McEwen gives $50,000 to his favorite candidate

Which, of course, would be himself.

Bob McEwen, the Republican challenger in the 2nd District congressional race, loaned his own campaign $50,000 back in March, according to the pre-primary campaign finance report his campaign filed with the Federal Election Commission.

That loan accounted for nearly one-fourth of the total contributions to his campaign during the first quarter of 2006, and helped him go from $576.09 in the bank at the beginning of the year to total receipts of $221,436 through April 15. With nearly $170,000 in expenditures, McEwen was left with $52,920 in the bank.

His opponent, Jean Schmidt, raked in $215,664 in the same period, to add to the $162,140 she already had in the bank on Jan. 1. As of April 15, she has more than twice the cash on hand as McEwen - $116,985.06.

Incumbency has it advantages.

Howard, how did you miss part I. Line 13, where Schmidt LOANED HERSELF ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND????

What report is the Enquirer reading? She raised less $63,000 LESS than McEwen
and $50k was from D.C. area PACs.

Get your facts straight.

So the REAL headline would be the McEwen outraised the incumbent, right?

How much did SHE loan to herself?

The Schmidt campaign should be humiliated by being outraised by the challenger.

Look again, kids, Schmidt loaned herself $100K and repaid it within a couple of days. In other words, the loan is off the books. McEwen is nearly $400,000 in the hole when you include the loans he made to himself last year.

at 6:15 PM, April 21, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you are talking about money that other people gave to the candidate, then Schmidt raised $115K in the reporting period and McEwen raised $164K. Challneger outraising incumbent! Let's remember, Bob wasn't even a declared candidate on January 1.

Oh, Schmidt's gonna need that money, too. Stan Chesley doesn't work cheap.

This doesn't look too good for Mean Jean. Excluding loans made to themselves, the challenger Bob McEwen outraised Mean Jean in the last reporting period.

And now she has to pay the huge legal fees charged by liberal fundraising king Stan Chesley, which will allow him to donate more money to the liberal Democrats of his choice. Those of you who donated to Mean Jean ought to think about that again - your contributions will end up in the pocket of a liberal activist lawyer, so he can donate more money to liberal Democrats.

I voted for Jean in the last general election. She has lost my vote forever.
I am supporting Bob right now and have seen the supporters of Jean step to new low standards.
Yesterday I saw 2 big McEwen signs had been taken down. They were folded in half and on the groud. I put them back up. Right next to the Schmidt signs that were there also. Fair for both to have signs up. Today I see the Mcewen signs have been stolen and a 2nd Schmidt sign is up in its place. Not only is that breaking a federal law but it is just plain SAD!!! What do all of you out there think about this. It is fine for all of us to take sides and support one canidate or the other. That is America. The taking down and destroying of McEwen signs is shows no class at all. You should be ashamed and I ask that you call for the end of this practice.
I called the McEwen people and told them. They said that they will get new signs out there. I said can we take down the 2nd Schmidt signs that were put where the McEwen signs were. They said no. They said we are not going to go down to their level. As it ends up this is not isolated but is happening everywhere. McEwen people said this has been happening alot. Jean you should be ashamed that people supporting you are doing this.
I am saddened by this and sorry but Jean will never get another vote from me. I guess this tells me alot about the Schmidt supporters. No class. 10 days before th election they spend their campaign money on a Democratic Lawyer(number on Clinton, Kerry fundraiser) to throw mud at BOB. Instead of talking issues.
Great job people. I have lost total faith in Jean now!!!!!

Signs are not permitted in the public right-of-way. Permission must be granted to post a sign on private property, if permission is granted to one candidate it does not mean that the other candidate has an equal right to post a sign on the same property.
I have seen very few of Bob's signs anywhere other than public right-of-way.
Perhaps it is the dept of highways doing their job and removing the illegally posted signs!!!???

actually, i'm pretty sure ODOT has taken most of the illegally placed mcewen signs down, and a few days later, they're back up again.

mcewen has no regard for the law. then again, im not surprised

I was thinking about that sign location and I believe I know where you are talking about. If it is in Milford off of route 50 next to the bike trail, that is private property! The signs that are placed there are at the owners discretion. You have to ask the owner of the property to place any sign in that location. Therefore, if you want to know the truth, ask the owner of the land which candidates signs he said okay to. Im sure there is a reason for two Schmidt signs there.

