Jean Schmidt in NKY
Guest blogger Margaret McGurk reports:
U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt told the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Monday that financing for the new Brent Spence Bridge is a question yet to be answered.
Schmidt, a member of the House Transportation Committee, said, “I don’t know we are going to find the money, but the money has to be found.”
The speech was dotted with references to "the party that is running things now," and "the other party." But she did call attention to Nancy Pelosi's historic election as Speaker of the House, saying " I am thrilled to be serving with a female Speaker."
She managed not to mention either Pelosi's name or party affiliation.
Schmidt also took one mild shot at the current administration when the subject of passport applications came up. Members of her staff sometimes work until 11 at night dealing with the flood of pleas for help from travelers afraid they will miss long-planned trips because of the State Department's massive backlog.
While making a point of saying how much she admires Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Schmidt said when it comes to the passport crunch, "The administration really dropped the ball."
Also, while trying to explain the dangers posed by Iraqi insurgents, Schmidt misplaced the founding of Islam by about 400 years. She told the crowd that the enemy considers it sinful to live anything except "a nomadic life of probably the third century."
Muhammed, the founder of Islam, was born late in the sixth century. Historians date the religion to the early decades of the seventh century.

So we're at war with 3rd century nomads now? Great Scott! What happened to the Islamo-Fascists? They can't be both! Unless they carry the iron heel of The State around with them in a tent.
Dear Ms. Schimdt, My Father (a carnival Gypsy) used to often say, "It's better to be a nomad than just plain mad."
AOA, very insightful comment. Thank you so much. A remarkable display of a keen ability to persist in looking up a dead horse's butt.
Carl Weiser, turn about is fair play. Jean messed up chronologically. You misspelled "Mohammed." Were you in a big hurry to say something critical of the good Congresswoman?
Apparently.
There is more than one way to spell Muhammed, you idiot. Just like there's more than one way to spell Osama (Usama). Although, spelling is the least of your problems when you're a Schmidt supporter.
Mean Jean Schmidt reveals a prejudiced attitude when she says she's thrilled to serve with a female Speaker. Why does liberal Nancy Pelosi's gender matter?
What if a male Congressman said that he can't stand serving with a female Speaker, would Mean Jean that's ok? Or does Mean Jean feels we should judge men on their merits but not women?
carl didnt get his daily nap today...
Jean Schmidt is so bad that even other right-wing Jesus Freaks are repulsed and embarassed by her. That takes talent.
tnp:
You are an idiot.
Are we supposed to be surprised by her stupidity?
What is missing in this report is any discussion of Rep. Schmidt's recent Memorial Day weekend trip to Baghdad. Did she have anything to say about the trip at this venue? Is she going to prepare a report for her website and for the press? What did she learn in Iraq? What did she see? Who did she talk to? What did they say? Are we "winning" in Iraq? How is the surge going? Will troops stay in Iraq, a la Korea, for the next 50 years? And so on. Since we taxpayers footed the bill for this trip, it seems we are entitled to a report on Rep. Schmidt's trip. I have been calling for such a report (both to her office and to the press) but so far, silence.
Dear Tnp,
"Muhammed" is the preferred English spelling. "Mohammed" is a variation.
Jean,
My patience is wearing thin. If you haven't noticed, "the party that is running things now" is in the White House (not the Congress).
The last time the Democrats were in the White House, America was not at war. The last time the Democrats were in the White House, gasoline was a buck a gallon on a good day. I remember paying $0.93 per gallon on the best days. The last time the Democrats were in the White House, they tried (even though they failed) to change the way healthcare is paid for in America.
Your days as our Congresswoman are numbered. You might win again in 2008, but that will be the last time. There is one Democrat who is going to show you how it's done... Before and after his election to the US House of Representatives. Stay tuned.
Oh so what, Mohammed or Muhammed. Either spelling is correct. The point is, if we withdraw from Parthia now these nomadic devils will follow us home!
"The point is, if we withdraw from Parthia now these nomadic devils will follow us home!"
Actually, that is false.
In speech after speech, in statement after statement, Bush insists that “this is a war in which, if we were to leave before the job is done, the enemy would follow us here.”
...But is it true?
Military and diplomatic analysts say it isn't. They accuse Bush of exaggerating the threat that enemy forces in Iraq pose to the U.S. mainland.
And consider this:
U.S. military, intelligence and diplomatic experts in Bush's own government say the violence in Iraq is primarily a struggle for power between Shiite and Sunni Muslim Iraqis seeking to dominate their society, not a crusade by radical Sunni jihadists bent on carrying the battle to the United States.
Now let's see what Jean Schmidt, in her infinite wisdom, thinks about the Shiite/Sunni rivalry:
The insurgents, she said, "want to do nothing but destroy the way we live, the way we think, the way we believe."
Jean Schmidt can't solve the problems in Iraq, because she doesn't even understand the problems to begin with. She's an idiot.
umm yah anon@10:19 AM
Do tell!
Is this the same story in which Jean praises Bush's tax cuts, which allows everyone to spend more money which in turn creates more jobs when we "buy that iPod or those new Nike shoes"? It's too bad that those jobs are overseas.
