Social hour, followed by insults

Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen will debate April 19. Or McEwen will debate himself. (Read to the end.)

The details, from the Anderson Township Republican Club:

March 25, 2006—The Anderson Township Republican Club has scheduled a debate between Congresswoman Jean Schmidt and former Congressman Bob McEwen on April 19, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mercy Healthplex Facility at Five Mile and State Roads in Anderson Township. There will also be social hour beforehand starting at 6:00 p.m. Mercy Healthplex is just across the street from the Anderson Mercy Hospital.

Jean Schmidt and Bob McEwen are both seeking the nomination in the May 7, 2006 (sic - May 2) primary election to run as the endorsed Republican candidate in the November 7, 2006 general election for the Ohio Second District Congressional seat. “There is an uneasy feeling among Ohio Second District Republicans because the last primary election to fill the seat vacated by Rob Portman did not produce a winning candidate who received more than 50% of the vote.” said Anderson Township Republican Central Committee Co-Chair Mike Jordan. “Our hope is that this primary will finally settle the question as to who Republicans want as their candidate and ultimately representing them in Congress.”

The previous primary election on June 14, 2005 had eleven candidates seeking the Republican Second District Congressional nomination. Jean Schmidt won the nomination by finishing first but receiving only 31% of the Republican vote. The other candidates received a combined 69% of the Republican vote with former Congressman Bob McEwen finishing a close second. Russ Jackson, President of the Anderson Township Republican Club, thinks this primary will serve as an unofficial run-off election of the two candidates that finished at the top in the last primary. “Eleven Republican candidates running in the last primary was simply too many with most of the candidates holding very similar positions, so how do you choose?” asked Jackson. “One thing is for sure, this time one Republican is going to finish the primary election with more than 50% of the vote.”

Duffy Beischel, a former president of the Anderson Township Republican Club, has served as moderator for the previous two Republican Congressional debates sponsored by the club. “Trying to moderate the last debate with eleven candidates was very difficult. Members of the audience did not get a fair opportunity to ask their questions,” commented Beischel. “With only two hours for the debate and each of the eleven candidates making opening remarks and having to answer each question, time did not allow for many questions.”

As with previous debates, each candidate will be allowed opening remarks followed by questions submitted earlier that evening by audience members. The club is also going to try another method of submitting questions in advance of the debate by using email and fax. If anyone wants to submit a question for both candidates, they can email it to andersontownship@aim.com or fax the question toll-free to 866-278-0157. The questions will not be given to the candidates in advance. “With two major candidates running for the nomination this time, there will be plenty of time for Second District residents to seek answers from candidates,” said Beischel.

But there is still uncertainty if both candidates will be in attendance. “Originally, we had scheduled the debate for our regular meeting on April 5, but Jean’s staff said she was in Washington on that date and they gave us April 19 as a date she could make it,” said Beischel. “Now other staff members are giving us various reasons why she cannot or will not attend. But they gave us that date, we’re moving forward, Bob McEwen will be in attendance, and we hope Jean will decide to participate.”

Could it be that the accidental congresswoman’s staff accidentally forgot to mark the later date on her appointment calendar? Surely this could not be an accident. Maybe she realizes that Big Bob will use her to mop the floor, on his way to cleaning up all of her accidents she seems to be leaving in her wake.

Schmidt could be not debating McEwen for the same reason Blackwell isn't debating Petro -- she may have info indicating that she has a commanding lead, as does Blackwell.

And no one gets to blast Schmidt for not debating McEwen (if that turns out to be the case) unless they blast Blackwell for the same reason.

Otherwise--hypocrisy.

Yeah, but as I read it, she committed to the debate, then later backed out. I heard someone from Anderson say that they have emails from her staff within the last ten days or so confirming the date, said that someone named Allen wanted to work out the details, then they turned around and backed out yesterday or today.

