Cranley gets Blue Dog support

The Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 37 conservative and moderate Democrats in Congress who focus on fiscal responsibility, announced Friday that they’ve endorsed Democrat John Cranley for Congress.

Cranley, a Cincinnati city councilman who has balanced the city’s budget as finance chairman, is challenging Rep. Steve Chabot, a Republican, in the 1st District.

Cranley has pledged not to accept a congressional pay raise until the current federal budget deficit is erased and supports restoring pay-as-you-go budget rules.

Here’s what the co-chairmen of the Blue Dog PAC had to say about Cranley:

Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Fla., said: “For too long, Congress has been indulging an addiction to deficit spending while the Blue Dogs have been trying to put a stop to it. John Cranley knows that our economy cannot sustain these structural deficits, and he'll work with us to institute PAYGO spending policies and common sense budget reforms that will bring our books back into the black.”

Rep. John Tanner, D-Tenn., said: “The Blue Dogs are proud to endorse John Cranley as the next congressman for the 1st District of Ohio. His leadership capabilities, his values and his fiscally responsible commitment to fighting for a balanced budget make him qualified to be a leader in the United States House of Representatives. We look forward to working together with John Cranley to find practical, solution-oriented answers to the questions facing our country.”

Cranley also has the support of "Orange Dog" Democrats.

Those are the Democrats who want to dis-lodge Chabot from his seat by any means necessary.

Cincinnati and all working Ohioans are much better served by a Democratic Repesentative in Congress.

Republicans in Congress mean just one thing: rubber stamp whatever is sent down the pike by a Republican Executive branch.

Chabot was especially good at this: he signed off on anything placed in front of him by his big business/big lobbyist friends.

Like Jack Abramoff.

Cranley also has the support of Republicans sick of Chabot turning his back on the people who put him there.

Chabot breaks about every pledge he ever made... Balanced Budgets... Term Limits... Globetrotting around the world...

Some of these career politicians will say anything to stay in office.

Everything is falling in place for Cranley. Victory is coming nearer and nearer every day. When was the last time an opponent had this much support this early on? It was Chabot, and it was 1994. It was his first election. This election will be his last.

Cranley !

Go Cranley! Kick some ChaButt!

This midterm election year is so important in so many ways. Not only for the Ohio 1st and 2nd CDs, but also the Ohio 18th, the Illinois 6th and 8th...Dozens of others.....It's just like so many regimental flags on the field of battle....like a great Army of the Potomac ready to march on Washington and save the Capitol from the rebels who are now in control.

We can only hope that some of the Old Guard, that is, previous Democrats who have held the Congressional seat for the western part of Cincinnati, are doing enough to help J Cranley.

Because whatever it is that they're doing, it's not enough. Some of those old goats, who may not remember what they had for breakfast, still should be able to recall the days when Democrats controlled the House Committee structure, and all that it meant.

So they need to share those insights, and those contacts, with Cranley, who is well established and popular in Cincinnati, but who doesn't yet have all the contacts in DC, nor does he have a taxpayer provided staff of 18 to 20 persons or more to help out.

And that's not even considering the financial support that the Grand Old Party can provide for their incumbent.

So -- Old Guard...put your boots on and saddle up.

contrary to anon 10:44, the oldtimers have done maybe too much for Cranley...like convince him that tired old so-called "issues" - like "pay as you go" budgeting and "salary give-backs" are the way to go.

Hackett, for all of his faults, was able to get national attention because of his passion and his personal involvement with the Iraq war.

Cranley apparently has no idea what to say about national issues. How do we know? Because he hasn't said a darn thing!

And as for old-timers helping, the former Mayor's input is quite clear: he gave Cranley part of a "secret report," financed by the business community, about why Cincinnati need ed those 100 extra policemen. The Enquirer said this report was not available to the other members of council.

And just then, when a councilman-who-is-also-running-for-higher office would have released a press release criticizing Mayor Malory's shenanigans over the hiring of a City Manager, he lets a colleague do it. (Leslie Ghiz)

Clearly this was pre-arranged. He preferred not to criticize the Mayor directly, and possibly unnecessarily alienate some potential "minority" supporters - so he lets Ghiz do it.

I say, why let that broad have any free publicity? Cranley should have issued a press release criticizing Mallory -- and he should also issued one about the need to hire more police officers.

Ghiz -- and whoever helped her - didn't even issue a decent press release. It isn't proper to use language like "blast" someone, especially when it's the Mayor and he obviously feels so besieged that needs a personal bodyguard.