I was thinking about the sign location post on this blog and I think I know where the author is talking about. If it is the location in Milford off of route 50 at the bike trail enterence, that is private property! Whoever owns the land has final say on what is place d there. So before you jump to conclussions about taking down signs, you may want to ask the owner of the land which candidates signs he wanted to be placed there. I am sure there is a good reason why two Schmidt signs are there!

Ed younginger owns the property. He is a registered democrat and has given permission for Jean to placeher signs. The signs we are talking about are on private property in Batavia where the owner has given permission to Bob mewenand has refused permission to Jean Schmidt to postsigns.
Jeanhas Eric Kephuas placing signs in the right of way , medianstrip, on SR32, the Appalacjhian highway from tthe Brown County Line toPike County every 4miles. The yard signs are posted about an eighth of a mile apart. They are posted illegally and are meant to reinforce name ID. McEwen has instructed staff to leave any Jean signs alone unless the property owner orders us to take them down.

Jean had operation clean sweep in effect last year when all opponent signs that could be locatedwere stripped from all property, government and private, within 72 hours of the race. One was taken from my yard.this year Ihave amotion dectector set up to a camera. Smile Jennifer!

Finers and toes, fingers and toes, everybody knows it is fingers and toes! The oldest calculator ever made.
Thencame the abacus, then the ten key calculator and nowacomputer. BobmcEwen raised money 3 to1 from grassroots voters overJean Schmidt. Schmidt raised $50,000 from Pacs.
I wonder how carl Lindner feels about his conservative campaign dollars going to support the biggest liberal attorney in America?

Jean Schmidt, facing her own dilemma before the Ohio Elections Board, got up and left duringher deposition claiming " congressional privilege." Congressional privilege only exists on the floor of the House, Jean. You could legally claim the fifth amendment right against self incrimination, but not congressional privilege.
Sch,idt has loaned hercampaign $355,000.00 since last year., about the same for Mcewen. Schmidt has taken to low brow campaign tactics. She is throwing mud where she knows there is no basis for complaint.

She made theattacks personal, but insisted that the other cndidates sign a pledge where she can notbe referred to by name. Perjhaps she doesnot like citizens comparing Bob MCEwens voting record in Congress andthe Ohio House to Jean's record of sleazy politics.
Jean votedtoincrease spending by $5,000,000,000.00 in one budget cycle n Columbus. She says she made a deal with Larry Householder so she could cut $120,000,000. from Planed Parenthood's budget. So her pro-life stance cost Ohio citizens $40 for evey one she cost Planned Parenthood. Great deal Jean.
Jean is a spender, born with a silver spoon in her mouth, she has no concept of the value of a dollar.
Let us retire the congressman.

So let me get this straight:

1) Schmidt lied on her resume.

2) She lied about at least 3, maybe more =) endorsements.

3) She sent subpoenas to Bob McEwen to cross examine him in her own ethics trial.

4) She stormed out of her own deposition, refusing to answer questions about when she graduated, and claimed "Congressional Privelege" - whatever that means.

5) She hired liberal superlawyer $tan Che$ley to "investigate" Bob McEwen.

6) She had her best friend and roommate, Michelle Schneider, and later had $tan Che$ley sling mud on her behalf that McEwen would be charged with a felony for having a house in Virginia.

7) When the dust cleared, $tan Che$ley filed a lame, nitpicky complaint about the wording on a mail piece. Hardly the stuff of felonies, and almost laughable in it's obvious purpose - to distract from Jean's floundering campaign.

8) She has raised LESS money than McEwen, even though she took nearly $50,000 in PAC money.

9) Now her supporters are campaigning about sign locations.

I have never seen a more pathetic excuse for an incumbent campaign.

at 11:44 AM, April 22, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't believe that the Schmidt people come back wiht one location and say that they are not taking signs down. I know for a fact on Public, and Private property the Schmidt people have been taking signs down. Don't give us an example of one location and think you are explaining yourself. It is known that this is part of your mode of operation. Get rid of all Mcewen signs. So quit crying about Mcewen signs being illegally placed. Once agian a smoke screen and stop taking his signs down.

Lets talk issues, or thats right you don't have time to, you are spending your campaign money hiring a Democratic Lawyer to throw mud at Bob and you are running around destroying his signs.

Howard, you are an embarrassment. Get your facts straight!! Jean loaned herself more than twice what Bob did! Did you actually read any of the FEC reports, or did Maggie Buchanan tell you what to write? You are a poor excuse for a reporter, get the story right and stop being a pawn of Jean Schmidt and her feminist friend Maggie Buchanan.

