Dogs on the Square?
UPDATE -
It turns out, city officials have been reviewing this policy already. That's because of the growing downtown population, spokeswoman Meg Olberding says, and the possibility that those people have dogs and would like to walk them around downtown, including on the square.
"People feel very strongly on both sides of the issue," she says.
The policy dates back to 1975.

City Manager Milton Dohoney might not know it yet, but some dog lovers are coming for him.
A group promoting last weekend's Opera Dogs event learned something they don't think is right: that dogs aren't allowed on Fountain Square. When organizer Lydia Stec asked 3CDC - the Center City Development Corp., which operates the square - about the rule, Bill Donabedian referred her to Dohoney.
The rule is posted on http://www.myfountainsquare.com/. But Stec, who showed up on the square Saturday with her Rhodesian ridgeback Juju, who was dressed in a tuxedo, didn't know about it. So only Juju and Buster, a dressed-up pug, were allowed on the square - because they were part of an event there. The other six or seven non-costumed dogs and their owners who'd come to support the Opera Dogs had to stand along Vine Street, Stec said.
"It was the strangest thing," she said today. "It was unbelievable."
She and others are questioning the wisdom of the policy. They think a lot of the young professionals city officials would like to attract to downtown living will have dogs.
Stec's asking anyone who agrees with her to lodge a complaint through http://www.myfountainsquare.com/.

Rhodesian Ridgeback my eye. That's a Zimbabweian Ridgeback, thank you! -- Oh how you colonialists cling to the past. Ugh
Maybe chrissy monzel can take a break from his Ice Cream Truck and Cable Wire crusades and tackle this important problem.
Get to it, Bradford.

The real 'DOGS" are the misleaders at 3CDC !
PATHETIC !
HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

