Who’s got the power?

A new report ranking members of Congress for how powerful they are shows that Greater Cincinnati is lagging in legislative VIPs.

Of course, former Rep. Rob Portman – now a nominee to become President Bush’s budget director – is not included in the list.

But still.

Portman’s successor, Rep. Jean Schmidt of Miami Township, is ranked No. 433 out of 435 members of the House and 232 out of 232 House Republicans.

Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Westwood, is No. 186 in the House while freshman Rep. Geoff Davis of Hebron in Northern Kentucky is slightly better, at No. 169.

What about new House Majority Leader John Boehner, a Republican from West Chester?

He’s ranked No. 33. But keep in mind that he’s only held his new post for a little over three months.

The region is in somewhat better shape in the Senate.

Senate Whip Mitch McConnell, a Louisville Republican, is ranked No. 7 out of 100 senators.

Sen. Mike DeWine, a Cedarville Republican, is No. 26.

But Sens. Jim Bunning of Northern Kentucky and George Voinovich of Cleveland were below average, ranked No. 62 and No. 70, respectively.

DeWine is running for re-election this year against Rep. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat from northern Ohio that was ranked as No. 315 out of 435 members of the House.

Rep. Ted Strickland, a Democrat who is running for Ohio governor against Republican Ken Blackwell, was ranked No. 402 out of 435.

“As Members of Congress for more than a decade, Brown and Strickland should be embarrassed by their ineffectiveness,” said Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett in a statement.

“They’re running around the state saying they deserve more responsibility. Ohio voters expect more and will not look favorably on Brown and Strickland’s ineffectiveness and arrogance.”

The rankings are done annually by Knowlegis, a private, nonpartisan company that specializes in fostering civic participation. They are based on a lawmaker’s position, influence and legislative activity.

Isn't it refreshing to know that Brown and Strickland are not ranked high among the culture of corruption.

Talk about arrogance, benedict sure thinks he is a positive voice when even The University of Cincinnati advised him to bypass his visit here ! lol, lol, lol

It will be nice to throw the rubberstamping crooks out of office !

The more the w(R)ong wing rag tries to make the race leaders, (Brown, Strickland) look bad, the more we see how disconnected they are to the voter.

I suppose the fishwrap is arrogant enough to think they could sway the tide of the nation. (nothing like balanced reporting ? I suppose the democratic response to the survey is in file 13 ?)

Face it, the crony, corrupt, political hacking w(R)ong wing nuts are on their way out.

His own black folk doesn't want the voter suppressing buckwheat blackwell !

Hell, buckwheat blackwell's own party calls him a hypocrite !

Da da da whine stumbles over his own feet !

Keep going Sherrod and Ted, you are on the right track if you have the rubber-stamping, mad brad posting, w(R)ong wing fishwrap running scared !

I'm surprised Mean Jean was ranked that high.

Especially amazing given that she's ranked behind so many members of the minority.

Bob Bennett calling Ted Strickland arrogant and ineffective is the absolute most preposterous political comment that I think I have ever heard. Ted Strickland is an honorable and decent man. He is the solution to the culture of corruption.

Mr. Bennett, with all due respect, you gave us Jean Schmidt. We are giving you Ted Strickland.

Ted is above politics. He, like myself, cares more about people than he will ever care about politics. I was proud to have my name on the same ballot as his earlier this year. Southern Ohio will be very fortunate when Ted becomes our next Governor. It's about time we have some honor and dignity in our government.

Isn't it typical you would throw in a quote from the Republican chairman and nothing from the Democrats. Once again, Malia pleases the powers that be on Walnut Street.

I guess this is one explanation for Chabot getting nothing done for the Westside. The other reason, of course, is that he is a follower and not a leader.

Jim Parker - Former Candidate for US Congress

Jim, I want first to thank you and congratulate you for placing your neck and name on the ballot.

Second, I want to apologize for not taking you more serious. Although I extremely like you as an individual, I never expected, nor considered, you a viable candidate. You proved us all wrong and I have to admit, I don't know beans.

The fact that you were able to carry as many voters as you did in a five man horse race and the leader at one point made us all stand up and take notice ! Hell, even deep pockets (Mallory endorsed) Thor was sweating bullets.

Your a little difficult to understand, but, you are the genuine real thing. Your heart, your passion for the middle class and those that need a hand up, is admiring.

Jim, you humbled me, please forgive, and keep working for justice, equality for all. Including this arrogant SOB.

I certainly hope Strickland can find a place involving state health care for you.

You are a true patriotic, hard working, public servant.

Great Jean Scmidth is just about last of all of the people in DC. I just can't wait to see what great things she can get done, or should I say can't get done for us in Southwest Ohio. She will be a member of a stupid committee that gets nothing done. We are screwed her in Cincy.

Well you voted for the idiot and now you got her!!!!!

There certainly is a story.

McConnell did in fact intervene in the business of the US Parks according to the article in the Lexington Herald Leader this week.

The fine was halved, while the perps should have been jailed.

The greedy developers blatantly destroyed a sacred battle monument on designated federal historic places property to expand a stupid golf course.

They then ran for cover to McConnell as big favored donors.

Question: would the Senator have done this for a small contracter?

Yes there is a big story here because these same clowns have apparantly committed similar outrages before.

"In 1999, NTS agreed to pay $60,000 after being assessed $96,000 in damages, also related to wrecking earthworks. McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, intervened in that case as well, according to Park Service records, although the extent of his involvement was not disclosed."

"This case wasn't even moving at glacial speed. It was dead in the water," Ruch said. "It's an example of political influence at the expense of the historical resources being held in trust for the American people."

NTS executives and their families have contributed at least $46,000 to McConnell campaigns in recent years."

Therein is your story! <<

Over 500,000 Americans died in an unconstituional war because the tyrant Lincoln infringed on the 10th amendment. Now we can't even respect the dead buried in hallowed ground?

You might as well dig your grand mother up and pry the gold from her teeth and break her finger bones and remove her wedding rings while you're at it.
