Even in loss, Smitherman retreats to his base

One of the biggest bursts of applause to erupt from the Board of Elections last night came not for a winner, but for a loser.

Christopher Smitherman walked past the print reporters and television cameras to the corner of the board room, where African-American-oriented radio station WDBZ had set up shop.

"We are definitely going to continue to be a voice in the city," Smitherman promised the radio audience, though he gave no specific future plans.

"I'd like to keep this about Sen. Mark Mallory," he said. The financial planner from North Avondale said contributors to David Pepper's $1 million campaign for mayor should have hedged their investments.

"Now today, those people are going to have to call Sen. Mark Mallory and readjust their game plan."

interesting how its worded when its someone like Smitherman; one could say the Chimp in high office did the same thing in submitting Alito as the current S.C. nominee. If I was Smitherman, I would've done the same thing; why issue a statement/talk to the 'media' that has done nothing but treated you like compost. At least give Citybeat a statement... geez... LOL

Continue to be a voice in this city. Smitherson who??? When was he ever really a voice to begin with. Maybe a whisper.

At 6:30 last night, I went to vote. When I got my ballot, it was prepunched for Pepper. I said, "No way, give me a new ballot"
No wonder Pepper made it so close.

Did anyone else have this experience?

Smitherman will undoubtedly turn to a conspiracy theory and blame whitey for his loss, instead of his insanity and racebaiting on council.

at 8:52 AM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

First of all..to the moron who lied and said his card was prepunched, stop your embarrassing BS.

Secondly, Smitherman you are where you belong. Your true colors came shining through this past year. You are not a voice for the city. You are a voice for some special interest groups.

Lastly, Mallory now it's YOUR turn to show everyone something. Work for the CITY as a whole. Don't push special agenda items that ONLY favor african americans (a la Smitherman). Push agenda items that favor the CITY.

Mallory will not push special agenda items that favor african americans and I am not even sure where you get this idea.
If you listened to his ideas more and didn't pay attention to the color of his skin, you wouldn't even know he was african american.

I believe that the evidence is clear that the city of Cincinnati does not want racist, dishonest and embarassing folks representing this city like Smitherman. Every issue is not a racial one, I hope that this new council proves that.Everyone needs to take responsibility for their own behavior. No one is putting a gun to anyone's head, forcing them to commit crimes, quit school, act disrespectful and be a thug.

One solution would be more tax cuts for interracial marriages. That would bring people together.

at 10:42 AM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mallory is a mugh better candidate than Pepper for mending racial tension. Pepper is white upper class, he can't relate to the blacks. Mallory is a black man that has dealt with a lot of white people. He understands the whites and how to handle them.

at 10:48 AM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

That might work, but the majority 63% of interracial marriages are on welfare and would not receive any benefit. Perhaps this would encourage middle and upper class though.

at 10:49 AM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

You guys are funny! Why not just say that you are mad that your candidate didn't win. I am disappointed that Councilman Christopher Smitherman didn't win but I am not trashing the candidates who did win. Pepper didn't win and he went to his base being so called "mainstream" media. I don't call that retreating, I call it talking to the people who supported his candidacy. It's funny to me that racists like you guys (especially the enquirer) make so much out of so little. Now you want to trash Mallory. Pepper didn't win! Get behind the Mayor-elect Mark Mallory and let's all work to make Cincinnati better. Unless you really don't want things to get better. It is evident that all you guys (especially the enquirer) want is division by race, class, and any other thing that you guys can think of.

at 11:15 AM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's mighty funny that you Smitherman haters come out of the woodwork now that he has lost. What you all fail to realize is that there is only one person in accounting in charge of the financial books. No checks and balances when it comes to the money. I would venture to say the CPD is on par with the New Orleans police in terms of corruption, and Smitty was working to uncover that, which is why Fagman's panties were so tight. For those of you who think this council is going to work together a lot better, think about this. Ghiz was the one who thought she was better qualified to be on council than Monzel, and kind of trashed him in the media. Now they will be on the same council. She also cussed the Rep. party for not supporting her like she thought they should have. Watch the sparks fly when those two get sworn in. I wonder how Monzel is going to come up with any motions now that his buddy Malone is not there.

Of course 700wlw is THE radio station to be on - just ask Joy how many times she begged with Willie to be heard for 10 minutes.
Its her favorite station over da buzzz....

Hey "voice of reason", I don't vote in the city of Cincinnati but if I did I would have supported Smitherman because he is attempting to make people accountable about the money that they are spending and trying to let the citizens know where their tax dollars are going. I guess to you that sounds like "because he is black". You are an idiot and a racist if you believe that. I believe that Pepper is a spoiled brat and Mallory has shown leadership qualities in Columbus. I guess that makes me a racist to have reasons other than race to think one candidate is more qualified is better than another.

