Dems: tax a "rare display of courage"

The Hamilton County Democratic Party sent out this statement commending commissioners Todd Portune and David Pepper for passing a county sales tax increase-- and criticizing Commissioner Pat DeWine, a Republican, for his "no" vote.

I have never been a huge DeWine fan, but I am now. Pepper and Portune are incredibly arrogant and have shown a total lack of respect for the ability of voters to make the right decision, whatever that may be.

According to Tim Burke, Portune & Pepper have solved the problems. In my way of thinking, then this city won't need Burke's big cow, the CityLink homeless mall.

Or perhaps we can look forward to Portune & Pepper hopping in bed with Burke on this horribly destructive scheme of congregating all the criminals in one spot for coffee, cake, showers, a shave & a haircut, all for free.

Let's perish this thought, but keep your eye on these 3 opportunists. Anything is possible.

The only statement I agree with in Burke's press release is the line about Republicans creating, then leaving problems for the Democrats. The problem with Portune and Pepper's "solution" is that it does not address crime. Crime will not go down if we build a bigger jail. Crime will go down if we invest in education and drug treatment (instead of incarceration). Portune and Pepper are guilty in this instance of thinking like the worst kind of Republicans--those in the Si Leis camp.

What's worse, this is a slap in the face to voters. If Portune and Pepper had instituted a half-penny sales tax to fund educational advances and treatment facilities in the county, the public would be a lot more receptive of this disgraceful insult to the voters.

I don't care who says it - I'm just glad it's being said - it took great courage to pass this tax and solve this problem - the commissioners are well aware that the public has a right to bring this to the ballot by referendum - they're merely making people seriously consider the issue by forcing them to exercise their right to challenge it.
If the public is successful in putting it on the ballot and then votes it down - the commissioners have down their duty to provide for our safety and the public has chosen not to allow it.
This folks, is grass roots, democracy in action - and win or lose - it is beautiful, not a scam by politicians .

Referendums are a right of the public - commissioners aren't denying the public a voice - they're only demonstrating their clear and unequivocal support for the program they have forwarded.
Let democracy reign -

Its amazing how the people that railed against the Ben Gals tax increase for Paul Brown Stadium (Odd Todd Opportune, et. al.), which was a tax the people actually voted on and approved, now institute a tax the people can't vote upon and approve. Can you say HYPOCRITE?

I am a strong advocate of Democratic ideals. I am a person who is proud to say that I am a Democrat. But, I've read this press release twice, and then I read it again, and I just don't understand how the Hamilton County Democratic Party continues to repeat itself on this tax issue.

Plain and simple, peope do not want their taxes raised. People are afraid that the Hamilton County Democrats will continue to raise taxes. That is why the Republicans have had such a grip on the reigns all these past 44 years.

We, as Democrats, need to learn this lesson. We will learn it by listening to people or we will learn it by losing elections. I think the first way makes the most sense.

...hear that noise? it is another person driving out of the county. but don't worry, it's a republican.

We've got to bit the bullet one way on another; either literally or by taxes to support a functional justice system.

We really need a regional approach to crime, schools, community services, etc... These are regional issues. Tackling them as a region is the most cost effective way to function as a society.

Congratulations to Portune and Pepper for doing in 5 months what dozens of GOP operatives costing millions of dollars could not do over 8 years: make Pat DeWine look like a principled conservative.

It's hardly surprising to see the local Democratic party supporting a huge tax increase. Raising taxes is what Democrats do best. And this batch took it a step farther with The White Democrats raising taxes immediately after the voters expressed their opinions at the polls that we didn't want this.

Leave the racial rhetoric to Nate, Jeff. This has nothing to do with Portune and Pepper being white. Ken Blackwell wasted plenty of taxpayer dollars (including doling out $80,000 in illegal bonuses after he was crushed by Ted Strickland), and he's not white.

If you’re going to talk tough on crime you’ve got to walk the walk. These guys talked it and walked it.

If you're going to talk tough on crime you've got do the walk too. DeWine talked it but Portune and Pepper walked it.

I hope these groups do put the issue on a ballot - just so they can see that the majority of Hamilton County residents "get it"

Instead of joining to gether to oppose everything - why don't people join together to put something that works forward?

Pay your fair share to address social problems and we'll all have a better quality oflife

Looks like Anon 1:48 doesn't "get it." Building a jail DOES NOT ADDRESS SOCIAL PROBLEMS. What the hell is wrong with you Portune and Pepper defenders? You're supposed to be Democrats. Let's fight crime and the social problems that cause it, not simply house criminals.

If you read their plan, anon, that's exactly what the plan is doing.

We finally lead the county bt a majority and the majority DEMS pull a bone head stunt by ignoring the will of the people. Instead of finding and building a conensus they go against everything this party stands for and make a decision that offends us all. I am so hurt to see all our hard work go down the drain for a decision that will surely be reversed.
