Dems take a pass on 2nd District rugby scrum

When the Hamilton County Democratic Party's executive committee gathered Wednesday night in the basement of the Norwood Community Center, it appeared they were about to become the only one of seven counties in the 2nd Congressional District to endorse in the five-candidate primary.

By the time the meeting ended, though, they had thought better of it - thanks to some sage advice from some party elders.

The party's nominating committee had interviewed all five. Wednesday night, the nominating committee recommended a dual endorsement - one for Victoria Wulsin (even though the co-chairman of the nominating committee kept calling her "Wilson") and another for Gaby Downey of Sharonville, who teaches history and government at Milford High School.

All five candidates were given three minutes to make their pitches to the executive committee Wednesday night.

One of them, Newtown businessman Thor Jacobs could not be there; his mother passed away Wednesday morning. So David Little, a long-time political operative who is working on the Jacobs campaign, spoke for him, arguing that the party should not endorse and pointing out - rightly - that, a year ago, nobody in the room had heard of any of the candidates and there was no purpose to be served by giving one or two or them an advantage.

Wulsin used her three minutes to tell the Democrats that she thinks Jean Schmidt is an embarassment, which was not really a case of going out on a limb, given the audience she was speaking too.

Downey, a first-time candidate, did a little bank-shot hit on Wulsin, a resident of Indian Hill. The 2nd District, Downey said, is a place with regular working folks, not unlike the family she grew up in. "I don't have to pretend to be part of this district,'' Downey said.

Jeff Sinnard, a civil engineer from Anderson Township, was unapologetic for being a "pro-life Democrat,'' saying he knows that many Democrats "go crazy'' when they hear that.

Jim Parker, the health care administrator from Pike County, had people scratching their heads and looking nervously for the exits when he pulled out a jar of beans and threw them around the room, saying he was going to grow a "magic beanstalk'' that would presumably lead to Capitol Hill.

Honest, we're not making this up.

Parker was nice enough, though, to stay behind after the meeting and sweep up his beans.

After hearing from the five campaigns, three of the elder statesmen of the party - former congressman Tom Luken, retired AFL-CIO executive director Dan Radford and former party co-chairman Don Driehaus - rose to argue that the party really had no reason to endorse any of these candidates.

"Unless we have a really serious problem with one of these candidates, we should just let the process work,'' Driehaus said. "We should leave it up to the voters.''

The argument had an impact - county party chairman Tim Burke called for a voice vote on the Wulsin-Downey endorsements and they were voted down overwhelmingly.

Finally, something Democrats and Republicans can agree on!

And the goofjob that is Jim Parker obviously wowed them.

That's not going out on a limb in front of any audience, except for an audience of Bob Taft supporters (if you can find any outside the Schmidt family).

Interesting presentation by Parker. I'm sure he'll be here soon with a 10 paragraph rant explaining why he did it. Lucky us.

Wulsin won't have had much of a fight in a room full of Republicans. In the unlikely event Schmidt can pull off a miracle and beat McEwen, Wulsin would probably get enough Republican votes to win the general election.

let's face it, you guys have Jim Parker and we have Jean Schmidt. Put the both of them together and you might have a half a brain.

Its nice to hear that Tim Burke and his former employer, the by-now superannuated Thomas A Luken, are showing some interest in the 2nd Ohio Congressional race.

Presumably, all of their interest should or would be focused on the 1st Ohio race, where young Mr Cranley is running.

It would be the greatest victory of all time if Victoria Wulsin won the general election for the Ohio 2nd CD race. But let's face it...the 2nd Ohio is strictly "Dr Wilke" territory.

Mr Burke and Mr Luken, et al, ought be working NONSTOP to get young Mr Cranley in a position to take on Steve Chabot. After all, its thanks to Tom Luken that Chabot and the Republicans have that seat.

(Since young Charlie didn't seem to take to life in DC too well.)

Perhaps this time, Burke and especially Luken will be able to help prepare Mr Cranley "the right way" -getting him in a position to grab a really good Committee assignment -- like Commerce, and not something miserable (like Banking) which apparently bored young Charlie Luken enough into "cutting and running" right out of DC altogether.

Unfortately we have not seem much from Mr Cranley except on the most pedestrian, boring local issues.

