Driehaus rakes it in

Steve Driehaus, the term-limited state legislator from Price Hill who will take on Steve Chabot in the 1st Congressional District, raised a prodigious amount of money in the first six weeks or so of his campaign.

Driehaus has filed a second-quarter report with the Federal Elections Commission showing he went from zero to about $165,000 from mid-May to June 30, the cut-off date for second quarter reports.

Now, understand that some of this money came in the form of contributions from the "leadership PACs" of high-ranking Democratic members in Congress who wanted to sow some seeds for Driehaus. And some came from the campaign accounts of some of Driehaus' fellow Democratic legislators in Columbus.

But Driehaus says that nearly $100,000 of the money he raised came from individual contributors. That is what the leadership of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is looking for - signs that the candidate knows how to raise money on his own.

The good news for donors was that none of them had to stand around a hotel meeting room sipping drinks and eating cheese cubes to show their support for Driehaus. He hasn't held any fundraising events yet; all the money raised so far from individuals was done by Driehaus dialing people up on the phone.

Typical wRong wingnut whacko spewing the elephant dung propaganda !

Hello, the wRong wingnuts have controlled the state. While in the minority, it is difficult to combat the 'culture of corruption' !

Can you say Predatory Lending ?

When you make your weak attempt at 'cheney shoot the messenger', you clearly demonstrate your political naïveté !

Is Driehaus familiar with the song, "Can't buy me Love?"

Will somebody who knows something please tell me what the 411 is on "Driehaus as a Congressional candidate," versus "John Cranley as a Congressional Candidate."

I saw JC's (lengthy) video postings in 2006 and I was impressed with his knowledge of national affairs.
I thought he would have made a great congressman for Cincinnati and I was disappointed that Steve Chabot prevailed.

Would someone please post this info? Thanks. I don't live in the Cinci area so I really can't find out on my own.

let me inyterject a little truth about taxes. a right wing think came up the Ohio is the fourth highest taxed state and Ken Blackwell repeated this often. It did seem right, so i checked with US Census Bureau statistics. Ohio combined individual taxes per capita at all levels state, county, and local including sales, property and income taxes are 26th among the 50 states.

Driehaus is going to whoop up on plip floppin', no foresight-get-us-into-a -war Chabot and his political loyalties over loyalties to his constitutients.

We gave Chabot one more chance - and he blew it - his little humble games - standing on corners begging for votes- isn't going to work anymore - he has lost his moral, Hamilton County compass

If Steve Chabot lost, he would not have access to the Congressional barber shop. instead of that freebie, he would have to pay real money for a real haircut and maybe then he wouldn't look so ridiculous.

Driehaus is just a tool of the liberals in Washington. Read more in the NYTimes:

http://www.nytimes.com/cq/2007/07/13/cq_3081.html

• Ohio’s 1st District. As seven-term Republican Steve Chabot gears up for another re-election bid in a politically competitive district that includes most of Cincinnati, it is abundantly clear from state Rep. Steve Driehaus’ FEC report that he is 2008 challenger candidate preferred by Democratic Party leaders.

The party’s preference for Driehaus was well-known long ago, but his first campaign finance report showed contributions from political committees linked to a constellation of House Democratic leaders: Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California; Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland; Majority Whip James E. Clyburn of South Carolina; Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is heading up the party’s effort to defeat Chabot and other House Republicans; and Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, the DCCC chairman during the party’s successful 2006 campaign, who is now chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

Request for Insider info

(Please respond, Tim Burke. You can use a secret code like "Tampa Bay 48" if you like:)

A commenter above posted a link saying that the national democratic leadership had chosen State Rep Driehaus as the "preferred Democratic challenger" in the race v Rep Chabot.

So who cares? I am a mainstream Democrat and I think that Pelosi, Steny Hoyer et al should be booted out.

What does the Tim Burke/TAL-iban crowd think?