Cranley, Ghiz, or whomever...should simply have issued a press release "criticizing" the Mayor -- for acting like a Tin Horn Dictator.

His hiring of Milton Dohoney deserved forthright critcism -- of the kind Jeff Berding gave us in his editorial. The hiring of a city manager is one of the most important tasks the City Council will face. Did they face it? No - they let the Mayor with the Napoleonic Complex do as he pleases.

All you have to do is take one look at the photos of Milt Dohoney to know his selection has "crash and burn" all over it. But that you can find out for yourselves, in a year or two.

Cranley either has a feel for national politics and deserves to go Congress or he doesn't. He either has an opinion on Iraq or he doesn't....remember he is only 32 years old and doesn't remember Vietnam the way the rest of us do.....the way that it went on and on and on....yes, "we're going to leave there as soon as the Vietnamese are ready to take on the commies themselves...."

Cranley is 32 years old. Does he need help from the Political Graveyard?

Anon above (since he 'has no real contacts in DC')makes it sound like he needs for his mother, Susan, to take him on some kind of educational field trip to DC, where they can tour the Smithsonian and see an exhibit about Atomic Energy, then perhaps go the Freer Gallery and look at the Asian Art, and then maybe go have lunch at someplace historic like The Old Ebbitt Grill. Perhaps she will even let him have a glass of beer.

Old-timers stay out of it! You've lost enough elections for us as it is.

If Cranley is truly a "Blue Dog" moderate Democrat then why did he endorse one of the most liberal candidates ever to run in the Ohio 2nd earlier this year? He had more conservative candidates to choose from but he never even bothered to talk to them.

The other candidates either didn't have a camera pointed at him or they didn't throw money at his campaign.

Beware of the sheep in wolf's clothing.

it's a good thing someone is pointing out how Chabot keeps blowing up the federal deficit while pocketing raises for himself.
Chabot is such a hypocrite and hasn't accomplished anything he said he was going to do.

at 8:24 PM, June 26, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

i'm ready to hear more on the issues too. we should put pressure both campaigns to have many televised/ radio/ internet debates.

this is an important time to say the least. and as much as i want to know that Cranley has to say, i don't know what Chabot has done either.

with a bunch of debates we'd all be better off.

HERE HERE TO DEBATES!!! I WANT TO HEAR CHABOT EXPLAIN WHY HE GOT US INTO THIS IRAQ WAR AND GAVE THOSE BILLIONS TO RICH OIL COMPANIES!! MAYBE FOR THE SAME REASON?!!! CHABOT IS A GREEDY BUSHIE OIL MAN!!

at 9:29 PM, June 26, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you aren's an Orange Dog Democrat you either have a major axe to grind or are a big Chabothead. Either way, the result is the same -- attack Cranley and you get more Chabothead.

But why would anoyone want more Chabothead?... all bald, with a make believe combover for a hairdo...

much like Chabothead the representative...

a lot of nothing with bullcrap PR oiled up on top (of nothing).

We don't need anymore Chabothead.

Chabothead has gotten rich enough off us. More Chabothead means more war and more poor.

Just say "no" to more rubber-stamped "made in DC" Chabothead!

at 10:55 PM, June 26, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anon 7:26 sounds an awful lot like perpetual whiner Jim Parker, or Republican in Dems clothing Jeff Sinnard. Reals Democrats are more interested in defeating Chabot than bitching about or for losers like Parker and Sinnard.

To: Cranley Campaign
From: The Political Graveyard

We're not sure how we got dragged in to this, but yes, by all means, if you have some former Democratic Congressmen to help you, why then let them!

It's true that "some of those old goats may not remember what they had for breakfast," but all former Members of Congress have at least one or two tricks up their sleeves.

One of them is called "the Members Dining Room," a privilege of all former members of Congress, and we saw that at least three of them attended your recent "gala" fundraiser at that theater downtown which you restored.

So that gives you at least three invitations to breakfast, lunch, or what have you, right inside the Capitol, and they can introduce you around.

Sincerely,

Oren Harris
Isidore Dollinger
Torbert MacDonald
Morgan M Moulder

Former Members of Congress

Is this really news? A bunch of liberal democrats pretending to be moderates endorsing another liberal democrat who pretends he's a moderate.

Maybe the Enquirer will write another endorsement article when John Cranley, the same meathead who helped start the riots in Cincinnati by his inaction, is endorsed by Stonewall Cincinnati and Planned Parenthood.