Bill Cunningham's show on Thursday April 20th featured Bob McEwen. Bob said "I am not the negative campaign, I have never campaigned negatively, and I will not campaign negatively." As he spoke, literature attacking Jean Schmidt for her degrees, with a picture of a tassle around her neck was going through the US Postal Service. Bob lied on the air, as his lies were going through our postal service. Now misleading people on questionarres 16 years ago, or lying to the people of the district 10 days before your election. You tell me who's worse.

the only issues bob can talk about are things that happened years ago, and then when jean calls him out on live tv, you guys get defensive. you guys cant say a thing about what shes done in dc because you know her record in dc is flawless. so yes, lets talk about the issues instead of water treatment plants named after "eritrea is a christian nation" bob mcewen. you guys are complete hypocrites. the mcewen camp sent out a mailer yesterday regarding jean's education degree and endorsements, yet you 'want to talk about the issues'. maybe bob should be spending his money on a defense lawyer rather than on attack ads?...that is, if he has any money left..mcewen just doesn't get it. he's finished, rather you guys want to admit it or not. when bob decides to sell his house in virginia and REALLY live in the second district, maybe the voters will take him seriously. until then, enjoy the next few days bobby. i hear virginia is nice this time of year.

Anon 12:56- Bob is doing comparative advertising. Nothing more, nothing less. Since the Enquirer has spiked the scandal of Mean Jean's consistent and continuous lying for the past 16 years (including, several times, lying to the Enquirer), this is the only way the truth can ever get out.

I guess the poor spoiled rich kids hanging around the Schmidt campaign are having a hard time dealing with the fact that they've thrown their lot in with a lying wretched miserable human being.

Maybe Mommy and Daddy can give you another SUV and send you off to law school next year.

Schmidt supporters. Bob has always wanted to talk and debate the issues. If you listen to him he has many ideas and things he wants to get done for us in Southwest Ohio. All I hear from Schmidt people, we have more money, your signs are in the wrong place, we are going to hire a Democratic lawyer.
Wow pretty sensitive if after all of your mud throwing and hiding and not debating you get something that says something negative about Bob. First have not seen this and don't know if it came from the McEwen camp but my guess it hurts because it is true. Jean supporters you did not want to debate you were negative you have hired Democratic lawyers. Now you hear something negative about Jean and you cry about it. ALl I have to say is what goes around comes around.

I loved the email from the McEwen campaign today. They are having a fundraiser next week, to raise $10,000. Bob, maybe you should have loaned yourself more. Oh but my favorite part of the email was the fact they had to tell their supporters what amounts would equal the $100 check they're supposed to bring. I guess when all your supporters are pushing the nursing home they need some help with the math. Now, is the $10,000 really going to be used for mailings? Or for that wonderful defense attorney they're goign to have to hire. Better take out a second mortgage Bobby!

Pitiful responses. First the point was that Bob lied on the air to his suppoters while knowingly sending out negative ads that clearly say "Paid for by Bob McEwen for Congress" on them. I was comparing Bob's lying to Jean's lying, one being on a questionairre 16 years ago and one being on the air 10 days before the election. Maybe he's just so warm and fuzzy you can't accept he's a liar too. Also I sometimes hang out around the Schmidt camp, I also don't have parents who have the ability to buy me a new SUV or hardly send me to state universities. So whichever whiny COAST supporter that was who can't stand his increase of a penny on his taxes this year please, save it for people who manage their money correctly. And we'll see you at Argosy!

at 4:28 PM, April 22, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

the jean-bashing mailer he sent out specifically says "paid for by mcewen for congress", so yes dr. obvious, it did come from the mcewen camp. secondly, lets compare the "on the issues" section on jeans site to bobs.

enough said.

You do not bash an incompetent by pointing out her incompetency. You do not bash a liar, by catching her in a lie.

Mrs. Schmidt's performance in Congress has been pathetic. The Congressman Murtha insult, alone, took our District to a new low. We offended every Marine in America, active and retired, by letting the woman represent us in Congress.

The Chesley suit--that is hiring a hearse racing lawyer, who has been Bill Clinton's biggest booster in Southern Ohio for many years--to imply that you lose your Ohio citizenship by taking a job out of the State, was also an insult to all of our men in Uniform. They, as Bob McEwen, do not and did not cease to be good Ohioans, by serving us out of the State.