JC was great on video/webcasts. Who cares if he is short? So was Napoleon....so was US Rep Dante Fascell, the "Father of the Freedom of Information Act".....etc

Hey....how come Tim Burke himself doesn't consider running? I can never remember a time when there wasn't a "Tim Burke" comment floating around the office.

Anyway, Cincinnati must have someone who can make an impact at the national level.

(Who knows? Maybe one day there will be big celebration in Fountain Square for "US President Leslie Ghiz-Aziz" ) :)

Drihaus is to be another casualty in a line of Democratic soldiers who will take a political loss to weaken Chabot until they can find someone credible enough to defeat him. If anyone had a shot it was Cranley, and that moment has passed.

This is really getting great!! Do you really think that some state house back-bencher is going to take down Chabby?? You might want to check with one of the Sedamsville bookies before you make that bet. After Nov., Driehaus will be curled up in the fetal possision and crying for his mommy.
Has anybody seen David"Aunt Bea" Mann since he had his dose of medicine?????????????

I have never seen so much attention to a guy who has NO record of accomplishment, and is known, and not liked, by both dems and reps in Columbus. Words like "arrogant", know-it-all, and Steve Little Hands are what you hear.

Fodder for Chabot.

Driehaus like to pretend he is some kind of mainstream, conservative, common-sense Democrat. Get him in a casual setting, and when he opens his mouth he sounds like Fidel Castro with a good shave and a haircut.

Driehaus is a couple Hudys and a Nikon away from being outed for the hateful socialist he really is.

I think any real democrat who is for reproductive freedom would crush Driehaus in the primary.Do you realize how many pro-choice woman Hillary is going to bring to this primary? Also, the fact that the right wing has the five votes to overturn Roe v. Wade means that dems know having a pro-choice canidate is important.

Too bad Vic Wulsin made $213K this quarter for a primary race without support from the national party. See http://www.swingstateproject.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=630 Driehuas' numbers are anemic for a viable candidate.

To those who claim to know ALL in re Congressional Democratic candidates:

I really hate hearing things about a potential Cranley-Chabot rematch like , "that moment has passed."

I think it was Abe Lincoln who said, "It is your own resolution to success that matters more than any one other thing,"......and if it wasn't Abe Lincoln who said that, well, then it was some other big-name politician.

I guess it was a shame that the second Cranley-Chabot match was in a non-Presidential year. However, I don't know if the difference in potential turnout would have helped or not.

I think that the whole "term limits for legislators" is bad for the nation as a whole.......legislators don't need term limits, although it is possible that "State's Atty's" do...I can think of one State Attny who has been in his job in a prominent County (in Florida) for over 32 years.

That is where "power" is.....the power to prosecute someone for a crime....or to look the other way and not prosecute.

I also don't like it when voters are denied a meaningful primary choice.....

Anyway, as the saying goes, "The only difference between winning and losing is the way people treat you."

(That's a quote from Billy Bob Thornton in the movie, "Friday Night Lights.")

I like to read about Cinci politics because at least in Cinci, you do seem to have a viable two-party system where there are actually candidates vying for elective office at every level...including municipal judgeships.

In certain places (like Florida, the Peninsular State), there never was a real two-party system at the local level, and many candidates at all levels are re-elected for many terms with absolutely no opponent at all.

In those cases, they merely pay the qualifying fee, and if no one files against them......then they are re-elected an their names never appear on an ballot at all.

They call that "automatically re-elected."

This happens all the time.

In Broward County Florida, the 28-year old son of the local Sheriff (named as 'the most politically powerful man in the county) was "elected" to the State House merely by paying the $1500+ qualifying fee.....no one "signed up" to run against him.

So this 28-year old (Evan Jenne) became a Florida State Rep without ever having his name even printed on a ballot......didn't need to...he was "automatically elected" to an open House seat.

His remark to the press was, "well it would take a million dollars or more to have the name recognition of Jenne,".....

He is not even the first politician in Broward to have been "elected" to an open seat for the State House with no opponent, and never even had his name printed on a ballot.

So I guess this is what you might call "post-modern" democracy.....or else no democracy at all.
