Fast, Faster & Fastest

For those who think last week's Cincinnati City Council meeting ended quickly at 12 minutes, this week's meeting was only half that.

Council unanimously approved of 38 agenda items in six mintues, with time to spare. Council member Laketa Cole again took a minute or two to talk about the Neighborhod Summit coming up Feb. 4.

The brevity astounded Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell, and left him speechless. "Mr. Mayor," he said, "isn't there something else we can talk about?"

Chaos vs. do-nothing. Pick your poison.

I'd take chaos, otherwise known as democracy.

You bet there is more they should talk about.

This is how the process is supposed to work. The real work (debate, testimony, etc) happens in committee. By the time an item arrives on the floor of the full legislative body, all the details have been worked out. Generally, only the more controversial issues receive a lot of attention on the floor. This is how all legislative bodies work.

Besides, I think we can all agree that part of the reason Council meetings go faster is because no one is wasting time with shameless grandstanding...Reece.

...Smitherman...Malone.

No doubt Smitherman and Reece leaving makes a difference.

But there hasn't been any work, debate, or testimony at committees either.

You forgot Pepper.

There is supposed to be some debate, not on every issue, but some things should be openly discussed in public.

That's right -- Pepper was a real rabble rouser. Out of control!

But committee meetings have been a total joke. Nothing's happened at them, either.

Mallory is implementing practices from his General Assembly days where agenda items and other details were hammered out during morning caucuses. I think these changes are welcome.

As long as all meetings are public record, I like seeing Council conduct itself in a business-like manner. It will help rebuild the reputation of city gov't.

If they have all this time, why don't they talk about neighborhood opposition to CityLink? The Mayor says it's a "neighborhood issue" while his brother Dale does all possible to prevent a vote and freeze West End Community Council membership. CityLink will hurt Cincinnati, but few on council will talk publicly. BTW, Dale is on his way to impeachment.

Council won't talk about Citylink because Citylink is a good idea. What politician in their right mind would say, "Hey, let's stop people from helping the homeless and those less fortunate. Instead, let's continue to waste tax payer dollars on social programs that won't work!"

Attitudes like yours are what keep projects like the Banks, better schools, light rail, and other projects from becoming reality. It is why casino's go to Indiana and Newport on the Levy wound up in Kentucky.

CityLink update: Council votes againt CityLink 8-1, zoning votes against CityLink, the Mayor tries to manipulate a West End impeachment vote. All the Mallory power went down in flames when the West End voted Dale out of office 31-10. I'd say the West End, zoning and the City have spoken loud and clear that CityLink is not welcome in Cincinnati.