I feel bad for all those that live in the City of Cincinnati. When Todd Portune resigned his council seat he wanted to appoint someone who had actually lived in the city, not some kid named Cranley with a big head just back from his university days in Massachusetts. But the Cranley family of doctors has money, so they must have persuaded the Democrats that Johnny, even though he never had a real job, was suited for a council seat.

Too bad for Cincy residents. Besides the riots, Cranley has watched as thousands of residents fled to safety in the suburbs or other towns. Drugs and violence are rampant, yet council does nothing except talk about adding more cops every election year.

I wish they'd get a clue. A once proud city is is drowning in gunfire and no one cares.

With all due respect... NOBODY called me a loser on election day. So don't YOU do it anonomously now on some political blog.

If you haven't checked the numbers, I had a 900% (nine hundred percent) improvement from 2005 to 2006. That was accomplished with almost zero cash. I EARNED the votes of the people who believed in me. You see, I love the people of Southern Ohio. They are the greatest people on earth and when I talked with them, they knew it was true. Even Paul Hackett's campaign manager called me on election night and, in a stunned and startled voice, told me that I was winning in the 2nd Congressional District.

Nobody knows what I have been doing these last several weeks. But I'll tell you one thing. I've got my life back. I spend time with my wife and children. I've had several really positive things happen at work. I've helped alot of people with the problems that they face in their daily lives. There was a man who, in his dying days, voted for me earlier this year. I think about him often. One of the last things he ever did was vote for me because I believed in him. He lead a good and honorable life.

As for John Cranley, I hope he wins. America needs a change for the better. I only hope that he understands that the position of United States Congressman is about alot more than money or fame. It is hard work for those rare few individuals who truly care about America and the rest of the world. People who can overcome greed, selfishness, arrogance and ignorance. People who are willing to stand up for what is right despite all adversity. Those are the people who deserve to be the true public servants of our society. Throughout history, every now and then, we get a good one. Sometimes it is a Congressman who never put his name on some big fancy piece of legislation or who doesn't perpetually try to live in the public spotlight. Often, it's a person in the background who makes things happen. Without glory. Without fame. These are the true public servants of our society. They make the world a better place.

As for Victoria Wulsin, she won fair and square. I respect her. She is a wonderful person. She is dedicated to her family. She has faith in God and in the people who she is trying to serve. I will be proud to cast my vote for her in November.

To make a long story short. If you want to call me a name, do it to my face. I just might be in Cincinnati on Sunday. A friend invited me to attend a public event to be held in her honor. Or I might just spend the day with my family. But don't do it anonomously on some political webpage.

Nonetheless, I gave a year of my life to the people of Southern Ohio and fought to make the world a better place. I've received dozens of notes and letters from people who I never thought even noticed stating that they were impressed with my efforts. One politcal writer for whom I have the absolute greatest respect called me the hardest working candidate that he has seen in over 30 years. I'm only 38 years old. I never intendced to run for Congress until I was in my 50s. Instead, I did it twice in one year.

So until you can stand where I have and shake people's hands on country roads and city streets. And look them in the eye and ask them to believe that you are working your heart out to make their lives better. Until you can say that you have done that while setting your entire life aside. Please don't ever try to ridicule me publicly again. I am a good and decent person and I gave my life to almost 650,000 people who live in Southern Ohio for more than a year. My sacrifices during that time were significant. I hardly saw my kids. I ate while I drove and slept at reststops for ten minutes at a time while driving hundreds of miles at night after working all day to support my family. And I did it all for you.

And I would have been a great Congressman. I hope that John Cranley can show such character if he should ever win. I know that Victoria Wulsin will...

Thank you to the incredible people of Southern Ohio. I am lucky to be one of you.

Your friend and true public servant,

Jim Parker
Former Democratic Candidate for US Congress
Southern Ohio - 2nd District - 2005 and 2006

Mr Parker,

You are much too thin-skinned for all of this. The blogger who mentioned your name only made an off-hand remark and you follow up with a huge 10,000 word essay decrying it.

You can't be in politics and be that defensive about little things.

We have a representative government, not a direct democracy, and having a "professional" rather than an "amateur" is important.

Cranley ran for Congress in 2000, did surprisingly well for a newcomer. When he didn't succeed he followed it up with campaigns for local office, developed a name and a record of achievement, and now he is poised to make a really serious, and we can only hope, successful....run for Congress.

What's wrong with that approach? You said yourself that you are only 38 years old. Why not follow-up with a campaign for a local office?

