Boehner to Democrats: Wait until September

Today was another watershed in the debate over Iraq policy, with President Bush releasing an interim report on progress there, the Senate debating the issue and the House approving legislation that would require the withdrawal of U.S. troops starting in 4 months.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, West Chester, responded:

“Today’s report provides Americans with a snapshot of the progress, setbacks, and ongoing challenges we face in Iraq. The progress made on reducing violence and improving security in Iraq, after less than one month of full troop strength, has been a positive development. But we need to see more progress from the Iraqi people and their government on key political benchmarks where the progress has not been satisfactory.

“My Democratic friends say they want to withdraw American forces from Iraq immediately, but the bill on the House floor doesn’t do that. Instead, we’re engaged in yet another partisan debate that accomplishes only one thing: it gives our enemies another public relations victory. The Democrats’ bill fails to protect our troops, making them all pawns in a partisan political game, and it publicly undermines General Petraeus just weeks after we gave him the full resources needed to implement the Baghdad Security Plan.

“The American people believe that our military commanders, not Washington politicians, are in the best position to make critical national security decisions and so do Republicans. General Petraeus and our troops are hard at work in their mission now, they deserve our full support, and we look forward to hearing the General’s report and recommendations in September.”

Boehner says: " The American people believe that our military commanders, not Washington politicians, are in the best position to make critical national security decisions and so do Republicans."

If that's true -- then " The American people" and Republicans believe in military dictatorship!

I'm an American person, and brother you do NOT speak for me when you say that.

Boehner is a hypocrite. Back in January, he was saying this:

(Boehner) was asked the following question: "How long can you and your membership give the President and give the Iraqi military before you say, `You know what? You're not doing your job.'?" Boehner's answer: "I think it'll be rather clear in the next sixty to ninety days as to whether this plan's going to work."

Now he's moving the goalposts AGAIN. How many times are we going to hear "success is just around the corner"?

Republicans like Boehner need to quit obstructing an Iraq exit strategy, and start working with Democrats to bring our troops home safely.

I am an American and I want my troops home. Don't put words in our mouths Boehner. This administration is a disgrace to our country.

Despite being very worried about what Colin Powell said - Iraq's like Pottery Barn, you break it, you own it. How can we just abandon these people after destroying their infrastructure and economy? What slaughter will happen to those who be-friended us and help us in this horrific display or egomania and greed?

The thing that concerns me most is that so many of our legislators couldn't see what so many other could see and now we have to deal with their utter incompetence - vote 'em out and those we can't vote out - impeach them
We need to re-establish our reputation as a nation of people who hold these incompetents accountable ( and sue them for the money we lost too )

Bush's "update" yesterday signalled that he understood that "sound bites" don't work anymore. Mr. Boehner is still trying the old game!

anon@7:42 PM. The number of people who be-friended us in Iraq is probably not that great. I'm guessing, a relative handful. What will happen to them if we leave? Oh they'll be killed if they remain. But so will the al-Qaeda element in Iraq, I would think. It'll sure be a mess for a while. But these things always settle down.

Look at Vietnam. They are our friends now. Seems " Charlie" has made us all proud! There was no commie " domino effect" in the region and " Charlie" did not tunnel to Hawaii after we left.
But this is all moot, because we ain't leaving Iraq anytime soon. Maybe never. In my humble opinion of course.

do you suppose General Petraeus understands that his legacy is that the shrub has made him the fall guy for iraq?

how appropriate to hear on the anniversary of katrina:

you're doing a heck of a job General Petraeus.
