Schmidt visits Iraq, Afghanistan

From this week's "Inside Washington" column:

Rep. Jean Schmidt had planned to spend her Memorial Day holiday with U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The men and women serving our nation need to hear more often how proud we are of their courage and commitment to protecting our freedoms," said Schmidt, a Republican from Miami Township.

The exact dates for Schmidt's trip overseas - her second to Iraq - were not released, due to security concerns. Schmidt described her trip on Friday to reporters.

"As I return to Iraq, I will again witness firsthand the courage and sacrifice of our troops this Memorial Day weekend as they spend the weekend thousands of miles away from their families, friends and the comforts of home," she said.

Schmidt's group is made up of two Republicans and two Democrats.

"Here in southern Ohio, Memorial Day is a much anticipated day celebrating the unofficial start of summer," Schmidt said. "But it is important for all of us to take a break from our busy holiday schedules to remember that freedom is never free."

I wonder if Mean Jean took the time to explain to tell the soldiers to their faces that the Walter Reed scandal was "overblown".

Mean Jean can take all the PR trips she wants, but she cannot pretend to care about the soldiers while at the same time claiming it's ok for them to sleep in their own urine and shower with rodents.

Congresswoman Jean Schmidt is to be commended for her second trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, a danger-fraught excursion that many of her fellow legislators have yet to undertake. She cares about the troops, wants what's best for them and has never, ever claimed that "it's ok for them to sleep in their own urine and shower with rodents." To make such a classless, repulsive accusation reflects negatively on the writer and has nothing whatsoever to do with the good Congresswoman. Godspeed in your trip to the combat zones, Jean!

how many of congresswoman schmidt's critics have been to iraq? i'm guessing none of you, yet you'll still bash her left and right because clearly you know more about what is going on in iraq than she does....

PATHETIC!

Geez, another entourage going to Iraq on taxpayer's dime - this is ridiculous! Have a bipartisan film team do a mini documentary for all of them and stop wasting our money!

In fact, when will Congress step into the 21st century and join the technology evolution like corporate America and stop housing all elected federal officials in DC? It's ridiculous that our government is using tele-conferencing, the internet , etc to conduct it's business - join the modern world and stop wasting taxpayer money

While this, in all probability, a P.R. stunt, we have to agree with tnp: the Nazi Party, in that, any representatives visiting the troops is a GOOD THING !

Even though, it was a schmidt'y' trip and she quickly cut and ran !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

She's over there. Why can't they just keep her?

Hmm. I know I'm not in her district but, I wonder if she'd be kind enough to smuggle me back a kilo of opium under her flag-dress.

Thank you Jean for your dedication and commitment to our district. If only other representatives were more like you, this country might get back on the right track!

I'm so tired of Schmidts paid hacks/interns or whatever gushing all over her on these blogs. Anyone who knows her (and is not on her payroll) cant stand her. At least you could try and attempt to look like a regular voter for the sake of credibility. Then again Schmidt and her staff are not known for being subtle.

I'm so bloody sick and tired of Dems, COAST sycophants and Brinkman groupies badmouthing Congresswoman Jean Schmidt. She is liked and respected by enough people in the Second District that you can't beat her in an election, though you've tried, oh, how you've tried, four times in the past couple of years. Get your butt out the door and work for someone opposing her since you find her so objectionable. If you won't do that, then button up, suck it up and do that trick that all blowhards seem to be able to perform--open your big mouth so wide your face disappears. Is that subtle enough for you?

tnp = the Nazi Party !

Click those heels and goose-step with that pointed nose behind that elephant dung schmidt !

is that subtle enough for you ?

PATHETIC !

Congresswoman Jean Schmidt has earned the respect of a majority of the voters in Ohio-2. She's pro-life, pro-traditional family, pro-defense, anti-tax, pro-border security, pro-governmental fiscal responsibiity, pro-military, pro-tax cuts, pro-Social Security reform and favors a strong prosecution of the war against the thugs and murderers of Islamic Fascism. Her record of public service and charitable work in the Second District, where she has lived and worked all her life, is second to none. Her detractors raise lots of smoke and dust, but they don't seem to be able to defeat her come election time. And her supporters, like me, are gearing up to win yet another primary and another general next year. I can hardly wait.

I suspect this trip by Rep. Schmidt is pretty much a photo-op for home consumption. However, I reserve my criticism until we hear what she did, saw and said in Iraq. If she went outside the Green Zone, without a full military escort, I will praise her courage. If she praises the progress in Iraq, I will doubt her veracity. If she urges the US to stay the course, I will question her sanity. By the way, one could question this use of taxpayer money: if the purpose is to boost morale among the troops, wouldn't it be better to send Pamela Anderson?

