Cincinnati elects first black mayor (since Tillery)
The story of Tuesday's election in Cincinnati -- to the outside world, at least -- got portrayed as if the election of an African-American mayor was unheard of in the Queen City.
CINCINNATI (AP) - Four years after riots tore this city apart, Cincinnati voters elected a black mayor for the first time. That led to headlines like "City Elects First Black Mayor" in Yahoo! News and the Seattle Post Intelligencer.
State Sen. Mark Mallory defeated Councilman David Pepper, both Democrats, in a nonpartisan mayoral runoff Tuesday to lead Ohio's third-largest city.
Rioting broke out in 2001 after an unarmed black man was shot and killed by a white police officer trying to make an arrest. While racial tensions have calmed, crime, safety and revitalizing downtown remain leading issues.
True, Cincinnati was slow to embrace a black mayor -- even changing its system of electing council members in 1957 in order to thwart Ted Berry's ascent to the mayor's office for another 15 years.
And it's true that Berry, who finally became the city's first black mayor in 1972, and Ken Blackwell, selected as mayor in 1979, were elected as council president-mayor by their peers on City Council, not by voters.
But you can't say that Dwight Tillery (right), who was the top vote-getter in 1991, wasn't popularly elected as mayor. That was the whole point of the 1987 charter amendment that gave voters more of a voice of who the mayor was.
The system changed again in 2001, to remove the mayor from the council field entirely and have him directly elected on a ballot for mayor. Mark Mallory is the first African-American mayor under that four-year-old system.
That is, unless voters approve an executive mayor system and elect someone else as the first black, directly elected, executive mayor in the city's history.

Korte, I wish I could have been there to see your face when you realized that there are people in Cincinnati who don't do exactly what you tell them to do and that your "boy" Davey Pepper didn't get elected even though you campaigned daily in the Enquirer for him. Maybe you should go back to the drawing board and figure out another way to manipulate what could be a reputable news source in the city of Cincinnati. I have an idea for you. . . this may be a shocking new idea for you. . . something that you never thought of before. . . how about reporting real NEWS!!! I know it may be a new idea for you but give it a shot, you just may be able to pull it off if you remember ANYTHING you learned in journalism school.
I couldn't agree more! I expected to see Korte nipping at Mayor Mallory's heels starting Day One. If this story is any indicator, the divisiveness from the Enquirer won't stop.
the enquirer itself is a rag..fairly fit to toilet train a puppy on. it's useful for sports, job ads, the funnies and the crossword. if you want real news, you have to at least buy USA today. as for korte..he needs a new pic...looks like they caught him on a major constipation day.
OFC:
Compared to Pepper, Nate is a lightweight.
yeah, Nate couldn't lift Pepper's wallet if he tried with all his might....he's a wimp.
you're right, Nate probably couldn't lift Pepper wallet waighted down with all of the skeptical donations Pepper took.
Mallory is mayor, we can all rejoice!
"Chicken Little O Fool Cop" you have been banned, why are you back here.
It was the Republican Enqueer who had to note that "Major Mallory" is black and you to blame it on "Nate."
When will this city listen to the message rather than looking at the color of skin ?
It is no wonder some messages may need to be radically delivered in this city. Unfortunately, this Wrong Wing Wag is already creating divisiveness and foundation to vote out the black man.
Get back on topic:
"Chicken Little O Fool Cop"
No one cares to "Obey" your "Rules."
How does it feel to think you are a leader " with no followers" ?
I just wanna hear Nikki X, or "anonymous", on WLW with Bill Cunningham, again. That always offers me some serious afternoon entertainment.......lol
700 WLW is as big a joke as OFC
Ditto
Wolly Bully - who started as a Democrat and then, living in Wrong Wing County, was intimadated into becoming republican and now exploits the nascar rednecks for dollars !
The transcript from the call when Pepper concedes to Mallory:
Pepper: Hey Mark, congrats on barely beating me.
Mark: (laughing) I beat you pretty bad. I bet you thought you had it won until that last 25% came in.
Pepper: (breaking down) You're right, I did think that.
Mark: Peppy, when are you going to learn, you can't buy the working man's vote.
Pepper: But I also had a manual on how to run the city.
Mark: (laughing) Maybe next time you should get a manual on how to run for mayor.
Pepper: Good idea, I'll get started on it today.
Mark: I was kidding.
Pepper: Oh, ok. Do you think we could be friends. Maybe you need a vice mayor or a fund raiser.
Mark: My phone connection must be bad, I think I am hearing things wrong.
Pepper: I said...
Mark: I know what you said. I got to go, we are having Steak, Potatoes and PEPPERS for dinner tonight. BYE (click)
I am the man who posted the first comment. I assure you that I am not Nikki X! While I don't have a problem with a woman who wants police to be prosecuted when they do illegal things and who asks for the KKK not to be allowed to hold a rally on fountain square with police protection, I am not that woman. I do have a problem with some people who don't agree with those two issues (Enquirer and a great number of Cincinnatians). It's sad!
Luken might be the last white mayor this city sees for a long time.
Regardless of color, Luken might be the last BAD mayor you see for a long time.
OFC is really Korte...Why keep pretending?
Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah.
Okay Korte...Ooops, I mean OFC.
Sounds like "Chicken Little O Fool Cop" is getting a little defensive.
Perhaps "Chicken Little O Fool Cop" could hook-up with "Crybaby Pepper" and install "Spy Cameras" on all "Bloggers" so they would know who's speech to censor.
"Chicken little O Fool Cop" you only impress yourself with your third grade analysis and your rants of:
"They type a like !"
"They type a like !"
"They type a like !
"I did my test !"
"I did my test !"
"I did my test !"
Just like "Crybaby Pepper" take your book report and go back to school. You failed the "Test"
lol, lol, lol
"Chicken Little O Fool Cop" you can't even interpret a "Pun".
So. let me:
Ed-ju-ma-cake U
"Chicken Little O Fool Cop" is charged with being the "Word Police" so the "Street Wise" set him up for the "Fools Fall".
"I have a "Westbank" project you might be interested in.

O Felix Korte
You are losing it, aren't you?
Yes, he is. He shall soon rant the "Chicken Little O Fool Cop" Southgate, Mich, rope a dope, Bush Pioneer depressive chant:
"They don't like me anymore !"
"They don't like me anymore !"
"They don't like me anymore !"
Looks like Cincinati's not the only city plagued with bad reporting.
