The Freedom Center gets $800,000

Jane Prendergast reports in tomorrow's Enquirer:

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center on Thursday got $800,000 from the city as part of an arts funding package that gave the same amount to three other museums and created a fund for smaller arts groups and special events.

The money is the first the city has given the Freedom Center since the riverfront museum and education center opened in 2004.

Center officials plan to use the money – for capital expenses, not operating costs – to help pay off the approximately $25 million in debt remaining from the $110 million construction expenses.

Councilman Chris Monzel did what he said for months he would do – vote against the center funding. Monzel, the only dissenter, had proposed spending the $800,000 instead to install speed humps on residential streets.“

Funding from the city will greatly help the Freedom Center continue to carry out its mission of inspiring modern-day action on behalf of freedom,” center spokesman Paul Bernish said after Wednesday’s vote.

THANK YOU Leslie Ghiz for having the strength and conviction to give the Freedom Center additional funding. She deserves a lot of credit.

What a waste of money. Chris has my vote next time around.

Chris Monzel - question. The Museum Center is okay - Art Museum and Music Hall too. You voted to give them $2.4MM. Why not the Freedom Center? What do you not like about the Freedom Center? It seems art history is okay - and Cincinnati history too. You like the Opera. But not Underground Railroad history? Strange.

The other organizations have been receiving tax dollars for years and years. This is the first time the Freedom Center has received funding since construction. It brings in a higher percentage of people from outside the State - and over 50,000 students visit each year. It's also at the heart of the Banks. Visit and you will agree, Council invested in a great place.

Monzel would rather have speed bumps. There is a leader for you. No courage - no substance.

It was a sad, sad couple of days here in Cincinnati. Today, most of council just crapped away $800,000 of city money down that toilet on the riverfront AND just yesterday most of our county commissioners crapped on the voters of Hamilton County and raised our taxes. I need more than Sheryl Crow's 1 square for this one.

If Monzel got his way, the Freedom Center would go away and there will be an empty shell on the Riverfront. Then he could move the Creationist museum there. Or he could do his buddy W proud and set up an oil rig there.

Yes, Leslie Ghiz deserve a lot of credit for doing what her owner John Pepper tells her to do. She should be a living exhibit in The Slave Center.

I think those other places are actually owned by the City of Cincinnati. The Freedom Center is nothing more than a giant shrine for rich white folks to atone for their white guilt and it is not owned by the city.

Maybe anonymous 7:33 could remind us who owns the 3 museums Monzel voted to fund. And I find it funny that someone who posts as "anonymous" is the one to question Monzel's courage. This from a person who can't even post under a username.

We could only be so lucky to have The Slave Center go away....and be replaced by condos or storefront shops that would bring people downtown and bring in tax revenues for the city. No, instead our great city leaders have completely squandered prime real estate on 3 big buildings that don't benefit from being on a riverfront.

I agree with Monzel on this one. The City owns the Art Museum, Music Hall and the Museum Center from what I hear, but the Freedom Center is a privately owned entity. They said they wouldn't ask for public funds. If it is so wonderful let the private sector fund it. Cant Pepper get all his rich buddies to chip in. I would think they could write enough checks to cancel the debt.

What we find ironic, in our white bread world, is that:

“nappy-headed hoes.”

is heard in the black community, not the white community.

This is the first time we heard a "white" use that phrase, but, it is certainly not the first time we have heard the statement !

Why is that ?

Community pride begins at home !

Perhaps, there is some house cleaning to do ?

Don't be offended by terms utilized within your own home-boy hood !

What are we getting all "jacked-up" about ?

"RESPECT" begins at "HOME" !

Should we follow the principle:

Do as I say, not as I do ?

Sounds, "bush whacko" to us !

PATHETIC !

Sounds like our surgically neutered bold typist could be a racist.

Hey, looks like yet another in a long line of examples where Leslie Ghiz is on the right and winning side, and chrissy monzel is on the wrong and losing side.

Start dusting off the "Resume Writing for Dummies" Bradford.

like they needed that money!

800,000 Dollars for ANY of these is an improper use of tax money when there are so many other problems. Is it any wonder that people have moved out of the city?...