Ghiz is hot! At least now we have a better looking council. Man is she fiery!!

at 1:29 PM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

In response to "voice of reason" above, you obviously weren't at the Mallory victory party, because it was at least 30-40% white, and would have been more even if his family weren't so huge. (Not that I mind that, they're awesome people.)

And the only reason roselawn and bond hill put him over the top is that they were the last ones counted. Had they come in first, Mallory would have been on top the whole night and no one would have even raised that thought.

For those who don't want racists representing Cincinnati, Why have you not called for the removal of Streicher and Fangman...You did not ask for the removal of Mike Allen and Tarbell.

So please, let's not talk about getting rid of racist that represent Cincinnati.

By the way just because Spinmaster Enquirer made Smitherman look racist...you cannot believe everything you read (at least educated people don't).

As a person who knows Christopher Smitherman personally, he is not a racist, he is not anti-cop. Holding the police accountable for mis-spending tax-payer dollars is not anti-cop. DUH!

at 1:42 PM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just look at the numbers people! As black population in Price Hill has skyrocketed the crime rate has grown exponentially! Now it doesn't take a racist to figure that one out. Smitherman supported all of those people, not the police trying to stop thses people!

The problem in Cincinnati politics has been illustrated thoroughly on these comments. When is Cincinnati going to wake up and stop looking at EVERYTHING through the eyes of race? Somebody doesn't like Mallory or Smitherman... they MUST be a racist! The Enquirer endorses Pepper - must be racist! But other react to these claims by continuing the discussion on the basis of race. It's ridiculous. And it's no small wonder why we have a decaying city with a huge pit of nothingness between two stadiums and a bad crime rate. Everybody has a finger to point. If we're to survive (or dare I say improve our city), we need to give this stuff up and start working together on big ideas for the future. Sure, they're be quarrels. There should be! But I feel like Cincinnati politics in 2005 is simply in reruns from 1955....and NOBODY (white or black) wants to change the channel!

I would like to know where the person who said 67% of inter-racial marriages are on Welfare got their information. Please prove your statement as I believe that is a blatant racist comment.

The police weren't stopping anybody, they were too busy stealing 4.5 million dollars of taxpayer money.

But to deflect the criminal image that has been earned by the few bad apples on our police force, they villianized the man smart enough to expose the theft.

David Pepper is far from a racist. His dad, John Pepper gave more money to the National Underground Freedom Center than Oprah or Bill Cosby-you obviously don't know what you are talking about.

at 4:39 PM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Smitherman did not support criminals in Price Hill. Maybe you should look at those council folks who pandered to Westsiders.

Oh, by the way not all of the faces of crime in Price Hill are Black.

Maybe you should hold the corporations the David Pepper pandered to accountable for escalating crime as these corportae welfare mongers take and take without giving back to the communities they take from. Leaving both land and man in their wake destitute.

Go higher. George Bush is the problem with Price Hill.

at 4:56 PM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

George Bush is absolutely not the problem with Price Hill. Please, get some focus.

at 5:02 PM, November 09, 2005 Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just because you donate money to a cause does not make you not racist.

Monetary contributions does not determine racism.

What does what John Pepper
donates have to do with David Pepper being a racist?

Here is the focus, Smitherman is no more responsible for Price Hill crime or criminals than George Bush, me or you.

So please search deep inside yourself for the focus you so desparately ask for!

LMAO--

Pepper fans get over yourself...it was not that black people put Mallory over the top..I'm white..I voted for Mallory...my neighborhood...Mt Adams is hardly black and hardly poor AND is Pepper's neighborhood and they voted for Mallory. every single librarian and arts person i know voted for Mallory and I can count on one hand the number of those people that are African American.
Get over it..Pepper lost because he went over the top with his negative campaigning and showed himself to be the divisive and judgemental person he is in that campaign. That and people dont want an ex- bickering council person in charge of referreeing the bickering. get over it!

Cincinnati Job well done!

Black people did not vote for Mallory just because he was black.

If that were the case as many people are mis-stating, Courtis Fuller would have been Mayor and not Luken.

It's too bad some people have to look at everything through race. While I'm glad to see the Smart Mouth Little Punk Chris Smitherman out of there, I was also glad to see Mallory defeat Pepper.

Last night was a good one for the non-racists. Both Pepper and Smitherman tried to use their race to get ahead, and both lost. It was a bad night for the black militants and white trash of Cincinnati. Bye bye Pepper and Smitherman.

Smither was on the finance committe...do your research.

Smitherman is racist how, last time I checked, the CPD has both black and white people some good and some bad.

Smitherman worked for all citizens of Cincinnati.

If he is such a racist, why when the white woman was left for dead by both black and white cops did he champion the cause of that investigation?

