Mistaken identity at the Health Alliance

As Ken Hanover, chief executive officer of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, was praising the agreement that allows his agency to buy Drake Center, Inc., he praised all three Hamilton County commissioners -- even though he didn't mean to.

In a Friday press conference at Drake to announce the agreement, Hanover praised the perseverance of Commissioner Phil Heimlich.

Hanover also intended to praise the "tenacity" of Commissioner Pat DeWine, who personally injected himself into the discussions last month after a previous proposal for Drake to be bought by the Health Alliance failed and helped negotiate the new deal.

But in his comments to the Drake employees assembled at the noon press conference, instead of praising the tenacity of DeWine, Hanover inadvertantly praised the tenacity in the talks of Commissioner Todd Portune -- who wasn't involved in the talks that culminated with the agreement.

In fact, Hanover twice misidentified DeWine as Portune in his comments.

After the first time, Heimlich turned to DeWine -- they were seated next to each other at the press conference -- and asked if DeWine wanted something done to correct Hanover. Heimlich then turned to Karen Bankston, the Health Alliance vice president running Drake, and whispered in her ear. Bankston then rose and stood behind Hanover until he finished his comments.

She then whispered in his ear and Hanover sheepishly told the audience he had confused DeWine with Portune.

Why hasn't the Enquirer reported what WCPO reported a few weeks ago, that Heimlich & DeWine refuse to release the appraisal for Drake? How do they sell a public asset and refuse to disclose its value, which has previously been assessed at around $120 million, but is now on the block to Ken Hanover for pennies on the dollar?

How is the public supposed to know what's going on? Oops, sorry. That's the idea and the Enquirer is happy to help the deal along.

Just curious, was Dick Weiland at the event?

Why is it that not one of the major news outlets in Cincinnati, save Laurie Quinlivan's ITeam report, not investigated the seedy details involved in the sale of the sale of taxpayer owned Drake hospital to a private consortium at a sweetheart price? Why is it that anytime Phil Heimlich is involved in a potential scandal, he gets a free pass from the collective Cincinnati media?

Why has there been no follow up to the ITeam investigation of the Drake sale? Why is it that the Enquirer, Post, WKRC or WLWT have not investigated this story in any depth at all? What about the questions raised by the County Commissioners refusal to release the appraised value of Drake, a taxpayer owned property that many sources value at over 100 million dollars , to the media and classifying it as a 'trade secret'? Does this sale include a clause which mandate Drake's continued mission? Why has an independent appraiser not valued Drake? Why has Mr. Heimlich gone to great pains to see to it that Todd Portune, seemingly the only proponent of transparency in County government, has been excluded from every stage of the Drake Sale? Will no one in the Fourth Estate ask these questions of our government?

Why has no one examined Mr. Heimlich's campaign contributors, which likely include many nursing home owners? This was the case with Mr. Heimlich's "Drake Wastes Money Committee” PAC, which was almost entirely funded by private nursing home owners, who would benefit considerably by picking up Drake’s patients and the Medicare payments that came with them. This has been documented by a part time news site, The Cincinnati Beacon, and can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/l2hwu

Why has Cincinnati's media refused to ask these questions?

As to the (excellent) ITeam story on Drakegate, Laurie Quinlivan has shown herself to be a most tenacious journalist many times in the past. I can only believe that the powers that be at WCPO have prevented her from digging deeper into the Drakegate scandal and following up on this story.

The topper has to be the lead-in to Kimball Perry's article in today's cincinnati.com, which states "The Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati will pay Hamilton County $30 million for the rehabilitation hospital and take taxpayers off the hook". I have read some biased articles in my time, many of them written in the Enquire, but never in my life have I read such a piece of biased, hackneyed, rubber stamping journalism. Slimeball Perry is clearly Mr. Heimlich's stooge.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

Anon. 8:55p.m.:
Poor choice of words re Todd Portune, inasmuch as most of the public is well aware that he uses a wheelchair due to a disease which has affected his back & his ability to walk.

Frankly, I'm sick to death of all the talk about bio-diesel and ethanol.

Where do you think all the proceeds for the corn and cellulos-based ethanol goes to - farmers and forestry-owners both heavily-Conservative Republican groups!!!

We should NOT allow our government to fund bio-diesel and ethanol research, and I'm never going to support funding such a Right-Wing industry as bio-fuels.

I will continue to drive my '81 Chevy Impala because she's treated me very well over the years. There's NO WAY I will EVER consider buying a vehicle that can run on ethanol. That would practically be putting money into Dick Cheney's pockets.

It's hard to decide which is better, this post or the one about you stepping in front of Cranley.

In either case, it's great reporting. Truly top shelf, Mr. Perry. Keep up the great, great work!

Au Contraire, mon Frère, the heartland certainly votes for Bush, and THAT's where all the ethanol money is going to - Red States!

Wake Up America, don't let crooked Dick Cheney become even more rich with this ethanol panzi scheme.

If Conservatives are going to get all the ethanol proceeds, jerk, then why are Dems so eager for the corn gas?

So what if most of the farmers voted for Bush, they won't vote for him again if the Progressives win Iowa.