I have many reasons for not voting for Jean Schmidt. I have many reasons for voting for Bob McEwen. The fact is Jean Schmidt has never been much of a debater. She performed terribly at the Milford Chamber of Commerce debate againstTom Niehaus. She loses her temper easily when her record is challenged. For example, she grabbed Doug Mink's arm and twisted him around when she left the stage of the " debate" in Lebanon last time. Mink challenged her ethics.
If Jean can not manipulate the format to her advantage she will run from a debate. She has always had an agenda of the politics of I.
Her ethics have been chqllengedsince when it was revealed that she took Bengal tickets froma lobbyist while servingin the Ohio House angainst state law. Then she accused a former Marine ( asI am ) of being a coward against the House rules in DC.
Does she not realize that the insult she provided Murtha goes to every veteran in America, regardless of party affiliation? How obtuse is Jean Schmidt?
I believe if Mean Jean, a well deserved nick name, had an insurmountable lead and had a poll to show it , she would have been advertising something other than a poll taken in January, before McEwen announced. I think Deborah Kraus will receive more votes in Clermont County than Jean will.
Kraus is predicting McEwen the winner with Kraus in second. It could be as Republican stalwarts throughout southern Ohio treat Jean like she has the plague.
The scandal of her partners receiving preferential treatment of real estate taxes on parcels of land being held for development should anger tax payers who have been, and are continuing to be asked to support schools.
Jean had four years to address the issues in Columbus, but she voted to increase spending, and taxes and never addressed the issues fo school funding. The reason is a lack of vision and the personal politics of I that she preactices.

Jean Schmidt made a mistake. The mistake was when she or her staff agreed in the first place. She should have ignored the Carpetbagging Check-Bouncer. Or she could have offered to debate him on his home turf-- in Virginia.
Or she could offer to debate him at the hospital where he announced his pathetic campaign.
Or she could offer to debate him at his next home: a prison, after he gets convicted of passing bad checks and stealing office equipment.

Enquirer guys: you do know that McEwen's campaign stole their computers and everything from the Warren County Republican Party, right?

Doug Mink was not a real candidate ... I cannot believe anyone would even mention that guy's name. Obviously he reads this blog.

Yesterday was an exhausting day... I spent the day campaigning in Warren, Hamilton, Clermont, Brown and Adams Counties. I didn't get home until 3:00 in the morning. Today, I will be focusing on the Eastern end of the District. There are lots of deer on Routes 52, 41 and 32 at that hour. I'm becoming very familiar with the rest stop on 32 in Pike County.

There are so many nice people who live in our District. My only regret is that there is no way to meet all of them before May the 2nd. I have worked harder than any Democratic Candidate in Southern Ohio history to win a primary that most people believe will result in the election of another Republican Representative. If history is any indicator of future results, they might be right. However, that will not be the case if they have to run against me. If I win the Democratic primary, the opposition candidate is going to have to do more than spend money. They are going to have to work for it.

This is my advance notice to the Republican Party of Southern Ohio... Before the end of today, I will issue a direct request to them to be permitted to stand in place of Jean Schmidt at the debate with Bob McEwen that she will not attend. I would be happy to publicly debate Bob McEwen without Jean Schmidt. This is not a new request for me. I challenged Jean last December to a debate and she ignored me. Then, in January, I challenged Jean AND Bob and they both ignored me. This whole thing about Jean Schmidt not responding sounds like the pot calling the kettle black to me.

Is the Republican Party willing to accept my challenge.

Why is Jean Schmidt hiding from the citizens of the Second District? Why is she refusing to come out from behind the iron gates of the lavish Schmidt compound to face the voters?

She is hiding because a debate would bring into the light undesirable characteristics concealed by last year’s 11 candidate primary. She will not have that same opportunity this year. With only Bob McEwen standing in her way, she will not be able to blend into the crowd once again. Jean Schmidt needs to come forward to face this district; she cannot hide until May 2nd. Jean and her handlers are afraid to debate Bob McEwen, because Jean has no answers for her conduct and no ideas about how to help the people of this district.

