Brown quizzes nominee over "gay people"

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown turned to a rather unusual line of questioning during the Senate confirmation hearing yesterday of James Holsinger, a former chancellor of the University of Kentucky medical center tapped by President Bush to be the next Surgeon General.

Holsinger has drawn fire because of a paper he wrote 16 years ago declaring that gay sex is unhealthy and unnatural, prompting Brown, a Democrat, to ask:

"There have been reports that over 50 Arabic translators have been fired from the Pentagon simply because they are gay. Given your past statements on homosexuality, what do you see as a greater threat to the health and safety of Americans: untranslated documents and intercepts from al-Qaida or gay people?"

Holsinger, not surprisingly, didn't quite know what to say.

"Well, that's certainly an interesting question that you have posed, senator. I've not had an opportunity to think through, as you might guess, an answer to that question at all. I think I would have grave concern for having the effective translators that we might need in order to be able to provide for the safety for our American people," he said.

Brown said he had asked the question is because "too often this administration has allowed ideology to override qualifications when it comes to critical positions," citing the much criticized handling of Hurricane Katrina by former FEMA head Michael Brown and the failed nomination of Bush counsel Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court.

"I just don’t want to see us go down that road again," he said.

It's very simple, really. Why can't these liberals such as Brown understand.

Don't ask -- don't tell -- don't translate. Damn the Torpedos!

That's what he's concerned about?!

Malia-gn, how interesting that a reporter doesn't get the relevance and importance of this line of questioning. People who think gays are a hazard to our safety - are off their rockers and are letting their personal phobias and ignorance to run our government. And, for our surgeon general - in charge of health issues - to bear these ideologies will affect our public policy regarding sex ed, AIDS, and mental health programs.

Valid questions Brown

Community pride begins at home !

Perhaps, there is some house cleaning to do in the gay community?

Don't be offended by terms utilized within Sherrod's home!

What are we getting all "jacked-up" about "being or not being gay"?

"RESPECT" begins at "HOME" !

Should we follow the principle:

Do as I say, not as I do ?

Sounds, "bush whacko" to us !

I believe that people who are gay are born that way. This is America. Even if we don't personally agree with gay people's lifestyle, we need to be tolerant and respect their rights as people.

To go to church on Sunday but turn around and to hate people who are gay because they are gay is wrong.

btw my comment above @4:45 PM is not to be taken seriously (for those of you who can't tell).

Malia: asking a health question of a Surgeon General appointee is not "unusual," it is expected. I understand Holsinger described his paper as a summary of the literature at the time prepared at the request of some religious groups.

Here's the problem: the groups specifically wanted to know about gays. If Holsinger has concerns about certain behaviors he should say so, irrespective of who is engaging in the behaviors. Gays don't do anything straights don't.

It is quite surprising that Holsinger didn't quite know what to say- not sure why you think it was surprising. If the man can't formulate a response to a question on conceptual and intellectually principled grounds, needing instead to "have an opportunity to think it through" (this isn't choosing a dinner entree for crying out loud), then he sounds like a political pragmatist and not the independent principled medical professional we need in that position.

50 gays working as Arabic translators in the Pentagon?????
If we use the 12% "gay in the US"
that makes roughly 416 Arab translators. And all of the "gay" ones fired because they are gay??? What a wopper!!!!! Sherrod, were any of the gay fired arabic translators spawns of Dick Chaney?????? Ask your pal from Boston.

i knew there was a reason i contributed to his campaign and voted for sherrod brown. he is spot on going to the heart of the matter. which is more important, your skewed ideology or science? which is more important, your messed up philosophy or our safety?

notice that holszinger did exactly what the shrubs supreme court nominees did. he lied (of course he's thought about it), he dodged, and he failed to answer the question truthfully.

hopefully, enough democrats and good republicans (now thats an oxymoron) will see thru holzinger and send him packing.

had enough? vote democratic all the way down the line.

Brown asked relevant questions. Good for him!

What I really dislike is the Enquirer putting quotes around "gay people." Why is that necessary?

If you continue to do this, I insist you also put quote marks around "Republican" and "journalism."

a concerned reader was spot on. The Fishwrap should also make sure to put quotes around "reporter."

AIDS , Hepatitis, suicide... First, there was just a report in the paper about who is committing suicide - white, middle aged , middle class, hetero males (in our region). And as for the AIDS and hepatitis - exactly why we need someone who understands the gay culture ( if there's really one - other than the common experience of coming out and public ridicule) who can address the problems without attacking the behavior.

Gayness is unnatural. Get over it. A quick lesson in anatomy and survival of the fittest (your favorite theory) will surely convince you of this. So stop shouting down those of us who understand reality and hold a belief which is supported by thousands of years of human history. Of course there have been pockets of homosexuals throughout history, but it has never been "accepted" like it has today. I.e. I guess we are so enlightened that we can erase a standard held for the entire history of mankind.

I'm sorry but the Romans "accepted" homosexuality greatly. Perhaps it is unnatural but it isn't a choice, unless you believe that you yourself can choose to love a man with the same passion your love a woman. Also, they are shouting down those of you who are risking the safety of our country because you fired the man because of what he is attracted to. Hell why don't we start firing people based on their fetishes?
