Schmidt, Chabot in endorsement dispute

Rep. Jean Schmidt’s campaign Web site lists several political endorsements, including one from fellow Cincinnati Rep. Steve Chabot.

There’s only one problem.

Chabot's office said today that the Westwod Republican didn’t endorse Schmidt, who faces a primary challenge May 2 from Republican Bob McEwen, a former congressman from southern Ohio.

"We have not been asked for an endorsement by anyone in that race," Chabot spokesman Gary Lindgren said today, adding that Chabot backs both Schmidt and McEwen.

But Schmidt spokesman Barry Bennett said Schmidt has a different recollection of a Feb. 16 meeting with Chabot, during which she asked for Chabot’s support and was told she had it.

"She believes she walked out of that meeting with his endorsement," Bennett said. "Now they are saying that his support doesn’t mean an endorsement?"

Lindgren said Chabot doesn’t plan to ask Schmidt to take his name off her site or mailing, but he also won’t object if McEwen lists Chabot as a supporter.

"Generally, Steve does not endorse in local primary elections. He believes that the voters in the district are best equipped to decide who is best to represent them," Lindgren said.

Meanwhile, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., wasn’t as understanding.

The chairman of the House caucus on immigration reform asked Schmidt on Monday to take his name off her Web site because – contrary to her claim – he has not endorsed her either.

"We do not customarily endorse congressional candidates and we did not in this case," Tancredo spokesman Will Adams said today.

Incidentally, a group founded by Tancredo - Team America - held an event at The Celestial Steakhouse in Cincinnati last Friday with McEwen. Coincidence?

Schmidt’s site was updated Tuesday afternoon to remove Tancredo’s name.

Bennett said the Tancredo item on the Web site should have said that he "supports" Schmidt, not that he "endorses" her.

sounds like Chabot is changing his mind again. in the primary election last year Chabot gave thousands of dollars to Schmidt, but none to McEwen. what gives?

BIG WHOOP! Chabot is in league with another lobbyist.

Two questions quickly come to mind here:
1. If the Schmidt website was supposed to say that Tancredo "supports" her, rather than "endorses" her, why did they remove the whole thing relating to Tom? You would expect to find a statement somewhere on there now saying "Congressman Tancredo... etc... (insert immigration hawk credentials)... supports Jean Schmidt..."

2. Since Steve Chabot's been in Congress going back to 1995, how many other Members of Congress (or other public officials) have been confused about his supporting/endorsing/whatevering of their re-election bids?

"Chabot backs both Schmidt and McEwen"

That's leadership for you.

Chabot was neutral in the last primary and didn't contribute to anyone. Is it really that hard to get your facts straight?

Wow Steve. Might not have been the best idea out there. Especially since you've got a real challenger. You could have used her help in October.

Maybe I should call Mr. Chabot and see if he will support me also. I am running on the republican ticket for second congressional too.

Sure the ChaBOTS would love to pretend Steve never supported Schmidt, especially since it's now clear she hate veterans and has no place in Congress, and ok, fine he didn't give money to her before the primary. Chabot did give Mean Jean $1000 to beat Paul Hackett last year, however. It's right there in the FEC reports. http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/can_give/H6OH02086

Send a Dem to congress and a clear message !

If you won't send tainted contributions back received from the likes of Abramoff, then we don't care who you support because you will support a culture of corruption !

It looks like all the Republicans are in Deep Schmidt !

They will not endorse her because she is a L-I-B-E-R-A-L.

She voted for every single one of Bob Taft's tax increases. She supported all of Larry Householder's big government agenda.

No consider the character issues.

When Danny Buhp denied the statements attributed by her, they "had a different understanding of the conversation."

When Tom Tancredo denied he had endorsed her, Schmidt said she "had a different understanding of the conversation."

When Steve Chabot denied he had endorsed her, Schmidt said she "had a different understanding of the conversation."

Does anyone see a pattern here?

Chabot is afraid of his own shadow right now. Chris Finney and COAST threatened him and he ran. McEwen has the same problem with endorsements. He posted on his web site endorsements from Munuoz, Dr. Willke, Brad Mattis and others. They have all been removed, in fact Dr. Willke is endorsing Schmidt. McEwen will be going down as a four time loser and heading back to his home in Virginia to be with the rest of his family. You sure haven't seen his children around here over the years that McEwen claims to have lived here.

Doesn't McEwen's trial begin soon. You know where McEwen forgot he lost the last three elections and kept using the title congressman. Also I think his residency is being challenged. He claims to be living in back bedrooms of other peoples home, back seats of cars and under bridges in both Highland County and Hamilton County. When Highland County threw him out he moved into Patricia Nixon's back beedroom in Hamilton County. But he still owned his million dollar home in Virginia. Come on Bob-tell the truth.

Actually his kids were minors living in Virginia while he claimed to be living in the back rooms of Highland County. Why don't you ask McEwen where his kids went to school while he was living in Ohio.

Bob McEwen has always had an Ohio drivers license. In the last decade he has been out of congress. In that time he has gained some perspective as a taxx payer and not a tax receiver. his income is a solid six digits, before the decimal point, each of those years. he has paid more in taxes than 25 % of his congressional voter based earned every year.
McEwen wants government to work. The second congressional district has been a donor district. Monies are not being reinvested by the federal government into the exhurb counties, like Clermont, Warren and Brown County.
Send someone who is used to knowing the pain of paying taxes to represent you!

It sounds like Mean Jean has a troubling habit of claiming support from people, who later turn out to deny ever supporting her. You can't believe anything that comes out of her mouth.

Have we ever had a Congressman of either party who is more of an embarrassment to this area than Mean Jean Schmidt?
