Schmidt hires local vet
A combat-wounded Iraq war veteran from Union Township has been hired by Rep. Jean Schmidt to help other veterans navigate the VA health care system.
Paul Brondhaver, recently retired from the Ohio National Guard’s 216th Engineer Battalion, said he would work eight-to-10 hours a week, mostly from his Union Township home, assisting other returning Iraq veterans who need help claiming their VA benefits.
“I’m kind of the pioneer from my generation because I’ve already had to figure out the VA medical system for myself,’’ said the 37-year-old Brondhaver, who was severely injured in July 2004 when his Humvee was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. One of his fellow soldiers from the 216th was killed; and Brondhaver was left with over 300 pieces of metal in his body.
Brondhaver said that veterans who call Schmidt’s office for help will be referred to him.
“I can get them through the red tape and not only tell them what office to contact, but what person in that office they should talk to,’’ said Brondhaver, who said he would keep his full-time job with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission. “
I can do that because I’ve done it for myself.’’
Brondhaver said he doesn’t see his part-time work for a member of Congress as a political job.
“I would have done this for a Democrat, if one had asked me,’’ Brondhaver said.

Paul is nothing but a pubilicty hound who has acted as an unofficial Army recruiter.
At the Cincinati Recreation Center he's used his position to convince young and immature young men into joining the service when they were not ready for such an important commitment.

He has used his position at the Cincinnati Recreation Center to but undue pressure on young immmature men to make a commitment to the service when they were not prepared for such an important step.
If anyone even thinks this wasn't remotely political then I'd like to sell them the Brent Spence.
Political? I have never met Paul Brondhaver but I would believe a person with a Purple Heart on his chest and 1,000 pieces shrapnel in his body would not be doing this for self-promotion.
I applaud Schmidt’s office for getting a military man in there for the veterans. I wish I could say that about my congressman.
As a 17 year veteran I commend Schmidt for hiring someone to help the veteran's. This will make things a whole lot easier for our soldiers returning home. A thumbs up for Schmidt.
How about Schmidt herself doing something to help the veterans. For instance, instead of pretending there's enough body armor, she could go to bat for the soldiers, and get them the equipment they need. Then, not as many will come back missing limbs, and Bronhaver won't have to point so many vets to our underfunded (thanks to George Bush and the Republicans in Congress) VA hospitals. No, we can't have that, talking about the fact that Dubya sent these guys off to be killed or wounded without the proper equipment would be aiding the enemy. Giving them easier targets, however...
"Schmidt Hires Local Vet"
Hmmm... How about "Enquirer Prints Schmidt Press Release?"
Schmidt hides behind Iraq. Sure, it's good to help veterans, but I believe Portman, McEwen, Brinkman etc. would have done the same thing.
She needs to get a new issue. She doesn't own Iraq, she's just using it because she thinks it's a winner in the district.
Too bad for her, there's more to being my Representative than spouting off at the mouth about Iraq all the time.
How about hiring a staffer to tell Schmidt that raising the sales tax is a BAD idea?