Anon 12:19, the actual name for the breed of dog is the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Check the AKC & the Westminster Kennel Club. They are the authorities on dog breeds.
Colonialism & racism do not factor in this. However, there are those who will inflect racism at each & every turn.
anon@1:20 PM. Oh really? Well I have a msg for the AKC & the Westminster Kennel Club. -- Hands OFF my "Freedom Poodle"
and btw, I dunno what the Westminster Kennel Club think about cramming a Zimbabweian Ridgeback into a tuxedo, but I reckon the SPCA frown on it.
Why not stick a Philly Blunt in it's mouth, pour it a vodka and deal it a hand of Stud Poker? That would really look "cute".
*just shakes his head*
What the square needs is a legion of cats to deal with those dang pigeons.
You want people to come downtown. You have an event for REGIONAL organization like the opera and they don't let suporters of the event and their dogs on the darned square because of some blue law from 1975?
Has anywone ever heard of common sense in this city?
Simply require people to clean up after their pets and stay out OF the fountain.
Honest to goodness I'd rather see fountain square surrounded by happy wagging tails than have to run the gauntlet of people asking me for money any day.
It's time for a change in this law and for this City to get some sense. PLEASE?
welcome to Cincy, where an issue like this will get kicked around for weeks and weeks. Come on downtown, there is sooooooooo much to do. Yea right, have a $15 lunch and maybe get hit up for coffee money from a bum!! Lovely. Lets go to the Banks. Oh, sorry I forgot that still a hole in the ground after how many years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much for commenting about the real issue, huh? Let's just debate the naming of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Productive.
This is just one more example of how backwards the City of Cincinnati can be. I will definitely lodge a complaint.
like so much of the rest of our city, this policy is stuck in the past.
Cincinnati is a working class cat-people town. Always has been and always will be. It was called " Tabby Town" in the pre civil war era.
If the nouveau riche want to play dress-up fido they need to take that mess to Cleveland.
My dog, " Checkers" is happy with a conservative cloth coat and green felt bowler.
While it is certainly their right to over dress their dogs(and I will defend to the death this right), I feel the Opera Dog crowd set a bad precedent in parading them around in tuxedos, top hats, gold pocket watches and other such gaudy attire.
I moved downtown last year. We love our dogs in Park Place and have been thrilled to see "wagging tails" on the square. Having lived in Boulder where dogs numbers are almost the same as humans and are more well behaved, I am dismayed about this issue, which should be a non-issue.
If we want to make downtown liveable and welcoming, let the dogs, cats, on the square and enforce the law which requires oners to pickup poo!
Staying out of the Fountain is a given.
Call Council members, the Mayor, City Manager, etc. Cincinnati, today.
I agree with Cindy in Lower Hyde Park@7:18 PM and the others.
It's high time we had a little culture in this city. I'd rather see a lot of High class pups dressed to the (K) 9's than the usual unclean mob of starving beggers loping about.
Let these fine citizens enjoy the Opera, and if they choose to do so doggie-style, well, I might even join them.
Why is this even an issue? Oh I forgot this is Cincinnati.
How it all got started. I am the organizer of Opera Dogs. It all got started when my daughter began dressing up our RHODESIAN Ridgeback in her dress ups and he actually liked it! Yes, my dog JuJu, in all seriousness , would be barking at the mail carrier dressed like a princess wearing his tiara and fine costumed jewels. This is how I discovered my dog's love of costumes and theater. We came to realize that there are many other dogs out there who share this same passion for dress ups. I then organized Opera Dogs for iRhine in 2006, visit www.irhine.com, Over-the-Rhine's website and ezine. Opera Dogs is a unique cultural event created to celebrate the arts, OTR, and Cincinnati. My intention is to bring fun events to Washington Park and to kick off the Opera's season in a fun unique way that is true to these dogs passions for dress up. We, JuJu and I, were invited on Saturday June 9 the day before Opera Dogs, to participate in a event on fountain square. They contacted me. They were actually pressuring me to have as many costumed dogs there as I could get but I could only round up my dog JuJu, the Rhodesian Ridgeback and last year's Opera Dogs winner a Pug named Buster. I told many dog owners and supporters of Opera Dogs that we were going to be there and to please come and show support. Our costumed dogs were allowed on the square but the other dogs were not and they were kicked off. What I don't understand is why Opera Dogs was invited to the square when there is a No Dog policy? Why is there a No Dog policy when the city wants to bring urban living back to its downtown? Many people have dogs and love there dogs. I think the policy needs to change and thank those of you who have spoken up about this ridiculous rule that is outdated.

Ma'am, with all due respect, you are going to turn that dog into a sissy if you continue to dress him up as a princess.
Dress him like Liberace and see if he can channel the spirit of Elvis.
No?
I find it interesting that Lydia Stec finds this all to be so outrageous.
My dog was Second Place Winner for his costume at Opera Dogs last year and because of a personal disagreement (having NOTHING to do with Opera Dogs), Stec decidedly cast my dog out of this particular event on Fountain Square on 6/9, an event to which he had previously been invited. MY dog was decidedly counted out of this event by Lydia Stec - even with his winning status at Opera Dogs 2006 - and all for Stec's personal reasons.
What is Stec's issue with this if not about HERSELF? Obviously, for her, it is not about the rights of the dogs.
With all due respect, Lydia Stec should have recviewed the rules of Fountain Square prior to launching this "event" of hers.
I am very glad that my dog and I were NOT in attendance for this debacle on the Square.
EXCUSE ME, but Lydia Stec could CERTAINLY have rounded up more than Buster and her own dog (actually her husband's dog, who is SUSPECTED as being a Rhodesian Ridgeback - he's a great dog whom my dog loves, but honestly JuJu was found as a stray and Does Not have Rhodesian Ridgeback confirmation and does not have a "ridge", and by AKC standards they MUST have the ridge).
MY dog was one of the others that Stec HAD "rounded up" for this particular Fountain Square event - my dog was last year's Second Place Costume Winner at Opera Dogs.
But Lydia Stec decidedly DID NOT have my dog and I attend the Fountain Square "event" that she held - for PERSONAL reasons of her own that have NOTHING to do with Opera Dogs.
So, NO - Lydia Stec is NOT in this for the dogs, she is in this for HERSELF.