At Anderson Township, last Wednesday, Mrs. Schmidt refused to show up for what could have been a very revealing debate, but she had a motley crew of pickets there with signs trying to vilify a fine American. Incidentally, in her answers to a questionaire, she indicated that she would send young women into combat! She is willing to risk the lives and limbs of your daughters, but not face an articulate opponent in a debate!!

Let her be judged by the kooks, Chesley and those pickets, she has chosen to be indentified with. She and her campaign are beneath contempt.

Monday, I am going to call the local TV stations to inquire if there is any time available for purchase, so that I may analyze Mrs. Schmidt's record for the voters. (Maybe, if I can arrange it, I'll give her the opportunity to send Chesley over to try to defend her. That would be a real hoot!)

Am I hearing this right. Schmidt hires a DEMOCRATIC Lawyer who raised a ton of money for John Kerry(yes she is spending campaign funds to do this) to throw out lies and smoke at Bob. She says 2 things to 2 different groups about the Death Penalty. Refuses to show up and Debate(but we want her to face the Dems in DC). Has been caught in several lies. And then when the McEwen camp points these out the Schimdt people lose it. It is obvious these lies and half-truths that are being said about Jean are all true. She did claim endorsements that she did not have. She does not have one of the degrees she claims she does, she did sneak into the Reds Opening day parade with out pre-registration, and so on and so on.
She did vote to increase taxes in this state to the point where we are one of the most taxed states in the country.(you say a penny is what the COAST people are talking about) I see alot of pennies here and alot of pennies there. And it does add up. Jean voted FOR the many tax increases. And Jean's votes have helped cause this state to be at the bottom of job creation.
So you get something negative about Jean. SO WHAT!!! If she will not show up at a debate(but like a chicken the Schmidt people send a bunch of people to hold signs that were negative about Bob) What Jean can duck a debate and you can send people with a bunch of Negative signs but the minute you get something in the mail you cry. Hey go rip down somemore McEwen signs. And come out and debate Jean.

Oh yea I also liked the e-mail that was negative about Bob having a fund raiser. Isn't this an election and don't candiates do?? Oh yea Bob will not use his funds to hire a Democratic Lawyer.

We all really only knew about all of the lies in the last few years. There would not be a pattern to her lying and giving any answer to get elected?? No there is no pattern at all!!!!

Jean Schmidt has embarrassed the district one time too many when she hired Stan Chesley.

That's the last straw. I don't care if McEwen lives in Alaska, you don't hire Hillary Clinton's #1 supporter to sling mud at another Republican.

She's got to go.

Regarding the Sign Wars.

I spotted many new Schmidt signs along 32 from Eastgate to my journey back to Mount Orab. I am a seasoned sign guy and know how competitive sign placement can be, but if you are going to place blame on the McEwen camp and volunteers for putting up signs where they really shouldn't go, you also need to stop doing the same. In other words walk the walk or stop talking. Until May 3rd, good luck and good night.

Mr. Flax, perhaps if you were as well known an attorney as Stan Chesley, it would be you representing Jean.
I can't blame her for hiring the best attorney she could find, and I like the fact that reached across the ailse to an attorney of the opposite party. Maybe it will keep some of the partisan BS out of the mix.
Bob has not been "serving us" for the past 14 years!!!
He has been serving himself and the foreign governments that he has been representing. HUGE DIFFERENCE!! HE DID NOT RETURN TO OHIO ANYTIME AS A FULLTIME RESIDENT SINCE LEAVING ALL THOSE MANY YEARS AGO!!
Having an Ohio drivers liscence or a condo address that belongs to someone else hardly qualifies one to participate in Ohio elections.
I'm surprised that the Board of Elections are not pursuing this, I'm sure glad Mrs. Schmidt is!
I don't know Bob, and have nothing against him except for his coming here from Virginia to try to dupe the uninformed Ohio citizens into voting for him. If Ohio were so important to him, he should live here and raise his family here!!
How about it Bob, sell that big home in Virginia before the election. Show us that you will truly represent us and live among us!!!
If you are elected, will you ever return to Ohio??
Is there any law that requires a representative to spend any time in the state that sends them to congress?? or could Bob just go back to Virginny and represent us until the next election, then return for a few months, put on a big campaign against a local candidate!!
Please McEwen supporters, see the error in your ways before its too late..

