40,000 signatures and counting

The WeDemandAVote folks announced today they have hit 40,000 signatures.

Last week they announced they had hit 34,000 signatures in their effort to place a planned Hamilton County sales tax increase for a new jail on the November ballot.

WeDemandAVote.com, a coalition of seven groups opposed to a county commission-imposed increase in the sales tax, has to collect the signatures of 28,750 registered Hamilton County voters by Friday to put the issue on the November ballot.

Typically in petition campaigns, anywhere from 30 percent to 50 percent of signatures collected are thrown out because they did not come from registered voters or because petitions were not handled properly.

WHOOPPEE! I could hear the shouts from the Justice Center to Queensgate to OTR - the inmates and those with outstanding violent warrants are thrilled with the efforts of COAST to run all law abiding citizens out of the county!

I think I hear some White Democrats shaking in their boots.

And while I'm here, I'd like to thank the Hamilton County Republican Party and local "conservative" bloggers for doing absolutely nothing to help us repeal The White Democratic Sales Tax Hike.

Finney and DeWine will forever be the face of "early releases."

Congratulations, boys. You have officially handed the Democrats (of whatever color) the safety mantra.

Well said CincyJeff!

I admire people that rebuke their own party when it is wrong. The Democrats and Republicans are the most worthless political parties in this world.

They don't care what's good for us or what we think. The are corporate shills that have shredded our constitution, nearly bankrupted our nation and made us hated around the world. This was a bipartisan effort.

Mission Acomplished!

I agree with the posting that they missed the deadline, but I think they'll be given a "pass" unless a third party contests it - I think alot of people want this to go to a public vote so they can prove that the majority of citizens want this new plan and to prove that the courage of the commissioners is applauded, approved and supported by the public.

The NAACP and COAST have made this what will likely be the first and most evident black-white voting pattern.

Let 'em have the 40K, we'll take the rest if this makes it to a public vote. The majority of county residents have had enough - we're taking back our streets, neighborhoods and communities!

I find it interesting that Pepper, as a councilman authors legislation to re-criminalize pot in the city (not the county) and then all of a sudden we have all these Willie Horton’s walking the streets. I, like many others have seen these desperados scarfing down hot fudge Sundays at UDF. Oh, the humanity!
If we have law enforcement personnel and judges that will jail potheads and let criminals loose that have been arrested on weapons charges, assault, and other violent crimes, it tells me that maybe judges are setting bond to low.
Maybe if the county commissioners would allow the Police to once again use the words “STOP, OR I’LL SHOOT” The incidence of violent crime would drop and leave us more jail space.

Well, usefullidiot , the commissioners don't pass criminal laws and they don't control the policies of the police.

I don't think what you arer seeing is "white democrats" shaking in their boots - I think it's victims of crime, would be victims of crime, mothers of young black men in jail who are begging for services or "help" for there children, I think it's the family of kids who committed serious offenses being sent up state - far away from them and their support system, to wing it alone in a state jail system that is plagued with abuse claims -- I think homeowners in Price Hill, Colerain, Springfield,.... are shakingin their boots watching their primary nest egg - their homes, dropping in value

Everybody but the tight wads from COAST and the criminals are shaking in their boots - because it isn't about winning anything - it's about solving the problem - and without this plan, all we have is the status quo- and that's not working

Anon 242,

I hear your cry , but it sounds as though your concern lies with mothers of young black men with no mention of fathers. I can then draw the conclusion that the fathers are meaningless.
Feel-good social programs have been proven failiers. This tax will generate 700m? It's going to cost 248m for a jail to lock up young black men? Where is the rest of this money going? Discretionary spending?? Or is the county in fiscal trouble?
The tax oppisition is colorblind on this issue, but the race card is continuialy pulled by the proponits.

It's going to operate the damn jail, moron. Can't you read?

I think fathers are the most important and valuable natural resource on the Earth - so draw what ever conclusions you want.

Is discretionary spending a bad thing whenit helps addicts break free of their curses? Is discretionary spending bad when it treats the mentally ill and gets themoff the street? Is discretionary spending bad when it means taxpayers won't have to repeatedly be victims of the crimes of those who haven't been blessed with the presense of their fathers in their lives, the benefits of health care that allows mental health services, where poverty negates education and social policy is defeats its purpose when politicized.
Discretionary spending has been TOO discretionary for TOO long - we have found if we don't give people a hand up - we will give them a hand out - too often in a jail cell.
