Schmidt vs. Wulsin in the $$ race

Democrat Victoria Wulsin announced earlier today that she plans to challenge Rep. Jean Schmidt in the 2nd Congressional District again next year.

If that's the case, both candidates will have to raise a boatload more money than they currently have in their respective campaign accounts, according to campaign finance reports filed recently with the Federal Election Commission.

According to Schmidt's report, filed yesterday, the Miami Township Republican has raised $20,065 during the first three months of this year. But after paying expenses, Schmidt was left with just $17,118 in the bank.

But her campaign owes nearly $32,000 for legal services ($26,650 to the Squire Sanders & Dempsey law firm and $5,328 to the Strauss & Troy law firm, of which her former campaign manager Joe Braun is a partner). Schmidt also has yet to repay herself $277,150 funds she loaned her campaign.

Wulsin also has a meager campaign balance. The Indian Hill doctor started the year with about $47,900 in the bank, but she raised just $1,867 from Jan. 1 to March 31.

After paying for office expenses and reimbursing herself $37,500 in money she had loaned her campaign, Wulsin is left with about $4,350 in the bank - but no debts to anyone other than herself. To date, she is only out $1,500 that she loaned the campaign.

Here's how they compare:

Schmidt:
- Raised last 3 months: $20,065
- Cash on hand as of March 31: $17,118
- Debts: $309,150

Wulsin:
- Raised last 3 months: $1,867
- Cash on hand as of March 31: $4,350
- Debts: $1,500

Excellent. The second district will now have even more time to realize what a complete nutcase Vic Wulsin is.

WOW - Schmidt is going to have to sell alot of votes to just break even.

I think voting for someone who is that far in debt is downright stupid - you know what she's got to do and with the make up of Congress she'd sell her twin to get in office for a new term.

Wonder if Schmidt will call for the early release of Jack Abramoff. He seemed like a good source for Republican donations in the past.

Does this debt make her a dead beat congressperson?

The Enquirer's political reporting is so lacking.

You all focus on the money raised too much and not on issues.

Wow -- guess you didn't notice that the majority of this debt is to HERSELF. I think voting for someone like Wulsin (who hides her participation in unethical AIDS experiments) is downright stupid. Wonder why Rev. Strickland didn't appoint her to anything in Columbus? Maybe because doctors don't yet have unions.

WOW OVER $309,000 IN DEBT! We should watch for campaign contributions from these guys:

Schmidt said she supports a study looking at whether the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion plant in Piketon should be used to temporarily store and recycle spent nuclear fuel rods.

WOULD JEAN REALLY CONSIDER PLACING THE LIVES OF HER CONSTITUENTS IN HARMS WAY FOR FINANCIAL REASONS? LET'S HOPE NOT, BUT SEEING HER WILLING TO SUPPORT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S POLICY OF SENDING OUR TROOPS INTO ANOTHER NATION'S CIVIL WAR WITHOUT PROPER BODY ARMOR AND THEN CUTTING VETERAN BENEFITS, YOU HAVE TO WONDER.

To Anon 11:39:
If you would simply spend a little time researching -- you would know that Wulsin and your good governor, Strickland, wrote letters in support of the nuclear storage facility. Congresswoman Schmidt was in support of a feasibility study for this economically depressed area. Unfortunately, the Enquirer smear machine is about as enquiring as you!

Wulsin has some dirty little secrets. It'll be interesting to see if the Enquirer can dig them up or not. I won't hold my breath, but Victoria should.

Those are some seriously poor numbers for an incumbent Member of Congress. Pitiful numbers from a pitiful Congressman. Mean Jean seems to have turned off just about everyone she can including the rich folks who love to throw money at Congressmen to maintain access. She is doing everything she possibly can to give this heavily R seat to the Democrats.

When will Republicans clean out our own house? We need to replace Mean Jean with a Republican who won't do everything possible to lose the seat to a Democrat.
