Portune recognized for walk

He may be sweaty, but Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune on this day was the picture of inspiration. So says Dr. Patrick Maynard, organizer of the Hope & Possibility Run, a 5K (3.1 mile) race May 5 in conjunction with the Flying Pig Marathon.

Here's what the group had to say:

Todd heard about the Hope & Possibility Run last November and immediately got involved to make the run a reality for Cincinnati. Todd has experienced first-hand what it means to have a disability, what it means to not let your disability define your life and how important events that promote inclusion are for Cincinnati. So, he not only helped organize and promote the event but he also challenged himself to complete his first organized run since his surgery.

Maynard thanked Portune Wednesday for his participation and gave the commissioner a plaque and a framed photo of from the race.

"Look at the eyes and you'll see the dedication," Maynard said, referring to the photo.

"Look at the sweat!" Portune exclaimed. Then on a more serious note: "It’s a fun, wonderful event. I was happy to play a small role in it. I hadn’t traveled that far on my own power since I was paralyzed four years ago. The event is all about people not being limited, but gearing up with hope that something can be done."

"Now we'll hide that picture!" he added.

Sorry Todd.

How any one can look at that picture, realize the pain, suffering and drive necessary to not just continue, but continue to serve the public, through out this tremendous challenge in his life and not have a deep feeling of respect and admiration...

The rest of us not facing the difficult disabilities many face, should count our blessings and know we can count on Portune.

Some critics call Todd "OpPortune" - I finally get it - Todd creates opportunity at every juncture in his life.

Sorry anon, but I evaluate my elected officials based on their performance in office, not their physical characteristics. Todd Portune is a disgraceful public official who disrespects the voters he's supposed to represent. I'll be inspired when he's voted out of office.

What's wrong Jeff , ya have a problem with people who work on behalf of the general public and not for big corporations?

You and your buddies not getting their regular cash infusions since real representatives of the people are in office here?

I prefer public officials who attempt to serve their constituents vs politicians like Portune and Pepper who give us the middle finger. We showed up in 2006 and convincingly gave them our opinion of the situation.

We might as well not bother voting in Todd Portune's kingdom. Our opinions don't count for anything, seeing how The White Democrats feel their 2 votes are the only ones that matter. I don't care whether Portune has to walk or crawl away in shame, we just need to vote him out of office.

Anyone else besides me notice that the Right-Wing Nutjobs have been off their message ever since Falwell died? Dude really must have been telling all those so-called moralists what to say and do.
