A Republican Senate?

Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota is recovering "without complication" from surgery for bleeding in his brain, caused by a condition called congenital arteriovenous malformation, the attending physician of the United States Capitol said this morning.

Johnson, who will turn 60 later this month, is up for re-election in 2008. Democrats now control the Senate, 51-49. But South Dakota’s Republican Gov. Mike Rounds would appoint a replacement for Johnson if he left office, which could tip power back to the GOP because Vice President Dick Cheney could vote to break a 50-50 tie.

Reaction from local senators and White House press secretary Tony Snow, a Cincinnati native:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Tim and Barbara and their entire family during this very difficult time. My wife, Fran, and I wish Tim a full recovery," said Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio.

"Janet and I have been praying, and urge all Ohioans to pray for Senator Johnson's speedy recovery. Tim has been my co-chairman on the Ethics Committee for the last two years - he is a good man and a good friend," said Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio.

"I hope he gets better and it sounds like he is," said Sen.-elect Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who saw Johnson and spoke with him at an event in Washington earlier this week. Brown has been assigned to the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, of which Johnson is a senior member. Additionally, Johnson's wife, Barbara, has been assigned to mentor Brown's wife, Connie, he said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Senator Johnson and his family during this very difficult time. I consider him to be one of my better friends here in the Senate and I wish him a full and immediate recovery. Mary and I are praying for him," said Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky.

"Our prayers are with Senator Johnson," said Snow. "Look, he's a great guy and it's one of these things where everybody is concerned. And our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, his staff, his colleagues."

Gannett News Service reporters Chuck Raasch and Mike Madden contributed to this blog post.

This is tragic. A horrific coincidence. I wish him a speedy recovery. In unrelated news, some people say that the VP has perfected the Tesla 'Death Ray'.

"A Republican Senate?"

What a sicko wRong wingnut whacko fishwrap !

A man suffers a tragedy and all they can think about is:

Can a "culture of corruption" governor help them steal power again ?

PATHETIC !

HAD ENOUGH, VOTE DEMOCRAT 2007 !

I wouldn't put it past Cheney to instruct the CIA to create a "medical problem" for Senator Johnson just so the Repigs could at least hold on to some degree of power in the Senate.

IMPEACH BUSH & CHENEY NOW!

2 Democrat Senators killed in a plane crash (Wellstone and Carnahan).

A Senate Democrat with a 30-year reputation of being an upstanding public servant suddenly railroaded out of office for borrowing things for one night from one guy he had one dinner with (Torricelli).

A perfectly healthy Democrat Senator has an extremely rare brain hemmorage.

All of these "accidents" happen with Repugnicants in the White House and control of the Senate in the balance. Coincidence? We think not.

The facist slimeballs were successful in titling the Senate their way with Wellstone but stymied the other two times.

A speedy recovery for Johnson, then he can launch an investigation of the criminals who did this to him.

Give me a break!!
This is a tragic event that occurred the senator and I hope that he will get through this medical situtation and serve out his term and more.

However to the person who posted that all republicans can think about is getting the power back. I have not heard one republican talk about it even when they were asked about it. It was the media that within minutes of the stroke being reported that started talking about what would happen if he could not finish his term. The media is the one that is the one that brought this up.

You took a bad cheapshot at repubicans on this. Way to spin it to make it look like the republicans are the bad ones in this.
Fact is that the media is the one bringing up questions about what happens if he can't serve out his term. The republicans did not bring it up.
Don't say the Right wingers brought this up. That is just twisting the facts so you can shoot off your mouth.

As repugnant as it sounds - the Republican Governor would and will use his power to take control of the Senate with a promise from the Republican Party that he will have a good job with them after he gets voted out of office next time he is up for re-election.

For the first time - opposite of the Shivo case - we will have republicans (if they aren't already) lobbying to pull the plug on this man

I predict they will name a Republican, absent a miracle, and it will be the death of the Republican Party.

I also predict that if this man is as bad off as it sounds - the republican party will take action to remove him from his seat.

This party has lied, stolen and contributed to the deaths of nearly 3000 soldiers and hundreds of thousands of iraqi civilians - do you really think the wheels of corruption have been halted by some meager level of decency at this point?