Smitherman is not a racist, but because he would not fall to his knees kissing Allen-Streicher-Fangman ass, he is a racist.

You people are a joke.

a different take/tale on smitherman (warning - this is long):

chris simply didn't succeed in the private sector as a financial planner/adviser as the "going was tough" for his industry in the wake of the "tech wreck" & 9-11.

alternatively, chris opted for public life as a councilman. he ran a good enough campaign in 2003 to get elected.
at that time, he appealed to white & black voters as a broad-minded, educated candidate from a good family.

he may have believed that his new & instant notoriety would boost his financial clientele.

that's where it ended, though.

from the start, chris used his council pulpit to unleash his personal fury as - what he believed - an unfairly discounted professional.

chris likely believed he was a victim of racial discrimination and sought vengeance in council chambers.

for two years, chris acted out in foolish ways: dragging his children into his ridiculous taser stand, unjustifiably blasting chief tom streicher on day one and lately, coming to the aid of racist and race-baiter kabaka oba in public. poor self-control was chris' trademark.

his zealous interferences and vitriolic rants were commonplace in council & committee sessions.

chris never acquired the art of politics: backroom dealing, strategic coalitions, constituent development and reasonable & controlled speech in public, to name some of the basics.

he mistakenly relied on a self-perception of being cincinnati's top african-american advocate as well as council's financial watch dog.

he failed to see himself as others did.

he is widely considered a major political disappointment, especially among white voters expecting sensibility, good example and "big picture" thinking, the very attributes associated with mark mallory.

instead, chris now goes out kicking and screaming like alicia reece who, too, was a "disruptive self-promoter" (enquirer editorial) and in the end, did not serve the greater good of cincinnati.

signed, "the shrink"

Thank heavens that Smart Mouth Little Punk Smitherman is gone. Didn't like him at the get-go. All puffed up & full of himself. The one term wonder. He was Michael Bailey's boy (Kabaka Oba). Smitherman paid him & baited him to make spectacles on the floor of Council Chambers & taunt anyone & everyone that didn't bow down to him. It was pathetic how he pimped his kids on the Tazer business. Truly pathetic. He's gone & now he can get a real job like the rest of us. Financial planner my foot! That boy wanted to sell off the City's Retirement Fund. Not while I'm alive! I'm glad that all the voters of all cultures saw right thru his phony persona!

The Pepper ans Smitherman mst be depised alike as Pepper did the same thing Smitherman did. Not come to the resuce of the Black Fist, but told a judge that at the time of the allegations, Mr. Oba was at a council forum at the Verdin Bell center.

Those who have not come forward will be supeanoed.

To "the shrink". You are a joke. Smithermanis a class act, and you just as the Enquirer has done since Smitherman was elected to council will spin his exit as well.

He is not kicking and screaming as he exits, and he has politely wished all weel. For those of you call him puffed up and full of himself you just show who you truly are.

A black man who is proud, smart and articulate us called puffed up, because he will not bow and kiss the asses of the status quo.

Smitherman is a man we have not seen the last of, and who represent the City of Cincinnati well.

Thank you Councilman for being a true leader. Not a city councilman...but the people's councilman.

The Smart mouth punk did what voters put him on council to do, and because he wasn't willing to spray the status quo bullshit with perfume and wrap it with a bow, white Cincinnati could not except that.

Most Cincinnati voters want their ugly reality gift wrapped, and Councilman Smitherman shots straight.

Most of you people complaining about the councilman have yet to address the issue...The police stole 4.5 million dollars of taxpayer money.

Or maybe the complainers have received some of that money, and don't like Smitherman because he derailed your gravy train.

White man asks people to give an account of how they spent money, he is a watchdog. Black man asks people to give an account of how they spent money, he is considered racist? C'mon people, we need people to watch over our tax dollars whether he or she is white or black! No one will like it if they are questioned and the questioner will not be popular. Why is Cincinnati so afraid of change whether it is a famous doctors son (Phil Heimleich)or a so called "smart mouth little punk" (Christopher Smitherman), we need people to watch our tax dollars.

Smitherman did shoot straight and regardless of how much spinning goes on, the truth is the truth.

Smitherman fell victim not to being a smart mouth little punk (as racist see it), but to over voting west siders did the short vote and urban ward followed the 9 vote.

Smitherman is not a politician he is the people's councilman and so he was not accepted by the yes men and women of the status quo.

But he will be back and that is a fact.

This entire blog entry is based on a lie created by Mr. Korte. I was at the Board of Elections when Christopher Smitherman entered and he immediately stopped to talk to local TV, radio, and print media reporters.

I've got pictures of Smitherman addressing the media just as he entered the Board of Election on the night in question.

Where, oh where, are the Enquirer's editors!