Jean has gotten to this position through lies, manipulation and intimidation. If voters knew the real Jean, they would realize there is an imprudent, unfeeling millionaire representing our families in Washington. It’s not about gracious service for Jean; it’s about power over citizens, over voters and over our families and over our businesses. The notion of dutiful public service is beyond anything Jean could ever comprehend.

Jean Schmidt is no Republican. Republicans serve with sincerity and dignity. They hold their heads high while striding in the hallowed halls of our nation’s Capitol, in full realization that they are there to serve something outside of themselves. Republicans understand that the citizenry have entrusted to them, a solemn responsibility.

Whether Jean continues to hide in her palatial Clermont County estate or comes out to meet with her constituents, voters will realize that her time has passed and cannot be forgotten soon enough.

A debate in Georgetown? I guess it seems that Jean is afraid to debate in in Anderson Townhip in Eastern Hamilton County and right up against Clermont County where there is a huge block of Republican voters, but she'll go out to Brown County where the population is more sparse. Looks like she just does not want as many people to see her bomb. If she is afraid of Anderson, how can she possibly handle the pressure of the Democrats? Jean is mentally weak, has problems with the truth, and will not come out to meet the voters in Anderson. What a coward. She's got to go.

So if I look at a few of the previous postings, I have a choice between a liar who is avoiding property taxes by getting her cronies to give her the "FOJ" or "Friend of Joe" treatment Clermont style, and who has reduced the Ohio Second Congressional District to a laughing stock thanks to Saturday Night Live.

-or-

A former Congressman who used the House Bank, wrote checks without making a deposit and the House Bank provided overdraft protection just like my bank does for me. How many other members of the House did the same? Big deal.

He's going to be indicted? That's the same lies Jennifer Black told the Right to Life Organization before the last primary - and she said at the time, "any day now."

The Schmidt campaign and Jean in particular has to stop this endless avoidance of the truth.

This just off the wire. Nancy Zimpher has endorsed Bob McEwen, no word yet from Huggins, but his recent appearance at a Schmidt event should say something about his position. Hope this clears up some of your minds.

Yes, I am predicting Deborah Kraus a close second behind McEwen. I really would like to be the winner. If I could get some mainstream media attention that might happen. I called the Anderson Township Republican Club to ask to be part of the debate and was told that they only picked the two people they thought would be the top two finishers in the race. I told them they had the wrong female. That I, Deborah Kraus would be one of the top two finishers. Apparently a few people agree.
Elect Deborah Kraus to get government back to what it was meant to be, "of the people, by the people, for the people."

Sorry Jim, the debate is a debate scheduled for the REPUBLICAN PRIMARY. Second, the Hamilton County Republican Party has nothing to do with the Anderson debate. It is being conducted by the Anderson Township Republican Club. Third, the Anderson Township Republican Club will consider conducting a debate between the Republican and Democratic candidates after the primary and prior to the general election. However, if Jean Schmidt wins the primary, she may back out of that debate also so what's the point?

at 9:12 AM, March 27, 2006 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why is Parker calling for a debate with Schmidt & McEwen when the Democratic Primary still has not been held.

I call on a Democratic debate in Anderson township between the Democratic Party Candidates. It will be good to know who I should vote for.

Hey Parker... get on Burke's ass and then tell us what he says. A debate should be held or at least an open forum where views are given before the election.

Anyway, good luck.

Jean Schmidt is the biggest LIAR ever.

I am a Republican and I'm telling you now that had the truth surfaced last year about Jean Schmidt, she would NOT be in Congress today.

She lies about everything - Tom Brinkman may be crude, he may be rude, but he knows Jean Schmidt well when he calls her a PATHOLOGICAL LIAR.

The nonsense above about McEwen using stolen equipment from Warren County? Are you kidding me? If that was true, why is the Sheriff of Warren County backing Bob McEwen???

LIES LIES LIES. God help you Jean. The truth always wins in the end.

