Four council challengers line up behind Pepper

After weeks of pooh-poohing state Sen. Mark Mallory's strategy of racking up endorsements, Councilman David Pepper is starting to fight back.

Thursday, the Pepper campaign will announce that a bi-partisan group of non-incumbent council candidates has endorsed Pepper. They include Democrats Cecil Thomas and Wendell P. Young and Republicans John Eby and Leslie Ghiz.

Though Pepper isn't formally endorsing a slate for City Council, Pepper makes no secret he'd like to see the same group elected. He also likes Democrats Jeff Berding, Eve Bolton, Laketa Cole, John Cranley and David C. Crowley.

Pepper said the endorsements give him a "head start on building consensus," and hinted that "there are more interesting endorsements coming."

Mallory, for his part, resists naming his "dream team" of council members.

"I have rejected this question on the campaign trail, for two reasons," he said in an interview earlier this week. One, he said, is political -- by picking sides, he could end up losing as many votes as he gains. Second, he said he's committed to work with whatever City Council the voters send him.

"You don't get to pick 'em," he said. "You have to develop them."

Mallory's list of endorsements includes the entire Hamilton County legislative delegation in the Ohio General Assembly (minus state Rep. Tom Brinkman Jr.), two former Ohio Senate presidents and former Mayor Roxanne Qualls.

Well the 2 Dems who endorsed Pepper can kiss my vote goodbye, and the 2 Repugs would never get my vote. Way to go Wendell & Cecil-nice way to turn your back on a brotha...

Bad form for Pepper to tip his hand, and to leave out 2 endorsed Dems, Lynch & Herd. So much for party unity..

Good for Leslie! We need more progressive pro-choice Republicans like Leslie Ghiz to take the party back from the conservatives.

She will work great with Pepper and shares his values as well as his vision on the role of government in our lives.

Right, let's talk about party unity. or loyalty. How could Pepper endorse 2 republicans over his own party?!!!!! And he endorsed ghiz?!!!! I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in him, but I will let him know on election day.

btw leslie is NOT pro-choice. Where the rumor that she is progressive came from I will never know. Just because you date democrats does not mean you share their values.

Pepper is a Republicrat, so it's no suprise he endorsed both. I think Young and Thomas just cost themselves a lot of votes. I hope none of my other picks make the same mistake.

Pepper lost all of the debates and will diffenitly lose. We already know your Republican paper is going to pick the closet Republibrat, David Pepper. He'll still lose.

All of those that David Pepper endorsed just committed political suicide! Mallory is right again.
It's best to just keep your mouth shut and let the voters decide whom will work with whom, because Pepper's (or Mallory's) endorsement of Council members means nothing. If anything, it will backfire.

People don't vote based on who can work well together. They vote based on those who will work on issues that are important to them. These are not the same.

Big money bags should fire all of his "diverse" staff, b/c he is being ill-advised....ONCE AGAIN!

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on John Eby & Leslie Ghiz. David Pepper is a silver-spoon, country club guy who has virtually no record to run on in 4 years on the Council. Are you better off now than 4 years ago in Cincinnati? NO. These two Republicans ought to be ashamed of themselves. Ghiz, in particular, NEVER supported the Republican for Mayor and is strangely enamored with dorky Democrat council members. Mark Mallory will exhibit real leadership and work to bring us together. Pepper has repeatedly failed on council.

Mark Mallory's comments are really strange - um, I'm too political to build consensus?!?!?

Just because Korte infers that Pepper favors those candidates doesn't mean that he actually does. There is no direct quote from Pepper. I bet he officially endorses the entire Democratic slate.

The only reason Ghiz is considered moderate is becuase she supported the repeal of Article 12. But it is my understanding that she asked to have her name removed from the endorsements page during that campaign. Can anyone confirm this?

"Bad form for Pepper to tip his hand, and to leave out 2 endorsed Dems, Lynch & Herd. So much for party unity.."

Pepper has no concept of party unity. If he did, he would have suspended his campaign during the District 2 special election and let his staff volunteer for Hackett, like Mallory did. So much for having two supposed Democrats in the race when one would just as soon turn his back on the Party. There's only one Democrat in the race for Mayor.

Mr. Mallory is very smart. Why alienate possible new council members or incumbents by choosing who you would want to work with instead of working with whoever is chosen.

Whats not shown is which council candidates have endorsed Mallory for Mayor. The 3 I know of are:

Bortz: $1000 donation to Mallory
Lynch: $200 to Mallory from Lynch for Council
Robert Wilson: "that young chap" said so

This election is a sham!

I don't think you can read into an endorsement because someone contributed money, although that is a fair assumption. Many candidates for city council have contributed to each other and many council candidates have contributed to both mayoral candidates. Either way I do not think it is a good idea for either mayoral candidate to choose who he would like on council, unless they can predict the future. Likewise, I do not think that council candidates should openly endorse who they would like to be mayor and who they would like to serve on council with.

One more thing- I don't think because Pepper endorsed certain candidates I would/wouldn't vote for them. I'm sure not all candidates were asked if it were ok to be included on the list. It is Pepper's prerogative to name who he wants, but that doesn't mean that those he chooses would prefer him over Mallory.

"Pepper has no concept of party unity. If he did, he would have suspended his campaign during the District 2 special election and let his staff volunteer for Hackett, like Mallory did."

Um, in the 2004 election Mallory--as Party Chair--took $12,000 raised for local candidates and transferred it into his Senate account and then his mayoral account. He also took $40,000 from the Ohio Kerry campaign and used it for himself.

Fra from a example of "party unity," Mallory is a self promoster who will put himself above anyone else to advance his career.

Pepper endorsed the following at the Debate at Union Terminal.

Chris Bortz (3CDC)
Jeff Berding (Bengals/Beddinghaus)
Cecil Thomas (FOP)
Wendell Young (FOP)
Leslie Ghiz (???)

Wendell Young's support of Pepper was trumpeted and quoted on Landsman's last message, which also claimed Pepper won the debate -PUHLEASE!

OFC

Consider who you are and what you are...How is taking your opinion seriously?

Mallory won this one just like all the others. Daves double taking and stuttering show people that either he lacks confindence in his believability or he is lying.

Paying enough attention, that he has a plan for disater and Dirty Dave does not.

Councilman Smitherman put a motion on the table immediately after Katrina.

Pepper for all his planning had no plan, why.

Dave's Plans for being Mayor, will probably end up just like the plans he had for City Council...going nowhere.

Besides, I would never trust a man who would go into a collegue's office with his aide and Korte and riffle through the Vice Mayor's trash.

Hey Korte...Why didn't you and Pepper going through Reece's trash make this blog...better yet how did you and Pepper escape the media in general.

Well, don't worry you two got more coverage that you know throw street media.

I quote Mr. David Pepper, "ONLY IN CINCINNATI WOULD THIS NOT BE A HUGE SCANDAL"

Pepper is a lying, coniving, sneaky, two-faced, nit picking crybaby...and none of those qualities make a Mayor!

I love his best quality displayed throughout this campaign. The old thrown the rock and hide your hands trick.

No Promotion for David Pepper.

wow, lot of angry people on this site. i know one thing, the only way city council understands "help" and "caring" is thru taxes. They believe they can "invest" my money into the city better than it's own citizens. i've lived here 8yrs and have never seen a more backward thought process. i remember watching the 'riots' from the Kroger building...what a joke. I just wounder if those rioters remembered to turn off their color tvs, AC units, and locked the doors to their home or apartments...that's a waste of energy you know.