First in a post you said you don't know Bob. Have you met and talked to both canidates?? The answer is no, I have. Yet you seem to be able to say everything and know everything about Bob. Lets see his lobbying was for 2 years(the same amount Rob Portman did before he became our Rep.) and was for 2 things. An Islamic country wanted to improve relations with the US. Thye hired Bob and guess what happened, this country has and is helping us in the war on terror and we have a base there now. Another was Bob was brought in to help with the killing and war on the Ethiopian boarder. He was not in DC working for a company trying to sell something to our government. In fact his actions and work have helped the US and some poor(he probably saved lives) people in Africa.
Yes Bob will keep his place here. He will be the same rep. that he was when he was a congressman. Who go much done for the people in Southwest Ohio. He will probably keep the home near DC since if you are in congress you probably need a home in Cincy and DC.

Reaching across the aisle to a Democratic lawyer. Give me a break. She hired a slim ball who is well known to have been a top cemocrateic fund raiser who has sued, sued, and sued(can you say class action) to earn his millions. I see it as a sad action by someone who does not want to talk about her tax and spend history.

So Bob has been in Virginia for 14 years, worked as a lobbiest for 2 years, has he been out of work for the other 12?? Who is paying for the 2 homes that he has had for the last 14 years?? Was he not told by the board of elections that he should be voting in Virginia. How can an Ohio resident be eligible to send his childen to a public school in Virginia??

Issue One- Jean walks behind a sign in a Northern Hamilton County parade in 2005. The sign reads " Character Counts." I wonder what her former opponent in township trustee races will say when they learn she embelished her resume, untruthfully,so voters could think she is more intelligent than she really is. Jean has declared in writing that she taught for four years. Under oath she admits she counted her student teaching at Withrow and three years of teaching one class of morality at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Elementary School one day per week.No school system ever hired her.
Jean, is one of the ten commandments " Thou shalt not bear false witness."?

Jean, just who was that state department official you met with, to blow off your depostition? In Washington DC no one seems to know who s/he was? If you met with no one you committed perjury.

Stan Chesley got a $50,000 retainer from you. Is Carl Lindner ever going to give you a dime again? Are you not embarassed to know an incumbent can not raise more than you did so far? Why have Republicans cut off your purse strings?

Why did the two trustees in Miami Twp. not appoint you to replace Joe Uecker who took your old seat in Columbus? Ask Ed Humphtrey and Mary Mackley Wolf why they begged for the endorsement of Ken Tracy over his challenger, overtly supported by your sister, in the Miami Twp.central committee meeting? Why did the committeemen back Ken and not you? Wake up people, the silent actions have told us she is not worth supporting. Make your vote LOUD. End Jean's rule of mean and spiteful politics. Vote for Bob McEwen , a proven leader who has always gained the respect of congressional peers.

I think the Enquirer's reporting of this race has been rather one sided. The endorsement of Schmidt confirmed this to me. Another thing that really bothors me about this election is how there is competition over who is the most insular candidate- Schmidt brags about going to college in Cincinnati, before long we'll have "I've never left Cincinnati in my whole life!" candidate. I don't know why living in a bubble and having a narrow perspective makes one more qualified for congress.

Two anonymous posters saw fit to challenge my credentials versus Stan Chesley. One suggested that Chesley is a better lawyer; the other that he is better known.

I have never taken a poll, as to who is better known in the Congressional District, Chesley or I, but I certainly would be happy to demonstrate who is the more articulate advocate, by debating Chesley on political philosophy or legal ethics, anywhere, any place, any time.

As for that question, who is better known. In the Republican Congressional Primary in the District we are discussing, I got 45% of the vote, in 1974, running against the endorsed candidate, who spent five times as much money. I will grant you, I am not so well known as Mr. Chesley among Liberal Democrats, or Clinton supporters. But my credentials to attack sleezey interjections into Republican politics by Schmidt/Chesley are well established.

Incidentally, I was one of the original 6 members of a local organization that began promoting Goldwater in Hamilton County, in December, 1960--an organization joined a few months later by one of the two most prominent Republican leaders in the County, in that era. So my devotion to Conservative values in this County, can not be questioned.

But, if your standard is racing hearses to a makeshift morgue, to solicit clients, I am indeed not the man that Mrs. Schmidt's boy Chesley is!

Now I understand why you back Bob, you were around way back when and want to put your croney back in office.
He is using you just as he is trying to use the uninformed OHIO voters in the second district.
Got beat, has lots of money, sees a possible opening, runs again, will be beat again on May 2.
I'll wager that WIN or LOSE he returns to his home in Virginia.
HIS HOME IN VIRGINIA!!!!
Not his NEWLY ACQUIRED house in Ohio.

Do you vote under the name "common sense," or just post under that handle when you are peddling the Schmidt/Chesley smear?
