Habemus manager!

Councilman Cecil Thomas demonstrates the connection between his footwear and his vote for City Manager.

Wednesday's vote to confirm Milton Dohoney Jr. as Cincinnati's 14th city manager was probably the most important vote cast to date by the newly reconstituted City Council. And given the lengthy debate that preceded it, the vote could set an historic precedent about who has the right to hire the city's chief executive.

Characteristic of 801 Plum St., it was an event with several sideshows. Enquirer photographer Michael E. Keating captured two of the more oddball moments of the spectacle.

First, Democratic Councilman Cecil Thomas hoisted his sockless wingtips above the council dais to demonstrate that Dohoney "did indeed knock my socks off." (He did not, thankfully, do an impersonation of Nikita Kruschev.)

Then, Avtar S. Gill -- known around City Hall as "the hat guy" for the political statements he makes with his colorful handmade baseball caps -- registered his approval with an impromptu sign.

Gill, a 65-year-old downtown resident, said he wanted to write "Habemus Manager" on the sign -- a reference to the Latin phrase used to announce the election of a new pope -- but was afraid the five non-Catholics on City Council might not get the reference.

Avtar S. Gill holds a sign celebrating the vote.

I've seen the hat guy around before. Nice guy, he just smells a bit. That said, he should have gone with the "Habemus Manager" sign.

The five non-catholics on Council: presumably Bortz, Cole, Ghiz, Tarbell, and Thomas, are smart enough to figure it out.

I believe Jim Tarbell would have gotten the reference - He attended St. Xavier, and came from a Catholic family.

Someone blogged that they weren't happy that Tarbell was representing Cincinnati in Nancy, France because they were afraid that everyone would think that all Cincinnatians wore funny Top Hats.

So is this guy an atheist too?

As a Protestant, when I first came to Cincinnati I was mildly shocked at the lurid-sounding "Saint Peter-in-Chains" Cathedral. But I got over it and I guess Tarbell did, too.

I have a question: After 7 months the most important vote is the vote on the city mananger?

Can ANYONE identify one Mallory initiative that seriously helps the city?

Is anyone else tired of the family? Dad is at the council meeting talking to the empowerment zone president presumably about bad son Dale. But none of the Mallory's want to talk about the empowerment zone to the press or the public...eventhough it is a city initiative.

And Mark is waiting for the city to "bottom out"...Won't be long now, mayor!

No, the most significant vote was the one they took to support an immigration reform bill in Congress. :)

What I find striking is that someone realizes "Mallory's dad" is talking to the Empowerment Zone President inside of Council Chambers - obvious, you're sitting in council -- wonder who that is? Could it be someone angry at the Milton Dohoney vote. In the Public 's view its pretty clear -- if the powers at be do not get what they want, they get bitter -- and it's not healthy for our City, and your organization. Focus on serving the Public vs. "being self-serving"

Good to see Mr. Korte blogging on City Hall again. He has a way of gently poking fun of the place without the personal attacks you see elsewhere. I still miss his column.

Well KKKorte is going to have to think twice before he violates the civil rights of anonymous free speakers !!

Publishing a company name in an attempt to libel the company and individual because he wanted to toe the party line and label them by breaching their right to privacy and pulling a primary vote at the BOE !!

The wRong wing fishwrap will have to defend his actions when that civil rights and libel claim is filed against him and every member of the hamilton county central committee !!

I hear it will be a multi-million dollar claim !!

By August 1 Cincinnati will have had an "interim" city manager for full year. No wonder City Hall is rudderless.

And the truly ironic thing is that the "interim" city manager was probably the most qualified person for the job -- yet apparently Mallory never even considered him. Why?

Who is this nutjob who keeps polluting every thread with irrelevant and nonsensical rantings about the "w(R)ong wing fishrap" and the Ku Klux Klan?

He did not want or apply for it !

Yeah wrong wing is annoying but sometimes he's correct. Rager is on record as saying he did not want the city manager job.

I think it's clear that supporters for Pepper for mayor are the ones who constantly bash Mallory, and also are likely the ones who drag Dale Mallory into every post even if it's nowhere near the topic.

pepper supporters should focus on getting that "what happened to all his positions in the 1990s phil heimlich" out of office.

I still think the city would run more effectively with an executive mayor, at whose desk the buck stops. As things exist in Cincinnati, it is run by a three headed monster, each head blaming the other, and as a result, very little happens.
In Milwaukee in the 1970s, when there was a STRONG mayor and a STRONG police department, man o man, it was the best run municipality, and the best kept secret in America.
In Cincinnati, just too many chefs in the kitchen. NO large organization can flourish without a strong leader. I just don't look for any improvements in our city's life until the structure of government is rearraneged.

Truth is always annoying to wRong wing nuts !!

he's correct

Gender bias or someone doesn't know schmidt !!

Wrong wing is sometimes correct, but it's never easy to tell since I've stopped reading anything written exclusively in bold. If wrong wing is reading this, let me offer some friendly advice. Stop trying to be clever, quit writing in bold, and stop telling people they're "full of Schmidt." That last one in particular was never funny, and stopped being funny even to those with limited IQs months ago. Wrong wing would be better off sticking to the facts and leaving things at that.