Paul Hackett generated a lot of nationwide excitement....when he fell short, the logical next move was a rematch but he chose to over-reach and try for a Senate seat. It was an amateur's mistake, not a professional's. What's surprising for a military man, is that it was also a logistical error: his ambitions exceeded his stamina and his supplies.

So, Mr Parker....all is not lost. Just regroup and re-think your approach to winning elective office.

Thanks for the response. I'm not running for anything. As a matter of fact, the last thing I wanted to do was be a politician.

I just wanted to save Medicare for the baby-boom generation before they see the day when their out of pocket expense for healthcare each year exceeds the price of a new car. The clock is ticking.

I wanted to fight for tax cuts for the middle class because they have been getting the short end of the stick all the way around for years.

And I wanted to end the war in Iraq and keep American soldiers out of Iran for obvious reasons.

Have a nice day.

Jim Parker

You are right ! Parker is too thin shined for the blog. I advised him against posting, responding on blogs and he not only ignored. but, rebelled.

I was only looking out for him. I advised him that someone in his campaign should fight the blog battle, but, Jim knew best.

Every candidate worked hard in that primary, so Jim is not alone.

Yes after his hometown Pike county came in, Jim for a second was the leader.

Yes, Jim worked hard, but, he seems more interested in Parker the former candidate than Jim the family man.

It is time to move forward.

Jim, why not sign your rhetoric Jim Parker, citizen. That would appeal more to the general public instead of the 5,500 people who voted for you in the 650,000 people you claim to work so hard for.

Face it Jim, you were in it for Jim, period.

You still can't bring yourself to sign off unless there is the word congressman associated with your name.

Politically speaking Jim, you are a loser, but, to keep you from self destructing in failure we shall in the future refer to you as voter challenged !

One more thing, since you're discussing my potential candidacy for elective office. I do not truly believe that we have a representative government. What we have is a divided, bought and paid for United States Congress that couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag.

They are lost because they have sold their souls to the highest bidder. Oil, Insurance and Pharamceutical companies purchased the United States Congress long ago.

If our government was truly representative of most people's interests, then we wouldn't be watching Jean Schmidt on C-Span for more than a year now...

There is way too much hatred being spewed within the Hamilton County Democratic Party.

No wonder we lose so many elections in Cincinnati. No wonder we have been losing there for so many years.

My internet posting days are over. You have read my FINAL message.

None of this was ever about me. It was about a better future for millions of people. Good luck.

Jim Parker

To Mr Parker (even though this blog is supposed to be about support for John Cranley)

Again, why let a little ribbing get to you? Why let rejection get to you? You have obviously never held a job in "sales" where you learn that every "no" is just one step closer to "yes."

So go recharge your batteries. Actually go to DC, to the Smithsonian, the Freer Gallery (home of "Whistler's Mother"), to Old Ebbitt's Grill. DC is the most wonderful place.....and just about all of its attractions are free.

Go online to today's New York Times and read the article by the columnist David Brooks about DC Museums. It's about the renovations just completed on the American Portrait Gallery.

America does have something special to offer the world, and our Founders knew they were engaged in not only a revolutionary war but a new and exciting experiment called representative government.

The bill of rights and the Constitution itself has been battered of late......but it's not the end of things.

So - onward and upward!

AND GO CRANLEY!!! KICK some CHABUTT!!

I am the Anon poster of July 3... got to this string of commentary a little late so I thought I'd just throw in a little irrelevant aside.

The picture really just reminded of something from a while back. I was working for a woman of about my mother's age. She herself had once worked for US Representative Dante Fascell, the "Father of the Freedom Act."

Her succinct appraisal of him was "he was a skirt chaser."

I wanted to laugh, but her serious tone of voice made me realize it was better not to ask any follow-up questions.

Like Cranley, Fascell was a handsome man with a great smile and twinkling eyes. He also might have had "Presidential qualities,"

... but he wasted them by pinching fannies.

Well, for years they claimed Cranley was gay because he was single. He is now engaged, so, I guess the gay tag is gone and now he is a fanny pincher !!

Since you are late again and obviously don't have a clue about Cranley let me enlighten you !!

The only thing Cranley has been guilty of is:

pinching the tax payer pennies !!

He is noted for keeping the wRong wing wacko nuts from wasting taxpayer funds on their spend now, pay later crony projects !!

Just thought you would appreciate the facts since your so endearing to good ol's mum !!

just thought i'd let you know that i saw cranley at the st rita festival yesterday and told him that i didn't trust him since he lives on the west side, he's a closeted republikkan, and is only going to do what the big corporations tell him what to do. Good dialogue but I still don't trust him.