Regarding my earlier post: Jean Schmidt did indeed visit Iraq and "clad in body armor and helmet" escorted by military Humvees, ventured out of the Green Zone. Not too brave, but certainly prudent.
Less prudent are her conclusions. Evidently only parroting General Petraeus, she states "we can succeed" in Iraq, she coldly describes the "spike" in miitary deaths as only the work of "fair weather insurgents," and curiously and rather pessimistically, she says US troops will be drawn down "if the surge is successful." How does "we can succeed" reconcile with "if the surge is successful"? Nowhere in Howard Wilkinson's column (the source of these quotes) does Rep. Schmidt discuss her meetings with the troops, what they said to her or how she boosted their morale. Nor does the column indicate any original thinking or investigation on her part. There is nothing, so far, in her comments that she couldn't have learned from watching FOX news. Did the taxpayers get their money's worth?

Anonymous at 2:41 am, your questions are legitimate, unlike many of the vitriolic anti-Schmidt clamorings found on this blog. Wilkinson is not, in my opinion, an objective reporter, assuming such a creature actually exists on the Enquirer staff, and I will wait a while to see what Jean says when she returns. Meanwhile, I do not see any conflict between her "we can succeed" and her "if the surge is successful" statements. Both are conditional assertions and seem to me to be logical equivalents.

TNP dude, there is no such thing as "Islamofascism". In fact, there is no such thing as fascism anymore.

Someone said: "If X calls Y a 'fascist' he means 'I hate Y' ".

Fascism was an Italian political movement of the early 20th century.

AOA, Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary weighs in on the definition with a bit more authority than you bring to bear. The word, "fascism," means "a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and race and stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition." When I attach "Islamo-" onto "fascism," I'm referring to the obvious fact that the thugs and murderers we are fighting around the world claim to be practitioners of Islam. I certainly hope this clears up your confusion about my use of the term, "Islamo-fascism."
BTW, I taught modern European history at a local college. Next?

Well, if you taught history then you should know better. Shame on you.

Mussolini weighs in on the definition with a bit more authority than you and the Far Leftist thug, Webster. LOL

Point is, there are really only one or two self-described facist regimes in history.
Since then, "fascist" much like barbarian, heathen and savage of old is what you call someone when you wage elective war on them.

And BTW, authoritarian regimes have been around long before Mussolini coined the word in 1919. So, speaking as a former history professor what do you call pre-fascist " fascist" regimes?

AOA, the point actually is that the word, "fascism," has a clear and definite meaning. And the use of the terms Islamic Fascist or Islamo-Fascist is perfectly legitimate and adequately descriptive. I'm sorry you seem to be having such a struggle with the semantics here. Perhaps you want the term, "Islamo-Fascist," (which I believe was first coined by radio talk show host, Michael Savage) relegated to the linguistic trashbin because John Edwards has declared the war against the thugs and murderers of Islamo-Fascism to be non-existent. But whatever your reason, be content to know that I will continue to use whatever terms appear to be appropriate and useful in commenting about current events on this and other blogs, whether or not you personally object to my terminology. You should do exactly the same thing from your point of view.

at 11:06 AM, June 03, 2007 Blogger Brah Coon said...

LOL It's not about semantics it's about reality - there is no impending " Islamofascist" invasion & conquest of the U.S.
To be blunt: it's total bullcrap and I think you know it.

You've been chanting this mantra to the point of monomania for at least 6 months now.

The only invasion I see happening consists largely of roman catholic latin americans.

Glad to know that you're a faithful reader of my comments.

The only one talking about an "invasion" is you. Conquest, however, is another matter, and the thugs and murderers apparently have been totally successful in bamboozling you into some kind of soporific stupor. You're in good company; there are lots of deluded leftists stewing in the same stupor. I'm going to be as nice here as I can, but there appears to be a vast crack in your understanding of the utter seriousness of the threat we face now and probably over the next 40 years from Radical Islam, or, as I prefer to call it, Islamo-Fascism. Their asymetrical style of warfare plus their absolute determination coupled with their unbridled hatred of the West, all this in the hands and hearts of seventh century throw-back barbarians who may have access to WMD adds up to this: we could lose this war against these thugs and murderers, particularly if our leaders begin to think like you.
THAT'S the reality here, dude, despite the sad fact that you can't or won't see it. And it gives you something in common with the likes of Pelosi, Reid, Edwards, Mrs. Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
