fall.
Put your personal feelings in check and lets work together to fight the real threats to our way of life.
God bless us all.