Sadly, I do not.

We will see the darkest side of the republican party

Pray for a miracle to spare us this repugnant event and for the life of another human being, not a politician

Yah, Don't let the folksy Frist facade fool 'ya. Behind it lurks the bedside manner of a Dr. Mengele! Now, The VP. That dude is just plain creepy! Like Uncle Fester with Bell's Palsy ( look on the google). No merciful heart nor serene mind can produce and hold a SNARL like that! Nothing good is going on in his head or soul! Well, in my humble opinion anyway. Others may beg to differ. LOLOLOL

While in med school Frist "adopted" cats from the SPCA so he could "practice" on them. Let's just say the experiments didn't require that he actually buy any cat food.

Much ado about nothing. The news media was really disgusting pouncing all over this.

Here now, it looks like he will make a full recovery, and the news media had him dead and all they could talk about was the "balance of power" in the Senate.

Disgusting, simply disgusting.

A new low.

No, "Anon.," it is the Right (sic, Wrong) Wing media aka Faux News and conservative/Neanderthal talk radio which first crowed about a possible change in Senate control "if only..."
Disgusting, beneath contempt and of course to be expected from ghouls like Roger Ailes, Brent Bozell, Hannity and the assorted media puppets of Norquist, Rove (where ya been, Karl Roverer?) and the big-money fascists like Mellon Scaife and his co-conspirators.

I heard that the new security measures at the U.S. Capital building not only include Xraying everyone who enters, but also MRI and CAT scans. True? I dunno. BUT ... just imagine how the info obtained from these scans could be exploited. A * ZAP* in just the right place on just the person could ... ( gulp! ) well I shudder to think. These are indeed very strange times. ;P

Alter or abolish, just wait until 2008 when the federal government announces that all U.S. citizens will be required to have a National ID Card. Then the next thing will be to get implanted with a microchip so we can make sure we can track you and that you aren't a terrorist.

Dude, I have counter measures in place against the ID chip implants. They already have them for dogs and cats, right? So, I'll just switch chips with the poodle down the street. I figure by the time we are in the 3rd year of the new " War on Poodles" my revolutionary ambitions will have been realized. Get me? hahahah

Alter, speaking of 2008, you do know that ther won't even BE an election, right? Bush & Co. will impose martial law so they can stay in ppower.

In case you are wondering just why no nig-name Republican is tossing his or hat into the ring, and the few who are either are long-shots or are moderates not part of the BushCo inner circle.

Some of you are either stupid or love to throw crap out there just to be saying something.

MRIs and CAT scans if anyone has had one, take between 30 minutes and an hour. You also have to be still for the entire time. No they are not Scanning people with these machines. Nice try conspiracy guy.

Oh I have to tell you that I saw on all Media talk about the Senator being ill and what would happen if he died. It was on all stations from NBC, to CNN, to MSNBC, to Fox. No it was not the right wing media only bring this subject out. Quit the lying and exaggerating. It really does make you look like an idiot.

The title of this post is disgusting. A man is now recovering from a serious surgery and all this fascist rag of a paper can do is title the article "A Republican Senate." Give me a break. This is a tragedy, and we should all wish the senator well, despite our political leanings.

Hey 3:46

There are medications for people that are have delusions like you are having.

Your last comments show just how far gone you are and make all of your posts mean that much less.(not that they ever make sense anyway, or say anything other than calling people names) When you prove to people just how far gone you are it now lets us all see the true you. You take peoples good points they make and then criticize them. You don't even really respond to their points you just call names. I guess it shows that you have no arguement against their points.

Example- Someone points out that MRIs' and CATscans are not instant, they take half an hour. You quote him and then have nothing agianst his point. Then you just call him names. Wow you are really good!! NOT!!!! Why don't you make a point.

I think it's time the internets be regulated, tightly controlled and monitored for hate speech, name calling, delusions of normalcy and bad grammar!

I have a delusion that you would be able to tell what a typo is. Wow you are so cool. You can point out a typo and then talk badly about someone.

Grow up and stop being such a jerk. You are such a big man to point out a grammer mistake and then make fun of someone.

I can tell if you do that to people, that you have no real compassion for anyone if they are not 100% on your side.
