McEwen campaign nearly broke

Republican Bob McEwen, a former southwest Ohio congressman who announced last week that he'll challenge Rep. Jean Schmdit in the 2nd District, is starting his campaign without much cash.

According to a campaign finance report McEwen filed with the Federal Election Commission on Jan. 18 - the same day he announced that he'd challenge Schmidt in the GOP primary - he had just $576.09 in the bank.

The report, which covers activity from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, says McEwen started the 4th quarter of last year with $867.50 in the bank. He loaned his campaign $1,000 and accepted $646.04 from Cincinnati Bell. He then spent $425 on a campaign event at the Holiday Inn Cincinnati Eastgate in October and paid the San Diego, Calif.-based Complete Campaigns firm $650 for fundraising in October, November and December of last year.

Michael Harlow, a spokesman for McEwen's campaign, said McEwen plans to raise "a heck of a lot more money" and has been on the phone with fundraisers all week.

"He has received several thousand dollars just in the past week," Harlow said.

Meanwhile, Schmidt's last campaign finance report was filed Jan. 9 and covers activity from Aug. 23 to Sept. 30. It showed that her campaign had $47,791.03 in the bank at that time. A report showing how much cash she had on hand as of Dec. 31 is due to the FEC by the end of this month.

That's also when we'll find out how much money has been raised by Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Westwood, and his Democratic opponent, Cincinnati City Councilman John Cranley, so keep an eye out for an upcoming story in The Enquirer about how much money each of the area candidates have raised so far.

It just shows the poor state of our democratic system, when the amount of money a campaign has could dictate the worth of the candidate. If the candidate has a genuine personality and the firm resolve of a leader, voters will see. Voters, especially in Southern Ohio, will not be fooled by a campaign that spends big but has no political message. What did Pat DeWine's millions of campaign dollars get him? McEwen did well during that last election because of his magnetic personality and steadfast demeanor.

Schmidt will need her big-money campaign machine this election season. Voters are tired of her embarrassing antics and are longing for the days of respectable representation.

My name is Jim Parker and I am the Democratic Candidate for Congress who has been running against Jean Schmidt since last September.

I hope that every person who lives in Southern Ohio reads what you just wrote because you are right.

The voters of Southern Ohio actually do have a decent and respectable person running for Congress in Southern Ohio right now... Jim Parker, Democratic Candidate for US Congress.

Our country is in desperate need of leadership. We have problems with everything from Medicare, the war, the American auto industry, the small businesses that can't afford health insurance for their employees, the baby boomers who are being left behind, the list goes on and on and on... We desperately need leadership in this country. America is starving for it.

The politics of money have virtually destroyed most of what is good about the government that I believe in... Only people like you will help to change it back. I don't care if you are a Democrat or a Republican. What matters is that you are an American. And I am offering Democrats, Republicans and Independent voters in Southern Ohio a respectable choice for their next US Representative.

I've spent my entire career working in healthcare leadership positions and now I want to spend it working for you. Politics to me is about making our country better; our entire country (not just the coutnry that belongs to the people who can purchase a voice in our government.) THE AMERICA THAT I BELIEVE IN IS NOT FOR SALE.

I believe that I am a Democrat who will be taken seriously by Republicans. This is what we need in order to win the election in Southern Ohio. As a matter of fact, it is the only thing that can change this District. The Democratic Party has been losing the election in this District for 32 years. And look at what we have to show for it...

I know that Jean Schmidt is taking me seriously or she wouldn't be mailing Medicare literature to all of your Democratic neighbors. I know that Bob McEwen is taking me seriuously or he wouldn't have given his announcement speech from a healthcare organization.

Look at "Jim Parker for Congress" on the internet and you decide who the true healthcare candidate is... You decide who has offered fiscally responsible solutions to the healthcare fiscal crisis that is realized by millions of Americans. You decide who has the best answers for the middle class and the baby bommers who are taking care of their parents and their children at the same time.

If you are a Republican, I am going to ask you to do something that you have probably have never done before... I'm asking you to vote for me, a Democrat because I believe that we can bring this country back together again to solve this country's problems. I hope that you get your chance in November.

Economic problems affect everyone, not just the poor. Just wait and see the ripple effect of the 2,000 jobs that will be lost in Batavia. It will be terrible. These are serious times. Our country has serious problems. We need serious people (who come from outside of politics) to offer serious solutions.

This isn't just an election. This is a mission to take up the fight for every decent child and family who lives in Southern Ohio.

I'm asking thousands of people who live in Southern Ohio to believe in everything that I have been trying to do as much as I believe in you, your parents, your children and your neighbors. Thank you.

Jim Parker
Democratic Candidate for US Congress
Southern Ohio - 2nd District - 2006

It is sad that the amount of money a campaign has is the best indicator for election. The problem with DeWine last year during the primary is that he didn't raise his money, but rather his daddy did. A better key indicator of having money is where it comes from because that represents a base in your district or state.

During the August 2nd Special Election against Jean Schmidt, Paul Hackett raised more campaign funds. But it was very clear that 90 percent of his contribution list came outside of the Tri-State. I can't see Bob McEwen having an easy time raising money in the Second District. Who's going to be his Keynote speaker for a fundraiser? A washed up lobbyist! I bet he could get 5,000 per PAC to see Abramhoff speak.

Is the Enquirer going to shill for Jean like they did in the primary and general elections last year? Sure looks that way so far.

All told, Schmidt's $47k is far less impressive than McEwen's own position.

She's the incumbent and she doesn't even have enough cash to make a decent radio buy. Pathetic.

The SpEnquirer is a big part of this problem. They don't give fair coverage because they make $$$ with adds. We need a democratic media in order to have a healthy democracy.

Pepper proved the public is growing tired of this.

McEwan must be broke because Jack Abramoff had all the Republican lobbyist business.

An Open Letter To Malia Rolun:

Having read your many stories regarding Jean Schmidt, I am forced to conclude that you are acting as Jean Schmidt's press agent. You repeatedly print comments from her campaign staff referring to 'polls' showing "enormous" approval ratings for Ms. Schmidt and hefty leads over her opponents which have been widely discredited. You have also printed every positive-spin fluff piece 'press release' that Schmidt's campaign releases (running with the Marines? Come on!).

You have also completely ignored charges that Schmidt's campaign is being illegally run from her congressional office at the taxpayer's expense in direct violation of federal law.

If you really wish to campaign for Mean Jean please join her campaign and leave the "reporting" to someone who can remain impartial. Or perhaps you should be working for the 'fair and balanced' Fox News.
