Strickland: Iraq war an "unnecessary tragedy"

Gongwer News Service, which covers everything Columbus, interviewed Gov. Strickland on Friday.

The highlights:

Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland on Friday called the war an "unnecessary tragedy," and said he would have voted against the funding had he still been a member of Congress.

"I wish the Congress had been stronger with the President. The American people have spoken. There is no doubt that the majority of the people in this country recognize the fact that we are headed in the wrong direction. There needs to be a change in policy," the governor said in an interview.

Gov. Strickland said Friday he voted against authorization of the war because he never felt the administration had properly made the case for it.

"And the war has been so terribly mismanaged, and it's been due to the decisions of our civilian leadership," he said.

"Our soldiers have done everything that's been asked of them and more. It's been the civilian leadership, led by people who never served themselves, who seem to have all the answers and refuse to recognize the reality that is occurring," Gov. Strickland said.

"And the result is continued loss of life, wasting of our nation's resources and a disintegration of our standing around the world. We need a change in direction and we need new leadership," he said.

The Iraq War will be the downfall of the Repugnicant Party.

That, and their complete and total disregard for the welfare of children.

Strickland has a right to his own opinion, even though he is completely wrong. The Iraq fighting is just one part of our global struggle against the thugs and murderers of Islamic Fascism, and it's necessary that we win. Those who don't understand the value of victory or the ugly and dangerous consequences of the surrender they advocate are the true "unnecessary tragedy," and that includes nearly all Democrats.

I agree with both sides - the war is a tradegy and losing it is a catastrophy for the American image across the world - but the reason it is a tradegy is because the administration that started the war not only picked the wrong enemy, they also picked the wrong strategy to win.
This was a war for war's sake, that many said was done to create huge windfall profits for the oil industry - and in that respect, it sure does appear to be true.
3500+ lives lost is the biggest travesty - blood mone- and we're all paying for it in our communities and at the pump.

We could lose this war. Or we could retreat and concede and accommodate and appease until we're painted into a corner and HAVE to use some really, really bad stuff. All you hand-wringing, do-gooder socialists who call yourselves Democrats or "secular progressives" or liberals or whatever advocate the "Cut and Run Approach" to this war, and if you have your way, that foolish path will eventually lead to unbelievable death and destruction, the like of which makes every bit of combat we've taken to the enemy to date look like a Sunday School picnic. You don't see it. That's why I'm dead-set against any Democrat victory in any election, especially the forthcoming 2008 donnybrooks. And reasonably well-informed voters should join me, other issues notwithstanding. If we lose this war over the next 40 years, not a whole lot of other issues will matter. And the same thing is true if you Dems blithely paint us into that desperate corner, and rather than submit to Islamic Fascist tyranny, we blow the Arab world to smithereens. Come down to earth and understand that it could happen, damn you.

We defeated the Iraqis, tnp - what part of that don't you understand? Saddam is dead and his military is defeated - again, what part of that don't you understand? But George W. Bush is stuck on stupid as far as Iraq is concerned. The sad truth is Strickland is right - Iraq is a Blunder of historic proportions - We are now in Day 1550 of Bush's Blunder in Iraq - America Held Hostage to Bush's Stupidity. Those deaths in Iraq are pointless and tragic, on par with them being victims of a DUI accident - and Bush is the driver at fault.

BA, I'm talking about the global war against Islamic Fascism. The fighting in Iraq is merely one part of the greater whole, albeit an important part. We cannot afford to let the thugs and murderers of Radical Islam have free reign in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Iran and Syria and perhaps Sudan are next.