I just spoke with someone who spoke to Jean's campaign manager. Apparently they do not want to debate because she supposedly has 50% of the Anderson vote now and they are afraid if she comes out and talks to the people in Anderson that she could lose votes instead of gaining votes. So they do not want Jean screwing up by talking to the Anderson voters. Geez, this is what we have for a congresswoman? God help us get rid of this embarassment and liar.

The answer to the Anon’s question as to who’s running Jean’s campaign: Allen Freeman was running it illegally out of the local district office until they opened a legitimate campaign office just a week ago. Barry Bennett is running the Schmidt campaign illegally out of Jean’s DC Congressional Office.

Both are nice guys outside of politics, and are embarrassed to be on the Schmidt team – who wouldn’t be? Just wait to see how Schmidt destroys them after she loses. She doesn’t have it within her to accept the blame for all her gaffs and rudeness like a gracious, gentle lady would. Freeman and Bennett will soon become her scapegoats and punching bags. Sorry boys, but you knew this when you signed up for this assignment. My advice, get out now before what’s left of your careers is trampled under foot by all those folks abandoning the sinking Schmidt campaign.

Freeman’s political resume began in the early 90’s as the losing campaign manager for Eric Minameyer in the State Rep race against Bob Schuler (and a third candidate who is a crazed GOP feminist, former “Republicans for Choice” chairwoman, and who now supports Schmidt).

Freeman also managed to lose the race for long-time incumbent Republican Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Gene Utz to a Democrat. Now that wasn’t easy to do back in those days when Hamilton County was a bright, shining red beacon in SW Ohio. Freeman also played around as campaign manager for Hamilton County judges who had no opposition. He even campaigned for Portman for a few months in Portman’s fifth or sixth re-election for Congress (like Portman needed anyone’s help – all he had to do was fog a mirror to win by that time in his political career).

However, when you hear Schmidt describe Freeman’s track record, she makes it sound like Portman’s legacy was written, framed and hung on the wall by Allen Freeman, political genius. Boy, does Freeman have her (and apparently many others) fooled.

On the Portman team, Freeman was really just a glorified yard sign installer when not shielding Rob from egleomaniacs (a person with an insatiable desire to run for office) such as Jean Schmidt.

Freeman recently took leave from his full-time position (no one really knows what he does there) from the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana (OKI) Regional Council of Governments – the same unelected government bureaucracy that force-fed Hamilton County voters the failed light rail debacle – the ballot initiative voters regurgitated back with a 2-1 margin of defeat! (OKI will deny they were the force behind the light rail debacle, but insiders all know they had a very heavy hand in it – why else did they fire anyone and everyone on their staff that publicly refuted light rail as the panacea of Cincinnati’s short-comings?). But I digress. Let’s get back to the question.

OKI eagerly loaned Freeman to the Schmidt campaign partly because no one would miss him at OKI, but mostly because OKI leaders know the true tax-and-spend Jean Schmidt. They simply wanted one of their insiders to assure her re-election in return for her pork-barrel federal spending support for their next light rail sham they’re currently cooking up. Make no mistake, the connection is no coincidence – it’s a deal. OKI loans one of their political hacks to get Schmidt re-elected and Schmidt helps OKI get their pork.

Hopefully, that answers your question.

So there really is truth to the campaign slogan: "De-elect Schmidt before she speaks again!"

Peter Deane, you have a good idea. Why don't you write a letter to the editor of the Post and the Enquirer? I think that a true debate amongst the Democratic candidates instead of these forums with "random" order appearance and questions will show that I really am the candidate who has a really good chance of winning this District.

Peter, I don't know you, but let's make this happen. I'm sure that the Democratic Candidates will show up. Maybe we could have a few television cameras in the room. Maybe we could even invite Bob and Jean.

I challenge the Democratic Candidates in the Second Congressional District to a debate on Healthcare, the Economy and the War in Iraq. Maybe we could take questions from the audience. And maybe we could have more than a ridiculous 2 minutes to answer some questions the way they need to be answered.

I'm in. Jeff, Thor, Gabby, Victoria... are you willing to do this?

Jim Parker