Does he (or anyone else in Cincinnati?) have any stand on a)the War, b)the War, c)The War, and issues d through l or m: jobs and the economy.(?!)

Mr Luken served for a good number of years in Congress, was on the Commerce Committee, and had an important subcommittee Chairmanship.

Plus he was some kind of Deputy Whip or something.

So somewhere in his Congressional Archives, or old filing cabinet or maybe out in his garage there should be a lot of material with which to help prepare Mr Cranlee --- or at least give him a fighting chance, for pete's sake!

How do you think it makes me feel when I am the ONLY candidate in this election who does not live in Hamilton County and the Hamilton County Democratic Executive Committee (for the first time in probably forever) voted to endorse NOBODY in the 2nd Congressional District? Pretty good. Especially when I've knocked on the doors of more than 1,000 families who voted in last year's special election. And (as of right now) we still have 38 and 1/2 days to go.

Did I read a few comments back where a person who doesn't support me indicated that I might possibly win. (Sounds like the opposition is geting worried.) Maybe that's why candidates from both parties are now starting to show up in the Eastern end of the district...

Even Tim Burke laughed when I handed him those beans. That's what we need; a Congressman who will work harder than any person you've ever met but still be able to make people laugh (even with all the problems that we have in our country right now.) One person can make a difference in the lives of millions of people...

Also for the record, any one of the Democratic Candidates is a better person and would be a better leader for the people of Southern Ohio than Jean Schmidt or Bob McEwen.

The Hamilton County Democratic Forum is going to host the Democratic candidates on Thursday, March 30th at 7:00 pm at the 20th Century Theater in Oakley Square. I hope you can make it there because I want to tell you about why the number 15 is the most important number in America.

"Not Anonymous"

Jim Parker, MBA/MHA
Democratic Candidate for US Congress
Southern Ohio - 2nd District - 2006

I don't to want to wait that long. Why is "the number 15" the most important number in America?

Jim:

You may be able to get the voters behind you ?

I saw the presentations and with all due respect, you are not the strongest player.

The vote was not in support of you, but, in support of a Democratic principal of opportunity !

But, good luck !

Maybe hard work can turn out the vote ?

I'll try and advise you again, talk to voters not bloggers !

Also please note.....the party failed to support the Mallory Mafia. The West End passed out the facts about the dirt on dumb old dale. The Mallorys were pissed that all their favors to Tim Burke and CityLink failed to get their bozo an endorsement.

WestEnd Whiner:

No one puts credence in your propaganda.

The choice was to let the voters decide.

CityLink will be in your community because that is where it should be.

Put the service where the most good can be done.

Your propaganda was found in the trash.

Clean up your own mess so we don't have to treat your throw away !

Citylink doesn't belong in Cincinnati. That's what council said 8-1. That's what zonimg appeal said. Dale was voted out of his West End office 31-10. Bob Killins was voted in 28-1. CityLink's lawyer Tim Burke bought Dale and Dale sold out his neighbors. His neighbors are putting their efforts to put Eve in office and defeat loser Dale one more time. Then Dale can send out another bunch of frivolous lawsuits.

Is it the number of years that George W Bush spent in the first 12 grades?

"The vote was not in support of you, but, in support of a Democratic principal of opportunity!"

This has to be a bigger joke than the meeting of democratic minds(oxymoron) was. The democratic party has been hijacked by republicans. To have Tim Burp as leader is truely the blind leading the blind. I have never seen so many sheep huddled in one room.

Let's endorse more republicans in dem's clothing. Cranley, Wulsin, Kearney, Pepper certainly reflect the Democratic principal of opportunity! Opportunity to be raped by the special interests that stand behind these candidates and laugh at the misdirection of the party. Follow the money spent on any of the last elections and see where it came from. The media won't do any research into who is funding these people. That is not important to corporate media. They rake in millions during elections and feed the people lies to get their candidates elected. Is it any wonder that voters are apathetic?

Jim, This is where you will bring 15 elephants on stage and describe a national woe to each one. OR you will put 15 matches under each seat and tell everyone that is all we will have to heat our houses next winter. OR you will sacrifice 15 virgins to your lord Zuul in hopes of getting elected-

No mater what we are sick of these predictable presentations. You are speaking to a group that is slightly more educated about politics than the average voter. Enough already.
